Color Tuning of Face-Selective Neurons in Macaque Inferior Temporal Cortex.

What role does color play in the neural representation of complex shapes? We approached the question by measuring color responses of face-selective neurons, using fMRI-guided microelectrode recording of the middle and anterior face patches of inferior temporal cortex (IT) in rhesus macaques. Face-selective cells responded weakly to pure color (equiluminant) photographs of faces. But many of the cells nonetheless showed a bias for warm colors when assessed using images that preserved the luminance contrast relationships of the original photographs. This bias was also found for non-face-selectiv

Holistic processing of Chinese characters in college students with dyslexia.

Expert face recognition has long been marked by holistic processing. Hence, due to the many visual properties shared between face perception and Chinese characters, it has been suggested that Chinese character recognition may induce stronger holistic processing in expert readers than in novices. However, there have been different viewpoints presented about Chinese character recognition, one of which suggests that expertise in this skill involved reduced holistic processing which may be modulated by writing experiences/performances. In this study we examined holistic processing in Chinese chara

The role of semantic activation during word recognition in Arabic.

In the current study, the role of semantic activation in the process of word recognition was investigated among native Arab readers. Twenty-nine typical readers in third grade were tested in reading three lists of pseudowords. Each list consisted of thirty pseudowords (lists A, B and C). Each word in list A was matched with a real meaning, and each participant was trained during eight training sessions to learn the meanings of the pseudowords (the semantic list). For list B, the participants were exposed only to the phonological pronunciation of each word during eight phonological training ses

A common mechanism modulates saccade timing during pursuit and fixation.

Smooth pursuit is punctuated by catch-up saccades, which are thought to automatically correct sensory errors in retinal position and velocity. Recent studies have shown that the timing of catch-up saccades is susceptible to cognitive modulation, as is the timing of fixational microsaccades. Are the timing of catchup and microsaccades thus modulated by the same mechanism? Here, we test directly whether pursuit catch-up saccades and fixational microsaccades exhibit the same temporal pattern of task-related bursts and subsidence. Observers pursued a linear array of 15 alphanumeric characters that

Cognitive-Linguistic Skills Underlying Word Reading and Spelling Difficulties in Chinese Adolescents With Dyslexia.

The present study investigated the co-occurrence of word reading and spelling difficulties for Chinese first language (L1) and English second language (L2) and the role of morphological awareness in word reading and spelling ability across two languages. A total of 110 Hong Kong Chinese-speaking students in Grade 7, including 55 adolescents with dyslexia (28 males, mean age = 152.11 months) and 55 typically developing adolescents (27 males, mean age = 151.85 months) participated. They were assessed on the cognitive-linguistic measures of morphological awareness, phonological awareness, vocabul

A patient with aphasia using the nonsemantic lexical route for Kanji reading.

We report a patient with aphasia, caused by cerebral hemorrhage, who probably used the nonsemantic lexical route when reading words aloud. To investigate the mechanisms underlying her reading dysfunction, we analyzed her reading abilities using the Dual-Route Cascaded Model. Language tests resulted in low correct percentages for both reading comprehension and reading nonwords aloud, suggesting problems in the semantic system and the nonlexical route. Conversely, the patient showed high scores on the reading words aloud task. Although she failed to understand many inconsistent-atypical words in

A formal analysis of alexia in persistent aura and a comparison to acquired pure alexia.

A patient is reported with reversible pure alexia in the context of migraine with aura. Following previous, anecdotal reports, the present study is the first to formally assess word reading, writing, and other linguistic and visual processing and to compare these to a patient with stroke-related pure alexia. The reading impairment, suggestive of letter-by-letter reading, was observed across 7 days but had remitted at a 3-month follow-up. The deficit also affected recognition of letters, suggesting a functional impairment at the level of letter recognition, not just word reading. It went along

Perceptual similarity of visual patterns predicts dynamic neural activation patterns measured with MEG.

Perceptual similarity is a cognitive judgment that represents the end-stage of a complex cascade of hierarchical processing throughout visual cortex. Previous studies have shown a correspondence between the similarity of coarse-scale fMRI activation patterns and the perceived similarity of visual stimuli, suggesting that visual objects that appear similar also share similar underlying patterns of neural activation. Here we explore the temporal relationship between the human brain's time-varying representation of visual patterns and behavioral judgments of perceptual similarity. The visual stim

Functional MRI of visual responses in the awake, behaving marmoset.

The visual brain is composed of interconnected subcortical and cortical structures that receive and process image information originating in the retina. The visual system of nonhuman primates, in particular macaques, has been studied in great detail in order to elucidate principles of human sensation and perception. The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a small New World monkey of growing interest as a primate model for neuroscience. Marmosets have advantages over macaques because of their small size, lissencephalic cortex, and growing potential for viral and genetic manipulations. Previ

Articulatory imaging implicates prediction during spoken language comprehension.

