In-hospital complications and readmission patterns in 13,937 patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip undergoing total hip arthroplasty: Evidence from the Chinese national database.

PURPOSE: Clarifying the prognosis and readmission patterns of patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) following total hip arthroplasty (THA) would provide important references for clinical management for this population. Using the Chinese national inpatient database (i.e., Hospital Quality Monitoring System [HQMS]), we aimed to compare in-hospital complications and readmission patterns following THA in patients with DDH and primary osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Patients undergoing THA for DDH and OA between 2013 and 2019 were identified using the HQMS. Demographics and clinical

Association between Metabolic Obesity Phenotypes and the Burden of Hospitalized Postmenopausal Patients Concomitant with Osteoporosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study Based on the National Readmission Database.

BACKGROUND: The present definition of obesity based on body mass index (BMI) is not accurate and effective enough to identify hospitalized patients with a heavier burden, especially for postmenopausal hospitalized patients concomitant with osteoporosis. The link between common concomitant disorders of major chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MS) remains unclear. Here, we aim to evaluate the impact of different metabolic obesity phenotypes on the burden of postmenopausal hospitalized patients concomitant with osteoporosis in view of unplanned readmissions.

Home monitoring of heart failure patients at risk for hospital readmission using a novel under-the-mattress piezoelectric sensor: A preliminary single centre experience.

Introduction A piezoelectric sensor (PS) converts mechanical deformations into electrical signals. We used a contactless under-the-mattress PS to monitor physiological vibrations resulting from breathing, pumping of the heart, and body movements, among individuals at home following hospitalization for heart failure (HF). Our objectives were to assess acceptability of the device in the home, to assess physiological patterns, and to determine if altered patterns correlate with readmission. Methods We conducted a prospective observational study of 30 patients discharged home following HF hospital

Association of early physician follow-up and 30-day readmission after non-ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction among older patients.

BACKGROUND: Hospital readmission rates within 30 days after acute myocardial infarction are a national performance metric. Previous data suggest that early physician follow-up after heart failure hospitalizations can reduce readmissions; whether these results can be extended to acute myocardial infarction is unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed data from the Can Rapid Risk Stratification of Unstable Angina Patients Suppress Adverse Outcomes With Early Implementation of the ACC/AHA Guidelines (CRUSADE) Registry linked with Medicare claims from 2003 to 2006 for 25 872 non-ST-segment-elevat

Early Post-discharge Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Event Readmission in Patients With Heart Failure and Type 2 Diabetes: A Single-center Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background    Heart failure (HF) patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are at high risk of hospital readmission due to cardiovascular events. Glycemic control may play a key role in reducing this risk, but the optimal glycemic control threshold for preventing readmissions remains unclear.Material and methods     This single-center, retrospective cohort study included 160 adult patients with HF and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Patients were classified into two groups based on HbA1c measured 3 months after discharge: poor glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7.0 %) and good glycemic control (Hb

Cholesterol-to-Lymphocyte Ratio as a Predictor of 1-Year Unplanned Readmission in Patients with Coronary Artery Disease and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) face a markedly increased risk of unplanned readmission due to metabolic disturbances and chronic inflammation. The cholesterol-to-lymphocyte ratio (CLR), reflecting both dyslipidemia and inflammatory status, may serve as a useful marker for risk stratification. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of CLR for 1-year unplanned readmission in CAD patients with T2DM. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of patients hospitalized from January to December 2023 who wer

Thyroid feedback quantile-based index predicts 90-day all-cause mortality or readmission in hospitalized heart failure patients: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The Thyroid Feedback Quantile-Based Index (TFQI), a recently developed indicator derived from thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels, has demonstrated prognostic value in metabolic diseases. Nevertheless, its utility in predicting clinical endpoints among heart failure (HF) patients remains unclear. This study aimed to identify the optimal TFQI cutoff for risk stratification and to evaluate its association with adverse outcomes in HF patients. METHODS: A total of 402 HF patients were enrolled in the study. Using the composite outcome of 90-day all-cause m

ICU Readmission and In-Hospital Mortality Rates for Patients Discharged from the ICU-Risk Factors and Validation of a New Predictive Model: The Worse Outcome Score (WOScore).

Background: Intensive Care Unit (ICU) readmission and in-hospital mortality are critical indicators of patient outcomes following ICU discharge. Patients readmitted to the ICU often face worse prognosis, higher healthcare costs, and prolonged hospital stays. Identifying high-risk patients is essential for optimizing post-ICU care and resource allocation. Methods: This two-phase study included the following: (1) a retrospective analysis of ICU survivors in a mixed medical-surgical ICU to identify risk factors associated with ICU readmission and in-hospital mortality, and (2) a prospective valid

Predictors of All-Cause 30-Day Readmissions in Patients with Heart Failure at an Urban Safety Net Hospital: The Importance of Social Determinants of Health and Mental Health.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is a frequent cause of readmissions. Despite caring for underresourced patients and dependence on government funding, safety net hospitals frequently incur penalties for failing to meet pay-for-performance readmission metrics. Limited research exists on the causes of HF readmissions in safety net hospitals. Therefore, we sought to investigate predictors of 30-day all-cause readmission in HF patients in the safety net setting. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of patients admitted for HF from October 2018 to April 2019. We extracted data on dem

Risk Factors with 30-Day Readmission and the Impact of Length of Hospital Stay on It in Patients with Heart Failure: A Retrospective Observational Study Using a Japanese National Database.

Heart failure is a major disease, and its 30-day readmission (readmission within 30-day after discharge) negatively impacts patients and society. Thus, we need to stratify the risk and prevent readmission. We aimed to investigate risk factors associated with 30-day readmission and examine the impact of length of hospital stay (LOS) on 30-day readmission. Using the Diagnosis-Procedure-Combination database from April 2018 to March 2021, we conducted multiple logistic regression to investigate risk factors with 30-day readmission. Also, we conducted subgroup analysis in the short LOS group. To ex

Splenic Volume Index Determined Using Computed Tomography upon Admission Is Associated with Readmission for Heart Failure Among Patients with Acute Decompensated Heart Failure.

The spleen is associated with inflammation, and the size of the spleen is affected by hemodynamic congestion and sympathetic stimulation. However, the association between splenic size and prognosis in patients with heart failure remains unknown. Between January 2015 and March 2017, we analyzed 125 patients with acute decompensated heart failure who were assessed by computed tomography (CT) on the day of admission. The spleen was measured by 3-dimensional CT and then the patients were assigned to groups according to their median splenic volume indexes (SpVi; splenic volume/body surface area). W
