A variant case of Poland syndrome is reported, with the patient presenting major unilateral anomalies in the sternocostal head of the left pectoralis major muscle and a shorter left arm and hand. No pre-natal history of attempted abortion or using toxic or teratogenic drugs could be elicited. The variability of the upper extremity anomalies and the frequency of major ipsilateral defects of the skeletal and genite-urinary systems, the associated diseases, and the diagnosis and management of these patients are briefly discussed.

We describe prenatal diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome using a combination of ultrasound and MRI. Poland syndrome was diagnosed based on absence of the pectoralis muscles associated with dextroposition of the fetal heart and elevation of the left diaphragm. Associated brain anomalies that led to the diagnosis of Poland-Möbius syndrome, included ventriculomegaly, hypoplastic cerebellum, tectal beaking, and a peculiar flattening of the posterior aspect of the pons and medulla oblongata, which has been reported by postnatal diffusion tensor imaging studies as a reliable neuroimaging marker for …

Poland's syndrome is a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by hypoplasia of the pectoralis muscles and ipsilateral webbing of the fingers. The name of this condition pays homage to Dr. Alfred Poland of Guy's Hospital, who in 1841 described a case of these two deformities during the autopsy of a 27-year-old convict. An exploration of the historical series reveals a clear progression of knowledge about this syndrome, accumulated by scientists across Europe and America. As such, the name "Poland's syndrome" stands as a point of contention to those who oppose the injudicious use of epon…

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in shoulder musculature are poorly quantified, and currently no dataset describes the architecture of middle-aged parascapular muscles, limiting musculoskeletal modeling and clinical interpretation.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: To compare the architectural properties of rotator cuff and deltoid muscles between middle-aged and elderly individuals; and to establish normative architectural data for parascapular muscles in middle-aged specimens.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two cadaveric shoulders were examined, including middle-aged (n = 12) and elderly (n = 14-20, a par

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital malformation. Hypoplasia of the sternocostal portion of the pectoralis major muscle is the most significant feature and is most frequently associated with homolateral breast hypoplasia. In this article, the authors present a case of bilateral phyllodes tumors in a 28-year-old woman with Poland syndrome and discuss (1) the relationship between the condition and breast cancer, (2) the modes of surveillance in patients with Poland syndrome, and (3) its impact on breast reconstruction.

We report the case of a patient with a sero-papillary ovarian cancer and a pectoral muscle metastasis. Muscular metastases are more common than previously suspected; any physician could encounter this type of case in his daily practice. This paper summarizes the literature on the subject.

Descriptions of muscle perforator flaps incorporating the same skin territory of almost all known musculocutaneous flaps reflect their versatility. The pectoralis major musculocutaneous flap is a proven "workhorse" flap, especially for head and neck reconstruction. Yet, the corresponding thoracoacromial artery muscle perforator flap has been relatively overlooked, with few clinical experiences reported, presumably because of the highly variable and diminutive perforators emanating from this source vessel. However, in certain circumstances, this can be another alternative as a local muscle perf

Background and Purpose: Understanding the role and significance of trunk and upper extremity muscles in paraplegic gait can help in designing more effective assistive devices for these patients and also provides valuable information for improving muscle strengthening programs. Methods: In a patient with a spinal cord injury (SCI) who could walk independently (rating scale of ambulatory capacity, 9) with the aid of bilateral ankle-foot orthosis and a walker, the kinematics, kinetics and electromyographic (EMG) activities of 16 muscles from the trunk and upper and lower extremities were recorded

We implanted a cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) together with a pacemaker system in three patients with ventricular tachycardia and bradyarrhythmias. Both systems (ICD and pacemaker) were implanted in the same left pectoral quadrant using a single skin incision and the subclavian and/or the cephalic vein. The ICD was implanted deep to the pectoralis major muscle, the pacemaker was placed subcutaneously in a more medial pocket. There were no technical difficulties during implantation or complications during follow-up.

Poland syndrome is a combination of chest wall deformity and absent or hypoplastic pectoralis muscle and breast associated with shortening and brachysyndactyly of the upper limb. Clinical presentation varies widely; therefore, reconstructive procedures have to be adapted to the deformity, ranging from chest wall stabilization or augmentation, dynamic muscle transfer, nipple and areola repositioning, and breast augmentation using prosthesis or autologous tissue transfer. Other congenital breast anomalies include supernumerary nipple and areola (polythelia) and breast (polymastia), which can gen

Facial penetrating gunshot wounds (GSWs) are seen in an assault, suicide, and accidental injury. They often carry high mortality given the important anatomical structures located within the neck. The foundations of maxillofacial GSWs are rooted in data from military combat, specifically the last world war. This type of injury is complex for reconstructive surgery due to significant soft tissue and bone loss. Management of maxillofacial GSWs is often challenging and has trended from serial debridement, immediate reconstruction, local tissue flaps, and distant free flap transfers depending on bu

Effects of in ovo and dietary sources of calcidiol (25(OH)D3), combined with Marek's disease vaccine (MDV), on the expression of genes involved with the antioxidant activity, muscle deposition, and immunity in the pectoralis major (P. major) muscle and spleen of 40 d of age (doa) broilers were investigated. The in ovo treatments were as follows: (1) non-injected; (2) the injection of 50 μL of commercial MDV, (3) MDV + 1.2, or (4) 2.4 μg of 25(OH)D3. All birds received either a commercial diet containing no supplemental 25(OH)D3 (control) or the same diet supplemented with an additional 69 µg o

INTRODUCTION: Muscle ultrasound is a fast, non-invasive and cost-effective examination that can identify structural muscular changes by assessing muscle thickness and echointensity (EI) with a quantitative analysis (QMUS). To assess applicability and repeatability of QMUS, we evaluated patients with genetically confirmed facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy type 1 (FSHD1), comparing their muscle ultrasound characteristics with healthy controls and with those detected by MRI. We also evaluated relationships between QMUS and demographic and clinical characteristics.

Musculoskeletal risk is mediated by body posture, especially for static tasks. Workstations that require non-neutral postures can lead to increased load, muscular fatigue and injury risk. However, demands during simple axial rotation tasks are not well-defined. The purpose of this study is to quantify the muscular activity of during static axial rotation in a range of postures. Eighteen participants performed 76 axial rotation exertions in varying combinations of humeral elevation angles (30°-60°-90°-120°-150°), plane of elevation (30°-60°-90°-120°) and exertion intensity (20-40%). Six unilate

This study compared nine resistance eccentric exercises targeting arm, leg, and trunk muscles in one session for changes in maximal voluntary isometric contraction strength (MVC), delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity, and myoglobin (Mb) concentration after the first and second bouts. Fifteen sedentary men (20-25 years) performed 5 sets of 10 eccentric contractions with 80% of MVC load for the elbow flexors (EF), elbow extensors (EE), pectoralis, knee extensors (KE), knee flexors (KF), plantar flexors (PF), latissimus, abdominis, and erector spinae (ES) in