It has been suggested that the activation of speech-motor areas during speech comprehension may, in part, reflect the involvement of the speech production system in synthesizing upcoming material at an articulatorily specified level. In this study, we explored that suggestion through the use of articulatory imaging. We investigated whether, and how, predictions that emerge during speech comprehension influence articulatory realizations during picture naming. We elicited predictions by auditorily presenting high-cloze sentence stems to participants (e.g., When we want water we just turn on the

Boundary segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax.

Active observer movement results in retinal image motion that is highly dependent on the scene layout. This retinal motion, often called motion parallax, can yield significant information about the boundaries between objects and their relative depth differences. Previously we examined segmentation from shear-based motion parallax, which consists of only relative motion information. Here, we examine segmentation from dynamic occlusion-based motion parallax, which contains both relative motion and accretion-deletion. We utilized random dots whose motion was modulated with vertical low spatial fr

The resolution of facial expressions of emotion.

Much is known on how facial expressions of emotion are produced, including which individual muscles are most active in each expression. Yet, little is known on how this information is interpreted by the human visual system. This paper presents a systematic study of the image dimensionality of facial expressions of emotion. In particular, we investigate how recognition degrades when the resolution of the image (i.e., number of pixels when seen as a 5.3 by 8 degree stimulus) is reduced. We show that recognition is only impaired in practice when the image resolution goes below 20 × 30 pixels. A s

Visual rapid naming and phonological abilities: different subtypes in dyslexic children.

One implication of the double-deficit hypothesis for dyslexia is that there should be subtypes of dyslexic readers that exhibit rapid naming deficits with or without concomitant phonological processing problems. In the current study, we investigated the validity of this hypothesis for Portuguese orthography, which is more consistent than English orthography, by exploring different cognitive profiles in a sample of dyslexic children. In particular, we were interested in identifying readers characterized by a pure rapid automatized naming deficit. We also examined whether rapid naming and phonol

Motion-induced position shifts in global dynamic Gabor arrays.

Objects in motion appear shifted in space. For global motion stimuli we can ask whether the shift depends on the local or global motion. We constructed arrays of randomly oriented Gaussian enveloped drifting sine gratings (dynamic Gabors) whose speed was set such that the normal component of motion was consistent with a single global velocity. The array appears shifted in space in the direction of the global motion. The size of the shift is the same as for arrays of uniformly oriented dynamic Gabors that are moving in the same direction at the same global speed. Arrays made up of vertically or

Is the visual analyzer orthographic-specific? Reading words and numbers in letter position dyslexia.

Letter position dyslexia (LPD) is a deficit in the encoding of letter position within words. It is characterized by errors of letter migration within words, such as reading trail as trial and form as from. In order to examine whether LPD is domain-specific, and to assess the domain-specificity of the visual analysis system, this study explored whether LPD extends to number reading, by testing whether individuals who have letter migrations in word reading also show migrations while reading numbers. The reading of words and numbers of 12 Hebrew-speaking individuals with developmental LPD was ass

Multiple sources of information and time-to-contact judgments.

Four experiments examined how the visual system deals with multiple information sources for perceiving dynamic events. Two tau-type optical variables, one defined by the expanding object's image and the other defined by the expanding angular extent composed of the line of sight and the object's shadow, were manipulated in time-to-contact judgments. When the information specified by both variables was consistent, little perceptual accuracy was gained by having two information sources. When the two sources conflicted, perceptual accuracy deteriorated in proportion to the degree of conflict. Base

Pure agnosia for mirror stimuli after right inferior parietal lesion.

This study reports the experimental investigation of G.R., a patient suffering from a highly specific disorder in discriminating mirror stimuli following a right temporoparietal cerebrovascular accident. G.R. showed intact perceptual, attentional, mnestic, linguistic and executive abilities. Object recognition was accurate even under unusual viewing conditions. He was highly accurate in defining the canonical orientation of common objects and in discriminating misoriented objects among identical distracters. However, he was severely impaired in tasks requiring mirror-stimulus discrimination, a

Pictogram naming in dyslexic and normal children assessed by SLO.

We measured pictogram naming (PN) and text reading in dyslexic and normally reading young teenagers. Eye movements were monitored by scanning laser ophthalmoscope, revealing positions of fovea, stimuli on the retina, and speech simultaneously. While text reading speed showed the expected difference between groups, PN speeds overlapped widely. PN was mainly controlled by retrieval time in both groups and correlated with age in dyslexics. During PN, only backward saccades occurred more frequently in dyslexics. We conclude that PN activates visual/eidetic mechanisms that are distinct from the pho
