Mite infestations.

Mite infestations are important in dermatology because these may cause dermatologic diseases that range from papulosquamous eruptions to urticarial lesions to bullous eruptions and may spread infectious diseases. These clinical manifestations are important to recognize because mite-associated diseases may have systemic complications and may be confused with other dermatologic conditions. In treating mite infestations, oral antibiotics may be necessary. Prevention of infestation may be accomplished by pre-treating clothing with permethrin, using insect repellent N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide on cl…

Linking nuclear receptor antagonism with neuronal morphology improves detection of developmental neurotoxicants.

Out of the tested chemicals, endosulfan and cy-permethrin decreased neurite outgrowth and branching when tested alone. Mass Drug Administration for the Control of Scabies: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease of the skin that can lead to impetigo, serious secondary bacterial infections and immune … f MDA on scabies prevalence was 79%. The effect size was comparable for MDA based on ivermectin and permethrin. MDA for scabies also led to a reduction in impetigo prevalence with a relative reduction of 66%. CONCLUSIONS: MDA for scabies is highly effective in reducing the prevalence of scabies and impetigo. Further research is needed to determine the durab …

Head Lice.

BACKGROUND: Conflicting information about the proper treatment of head lice has given rise to uncertainty among patients and treating personnel. For example, the reported efficacy of permethrin fell from 97% in the 1990s to 30% in 2010. METHODS: Review of the literature based on a selective search of PubMed. RESULTS: In Germany, outbreaks of head lice mainly occur among 5- to 13-year-olds returning to school after the summer vacation. Nymphs hatch from eggs after an average of 8 days and become sexually mature lice over the ensuing 9 days. The main route of transmission is direct head-to-hea…

Resistant itchy lesions in a young man.

Case study A man, 18 years of age, presented with a 6-month history of a widespread itchy rash, more intense at night, which had appeared 1 month after returning from a holiday to the Dominican Republic. The rash initially appeared as white patches affecting the fingers. The patient reported unprotected heterosexual intercourse while on holiday. There was no previous or family history of atopic dermatitis, however, the patient's sister had recently begun to experience similar symptoms. Clinical examination revealed scattered excoriated papules over the trunk (Figure 1), limbs and hands (Figure

[The reaction of taiga ticks to an attractant. 1. The experimental contact of nymphs with attractant-acaricidal granules].

Four experimental variants used the following: 1) granules only from a filler (control); 2) those from a filler and an attractant; 3) and 4) those from a filler, an attractant, and a toxicant (permethrin or lambda cigalothrin, respectively). Each experiment used 20 nymphs of the first laboratory generation. 90 and 25% were in contact with attractive and control granules, respectively. Out of the nymphs in experiments 3 and 4 granules, 94 and 100% died. The contacts of 4 sec or more duration led to death. The experimental findings suggest that the designing and application of attractive acarici…

Attack of the scabies: what to do when an outbreak occurs.

Scabies remains a significant source of morbidity in nursing home residents because of its highly contagious nature. It is characterized by severe pruritus and papules, pustules, burrows, nodules, and occasionally urticarial lesions. Lesions are commonly found on the wrists, finger webs, antecubital fossae, axillae, areolae, periumbilical region, lower abdomen, genitals, and buttocks. Diagnosis is based on the history, physical examination, and demonstration of mites, eggs, or scybala on microscopic examination. Several topical scabicides are available, but permethrin cream appears to be less …

Human pediculosis: a critical health problem and what about nursing policy?

Lice infestation on the human body (also known as pediculosis) is very common. Cases number in the hundreds of millions worldwide. Three dis … n, and lindane, but reports of resistance to one or more of them have recently appeared. Pyrethroid permethrin when applied as a dust or spray to clothing or bedding is highly effective against lice and is the delousing agent of choice. Fabric treated with permethrin retains toxicity to lice even after 20 washings, thereby offering significant long-term pass …

Bound by tradition: severe pediculosis capitis in a breastfeeding mother with religious headwear.

A 25-year-old breastfeeding woman from rural India presented with a 2-month history of intense scalp pruritus, formication and fever. Examination revealed a severe Pediculus humanus capitis infestation involving her scalp, face and religious headscarf, with extensive live lice, nits, pustules, excoriations, crusted papules and dermatopathic lymphadenopathy. Treatment with permethrin 1% lotion and weekly oral ivermectin for 4 weeks, in conjunction with broad-spectrum antibiotics and supportive care, resulted in near-complete eradication. This case represents one of the most severe presentations…

Studies on the control of plague in the western United States: laboratory trials of six insecticide dust formulations applied to soil for the control of the plague vector Oropsylla montana (Siphonaptera: Ceratophyllidae).

In this study, six insecticide dust formulations were laboratory-tested in soil mixtures ranging in concentration from 40 to 1,280 parts per million (ppm) against a proven vector of bubonic plague, Oropsylla montana (Baker). Pulicidal effects of the six insecticides, which included three organophosphates, two carbamates, and a pyrethroid, were compared by LD(50) values at both ambient and 75% RH. Permethrin (Pyraperm 455 dust), a pyrethroid with a LD(50) less than 40 ppm, demonstrated the most effective pulicidal action for the 13-wk trial period, followed in order by chlorpyrifos, bendiocarb,…

[Scabies].

Scabies is an infectious disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. The disease is mainly transmitted by close personal contact. The primary clinical picture is characterized by burrows at typical areas as well as severe pruritus, while secondarily a rather non-specific exanthema can be observed. The detection of mites or mite products (eggs, feces) confirms the diagnosis; dermatoscopy may facilitate the diagnosis. First choice therapy for most variants of scabies is topical permethrin. Oral administration of ivermectin is recommended for some special indications. In the following artic…
