Risk Assessment of Recreational Noise-Induced Hearing Loss from Exposure through a Personal Audio System-iPod Touch.

BACKGROUND: Recreational noise-induced hearing loss (RNIHL) is a major health issue and presents a huge economic burden on society. Exposure to loud music is not considered hazardous in our society because music is thought to be a source of relaxation and entertainment. However, there is evidence that regardless of the sound source, frequent exposure to loud music, including through personal audio systems (PAS), can lead to hearing loss, tinnitus, difficulty processing speech, and increased susceptibility to age-related hearing loss. PURPOSE: Several studies have documented temporary threshol

Aggregate consumer exposure to isothiazolinones via household care and personal care products: Probabilistic modelling and benzisothiazolinone risk assessment.

Consumers regularly use household care and personal care products (HC&PCPs). Isothiazolinones are included in HC&PCPs as preservatives and are being held responsible for an epidemic rise in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The objective of this study was to assess the origin and extent of dermal exposure in order to evaluate the risk of ACD from isothiazolinones in HC&PCP. Individual-based aggregate dermal exposure to four isothiazolinones was estimated using the newly proposed Probabilistic Aggregated Consumer Exposure Model-Kinetic, Dermal (PACEM-KD) by combining the reported individual us

Quantifying human exposure to air pollution--moving from static monitoring to spatio-temporally resolved personal exposure assessment.

Quantifying human exposure to air pollutants is a challenging task. Ambient concentrations of air pollutants at potentially harmful levels are ubiquitous in urban areas and subject to high spatial and temporal variability. At the same time, every individual has unique activity-patterns. Exposure results from multifaceted relationships and interactions between environmental and human systems, adding complexity to the assessment process. Traditionally, approaches to quantify human exposure have relied on pollutant concentrations from fixed air quality network sites and static population distribu

The validity of the Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) in a multicultural cohort of community-dwelling older persons with early dementia.

The 6-item Rowland Universal Dementia Assessment Scale (RUDAS) is a simple, portable multicultural scale for detecting dementia. Items address executive function, praxis, gnosis, recent memory, and category fluency. It can be directly translated to other languages, without the need to change the structure or the format of any item. The RUDAS was administered to 151 consecutive, consenting, culturally diverse community-dwelling subjects of mean age 77 years, 72% of whom had an informant. Subjects were recruited from various clinics and healthcare programs. All were evaluated for cognitive impai

Pathologic abnormalities of deep placentation in the great obstetrical syndromes: Implications for understanding the pathophysiology, risk assessment in early pregnancy, and personalized prevention.

The concept of the Great Obstetrical Syndromes was introduced to explain the unique nature of obstetrical disease, which differs fundamentally from disorders in other areas of medicine. These syndromes, including preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, fetal death, and spontaneous preterm birth, represent clinical endpoints rather than single diseases and share defining characteristics: they arise from multiple etiologies, have a prolonged subclinical phase, involve the fetus as an active participant, are adaptive in nature, and result from complex genetic and environmental interactions betwee

[CogniScan, a new tool for assessing subjective cognitive decline: Preliminary exploration of links with interoception, personality type and anxiety-depression affects].

As the population ages, the prevalence of neurocognitive disorders is increasing. Among the earliest manifestations of these disorders, subjective cognitive decline (SCD) warrants particular attention, as it may represent an early indicator of future neurocognitive impairment. To address this issue, the CogniScan questionnaire was developed. This study aimed to examine its psychometric properties and to investigate factors associated with SCD, including anxiety and depressive symptoms, personality traits, and interoception. CogniScan, a questionnaire assessing five cognitive domains (memory, a

Mental health burden of persons living in Ukraine and Ukrainians displaced to Switzerland: the mental health assessment of the Ukrainian population (MAP) studies.

INTRODUCTION: The war in Ukraine places a great burden on its population as well as the people who have been displaced from it. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of symptoms of depression, anxiety and Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland and contextualise them with a non-war affected population. METHODS: Participants were recruited into prospective cohorts using random population sampling from 25 March to 9 August 2024. Raw prevalence estimates were adjusted using Bayesian modelling to account for instrument inaccuracy. Estimat

A laboratory task to assess epistemic mistrust: behavioral evidence for mediation between childhood trauma and borderline personality features in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in epistemic trust have been recognised as key sequelae of trauma and as markers of vulnerability to borderline personality pathology. However, prior research has relied primarily on self-reports and lacks behavioural measures of epistemic stance. The present pre-registered studies introduce a novel behavioural task-the Balloon Analogue Risk Task for Epistemic Trust (BART-ET)-and examine its associations with borderline personality features, trauma history, and psychological distress. METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted with a combined sample of 273 you

Assessing low-back loading during lifting using personalized electromyography-driven trunk models and NIOSH-based risk levels.

Workplace injury risk due to physically demanding tasks (e.g., repeated lifting) is currently assessed using ergonomic guidelines. The Revised NIOSH Lifting Equation (RNLE) is a commonly used approach that assesses risk of low-back loading during different lifting tasks. Advances in musculoskeletal models have enabled the estimation of physiologically valid person-specific musculoskeletal models (pEMS) driven by surface electromyography and joint angle information. These models offer realistic estimates of objective parameters such as moments and compressive and shear loads at the lumbosacral
