Case Studies on Dissocial Personality-Bad or Ill?

Dissocial personality is understood as a personality that does not ideologize most social norms and is characterized by a lack of empathy. Precise criteria for diagnosing dissocial personality are included in the ICD-10 classification, which is still in force in Poland. This classification is widely available in both Polish and English. In Poland, there is a fairly wide range of assistance available for people with personality disorders in day care units and 24-h wards for the treatment of personality disorders. Unfortunately, due to some antisocial behaviors that violate the criminal law in f

The dynamic relationship of parental personality traits with the personality and psychopathology traits of anorectic and bulimic daughters.

OBJECTIVE: Parenting and family dynamics influence the emergence, development, and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). Although family interventions are relevant for therapeutic programs, knowledge of the relationship between parental personality traits and the eating psychopathology of daughters is scarce. This study explored the personality and psychopathology of women with EDs and correlated them with parental personality traits. METHOD: The personality and eating psychopathology traits of 38 restricter anorectics, 30 bingeing/purging anorectics, 37 bulimics, and their parents' personal

Paranoid-schizoid or symbiotic?

This critique of Mahler's derivation of a developmental stage of normal symbiosis from her work with psychotic children reveals some clear parallels with Klein's description of the paranoid-schizoid position. The defence mechanisms of splitting, and of projective and introjective identification are already operative in the symbiotic stage and imply some distinction between self and other in the unconscious. Both theorists described the same confusion between self and other, but they attributed different explanations to the phenomenon. Whereas Mahler described the experience of feeling at one w

Collective will: a reformulation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation.

A reevaluation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation has been proposed which equates collective and individual will as essentia … idual and collective will are in fixed opposition to each other their results can be destructive to personality development and to interpersonal and societal relations in general. The relative value given to either individual or collective aspects of will may be partly a function of the historical and sociopolitical environment of both the individuals whose personality d …

Personality pathology and substance abuse in eating disorders: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Substance abuse has been shown to predict poor outcome in eating disorder (ED) samples, and prior cross-sectional data on personality subtypes of EDs suggest that substance abuse is associated with dysregulated and possibly avoidant-insecure subtypes. This study investigates longitudinal associations between personality and substance use. METHOD: Personality pathology and substance use were assessed in 213 individuals with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa at baseline; substance use was assessed at regular follow-up intervals over a 9-year period. RESULTS: Of the five personali

Ontogenetic emergence of behavioral consistency in a self-fertilizing fish.

Animal personality research assumes that behavioral repeatability indicates personality, yet this assumption has rarely been tested across ontogeny. Using the self-fertilizing fish Kryptolebias marmoratus under standardized conditions, minimizing genetic and environmental variation, we reveal a developmental dissociation between repeatability and personality. Boldness is highly repeatable from 10 days post-hatching (DPH) but fails to be consistent with later life stages. Behavioral stability emerges only at 60 DPH, coinciding with sexual maturation, and persists through 410 DPH. Extreme behavi

A Big Five facet analysis of sub-clinical dependent personality disorder (Dutifulness).

This study aimed to examine a Big Five, normal personality trait, "bright side" analysis of a sub-clinical personality disorder: Dependency Personality Disorder. Around 6000 British adults completed the NEO-PI-R which measures the Big Five personality factors at the domain and the facet level. They also completed the Hogan Development Survey (HDS) which has a measure of sub-clinical Dependency Personality Disorder called Dutiful as one of its eleven dysfunctional interpersonal tendencies. Correlation and regression results confirmed many of the associations between the Big Five domains and fac

Relationship between perfectionism, personality disorders and agoraphobia in patients with panic disorder.

OBJECTIVE: In earlier reports, we found that perfectionism might be involved in the development and/or maintenance of agoraphobia in panic disorder. The present report extends this work by examining the relationship between perfectionism and comorbidity with personality disorders in panic disorder patients with agoraphobia (PDA) and those without agoraphobia (PD). METHOD: We examined comorbidity of personality disorders by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Personality Disorders (SCID-II) and assessed perfectionism using multidimensional perfectionism scale in 56 PDA and 42 PD patien

Dental anxiety--etiologic considerations.

Dental disease is frequently accompanied by anxiety and fear of the treatment and of dentists. The etiology of any anxiety is sought in early conditioning life experiences; here it may be related to infants' responses to first teething. The universality of dental anxiety makes it a paradigm of psychosomatic disorders. These are conceptualized as pathologic exaggerated reactions to early traumatizing events, a causality not unlike that of conversive-hysteric symptoms or "normal" bodily characteristics. Psychiatric-etiologic considerations of dental anxiety are not to be found in the literature.

Harm avoidance and persistence are associated with somatoform disorder psychopathology: A study in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Whether personality features affect the development of somatoform disorders and their psychopathologies is an important issue. Aim of this study was to resolve this issue by comparing indicators of psychopathology and personality features in subjects with somatoform disorders and healthy controls. METHODS: This study recruited 148 subjects with somatoform disorders and 146 healthy controls. The severity of psychopathology was measured with the Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), Health Anxiety Questionnaire (HAQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and Beck Anxiety Inven

Personality as a risk factor for illicit opioid use and a protective factor for illicit opioid dependence.

