Adolescence represents a uniquely sensitive developmental stage in the transition from childhood to adulthood. During this transition, neuronal circuits are particularly susceptible to modification by experience. In addition, adolescence is a stage in which the incidence of anxiety disorders peaks in humans and over 75% of adults with fear-related disorders met diagnostic criteria as children and adolescents. While postnatal critical periods of plasticity for primary sensory processes, such as in the visual system are well established, less is known about potential critical or sensitive period

Hepatoblastoma (HBL) is a rare primary malignant liver tumor affecting mainly pediatric patients in the age group 6 months to 3 years. Presentation of HBL in the neonatal period is rare. HBL can be diagnosed on cytology along with subtyping. Estimation of serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is essential as a tumor marker. Fetal type HBL usually shows high AFP level. In this report, diagnosis of HBL in a 10-day-old baby with low serum AFP is being described for its unusual presentation.

INTRODUCTION: Recent molecular studies of the original cases of normokalemic periodic paralysis (normoKPP) have raised suspicions that these families actually had hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (hyperKPP) due to mutations in the skeletal muscle sodium channel gene SCN4A. However, there is still a debate about the existence of normoKPP.
METHODS: We screened 230 individuals with primary periodic paralysis for mutations in the SCN4A, CACNA1S, and KCNJ2 genes. All patients had either a hyperKPP or a hypoKPP phenotype, and none had a normoKPP phenotype.
RESULTS: In 4 hyperKPP patients from 2 fam

Preference behaviors are often established during early life, but the underlying neural circuit mechanisms remain unknown. Adapting a unique nesting behavior assay, we confirmed a "critical period" for developing music preference in C57BL/6 mice. Early music exposure between postnatal days 15 and 24 reversed their innate bias for silent shelter, which typically could not be altered in adulthood. Instead, exposing adult mice treated acutely with valproic acid or carrying a targeted deletion of the Nogo receptor (NgR(-/-)) unmasked a strong plasticity of preference consistent with a reopening of

Periodic catatonia (PC) is a rare type of catatonia syndrome, in which the catatonic phases often repeat regularly. Between the catatonic periods, the symptoms totally disappear and make the diagnosis difficult. We report a case with PC who did not show any catatonic symptoms except anxiety and restlessness in his first referral to the hospital. Although it was reported that he showed the symptoms of the disorder such as mutism, and immobility, he was not hospitalized. In his next referral (24 hours later), he was referred with catatonic symptoms and was hospitalized. The periods of catatonia

Thyrotoxic Periodic Paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication of thyrotoxicosis and is up to 20 times more common in males. Cases usually present with painless muscle weakness precipitated by heavy exercise, fasting, an alcohol binge or large carbohydrate meal. Serum potassium is low in the majority, but normokalaemic (or even hyperkalaemic) TPP is recognised. Acute treatment of any electrolyte disorder, administration of a beta-blocker and treatment of the thyrotoxicosis leads to complete resolution. This rare diagnosis should be considered by the Acute Physician when confronted with any case of

We report a 30-yr-old lady who was being treated as postpartum psychosis. Patient had generalized tonic clonic convulsions and was found to have bilateral cataract. Her serum calcium, serum magnesium and serum parathyroid were low. On correction of serum magnesium her PTH did not increase. She was hence diagnosed as primary hypoparathyroidism. On correction of her serum calcium her psychosis improved.

PURPOSE: The classification of anorectal malformations (ARM) as high or low is based on clinical and anatomical characteristics. It has an impact on the surgical management but also on the functional prognosis. In the absence of consensus, our goal was to determine the value of imaging in the neonatal period for diagnosis and management of infants with ARM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of 43 infants imaged over a 9 year period. The different imaging studies (abdominal and pelvic ultrasound, radiographs, percutaneous opacifications and fistulograms) performed for each infant were

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney failure (AKF) is a common clinical problem in neonatal intensive care units and is usually associated with a contributing condition such as sepsis, asphyxia, and heart failure. The aim of this study was to determine the types, frequency of associated contributing conditions, and short-term outcome of neonatal AKF.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records of neonates with a diagnosis of AKF from March 2003 to September 2006 were studied in a tertiary care children's hospital in Tabriz, Iran.
RESULTS: Of 6042 hospitalized neonates, 151 with documented AKF (100 boys and

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HPP) is a rare disorder characterised by acute, potentially fatal atacks of muscle weakness or paralysis. Massive shift of potassium into cells is caused by elevated levels of insulin and catecholamines in the blood. Hypophosphatemia and hypomagnesemia may be also present. Acidobasic status usually is not impaired. HPP occurs as familiar (caused by ion channels inherited defects) or acquired (in patients with hyperthyroidism). On the basis of two clinical cases we present a review of hypokalemic periodic paralysis in hyperthyroid patients. We discuss patogenesis

Venous thromboembolism, including deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, is a common illness during postoperative period. Pharmacological antithrombotic therapy is the cornerstone for the treatment of venous thromboembolism. However, management of venous thromboembolism during postoperative period can be challenging, because of increased risk of bleeding associated with antithrombotic agents. Therefore, we should devise a strategy with mechanical support such as catheter intervention, inferior vena cava filter and percutaneous cardiopulmonary support during the period with increas

Thyrotoxic hypokalemic periodic paralysis (TPP)--a rare complication of thyrotoxicosis and a medical emergency--is characterized by recurrent episodes of muscle weakness and hypokalemia associated with hyperthyroidism. We report a case of TPP in a 38-year-old white Lebanese male. The patient suffered from severe muscle weakness of the upper and lower limbs. His blood tests revealed hypokalemia (k: 2.4 mEq/L), low thyroid-stimulating hormone TSH (0.001 microIU/mL) and normal levels of thyroid hormones. The thyroid scan showed a hot nodule. His paralysis resolved with IV potassium. The patient w

A 20-year-old male was brought to the hospital with the complaints of severe weakness and inability to move the limbs of 12 hours duration. For the last 2 years he had the same episodes with spontaneous recovery. Family history strongly suggested involvement of other members of the family. Physical examination did not suggest any neurological deficit. All investigations were normal except serum potassium level being 2.2 meq/l during attack and 3.4 meq/l after the attack. He was treated with oral acetazolamide and potassium chloride. The case was diagnosed to be familial periodic paralysis belo

Various studies in the field of sexual and reproductive health have focused on understanding the relationship between the gestation period and sexual behavior. The majority of such research suggests that during pregnancy, both sexual desire and frequency of sexual relations decrease. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether there are any influences of gestational period on the sexual behavior, and to identify differences in sexual behavior among women before and during pregnancy. A cross-sectional analytic study design was carried out on a sample of 190 women attending the