BACKGROUND: Most studies investigating the role of personality as a risk factor for the development of opioid dependence compare dependent opioid users with healthy controls who never used heroin. In order to understand the potential protective role of personality, it is crucial to compare illicit opioid users who never became dependent with dependent opioid users. AIMS: This study aims to examine the role of personality as a risk factor for opioid use and as a protective factor for the development of opioid dependence. METHODS: Comparing personality factors between three groups: (1) 161 nev

A possible association of the norepinephrine transporter gene in the development of heroin dependence in Han Chinese.

OBJECTIVE: Noradrenergic pathways have been suggested to play a crucial role in the motivation-reward system of heroin dependence (HD), but so far, the role of the human norepinephrine transporter (NET; SLC6A2) gene in the pathogenesis of HD has never been investigated. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the NET gene is associated with the development of HD, and whether the NET gene influences specific personality traits. METHODS: Twelve single-nucleotide polymorphisms of the NET gene were analyzed in a case-control study of 965 Han Chinese participants (603 patients and 362 con

Bridging development and disturbance: A translational approach to the study of identity.

Across the subdisciplines of personality and clinical psychology, identity has been a psychological construct of wide-reaching importance in understanding both normative processes of human development as well as psychopathology. However, despite its wide-reaching importance, differences in the conceptualization and measurement of identity across these subdisciplines have contributed to more fragmentation, rather than unification, in our understanding of this central principle. In the present study, we sought to unify the measurement of identity across these subdisciplines through examining the

Neither single-marker nor haplotype analyses support an association between the dopamine transporter gene and heroin dependence in Han Chinese.

Much evidence suggests that dysfunction of dopamine transporter-mediated dopamine transmission may be involved in the pathophysiology of substance abuse and dependence. The aim of this study was to examine whether the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1; SLC6A3) is associated with the development of heroin dependence (HD) and whether DAT1 influences personality traits in patients with HD. Polymorphisms of DAT1 were analyzed in a case-control study of 1046 Han Chinese (615 patients and 431 controls). All participants were screened using a Chinese version of the modified Schedule of Affective Disord

Parenting and personality disorder: An overview and meta-synthesis of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Maladaptive parenting (including childhood maltreatment, abuse and neglect) has been implicated in the scientific literature exploring the aetiology of personality disorder, particularly borderline personality disorder (BPD). Our primary objective was to summarise the evidence on the relationship between parenting and personality disorder, assisting clinical decision-makers to translate this research into clinical policy and practice. METHODS: We conducted an overview of systematic reviews that assessed individuals with personality disorder pathology for experiences of

Personality, Psychological Factors, and Behavioral Tendencies in Children With Vocal Nodules: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review examined the evidence linking vocal nodule development in children to personality traits, psychological factors, and associated behavioral tendencies. METHODS: Four electronic databases-PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, EBSCO Host-as well as the reference lists from articles (including online sources) were searched. After screening for relevance, eight comparative, case-control studies were identified that met inclusion criteria. The quality of each study was evaluated by two raters using a modified, standardized checklist. RESULTS: Four studies were rated as

[Testing the significance of psychic factors in the etiology of alopecia areata. II. Examination of personality by means of Eysenck's Personality Inventory (MPI) adapted by Choynowski].

We evaluated the role of psychic factors in the etiopathogenesis of alopecia areata on the basis of Eysenck's Personality Inventory adapted by Choynowski. 55 patients were tested (28 women and 27 men). The control group consisted of 50 volunteers. The analysis of the results showed that the neurotic type of personality was predominant in the group of patients (43.64%). Neurotic personality found in such a high percentage of the patients with alopecia areata may be an additional element in the group of psychic factors that possibly have some influence on the development of the disease.

Fifty Years of Borderline Personality Disorder: A History of the Syndrome.

This year marks 50 years since John Gunderson and Margaret Singer identified borderline personality disorder as a distinct psychiatric disorder, yet the history of the syndrome predates this pioneering work by several decades. Undoubtedly, the evolution of the borderline personality disorder construct occupies a position of great importance in the history of psychiatry; debates surrounding its nature, etiology, and diagnosis continue to fill the pages of psychiatric and psychotherapy journals around the world. This article seeks to provide a brief overview of the history of borderline psychopa

Age at onset of bipolar disorder and risk for comorbid borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between bipolar disorder and cluster B personality disorders remains phenomenologically complex and controversial. We sought to examine the relationship between early age at onset of bipolar disorder and development of comorbid borderline personality disorder. METHODS: A total of 100 adults in an academic specialty clinic for bipolar disorder underwent structured diagnostic interviews and clinical assessments to determine lifetime presence of comorbid borderline personality disorder, histories of childhood trauma, and clinical illness characteristics.
