FEATURES OF PSYCHOPATHOLOGICAL REACTION IN PARENTS WHOSE CHILDREN SUFFER FROM CHRONIC MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: Was exploring features of psychopathological reaction in parents whose children suffer from chronic musculoskeletal disorders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: Clinically, 40 fathers and 64 mothers of children suffering from chronic muscular motor pathologies using M. Hamilton's Depression and Anxiety Scale and Buss-Durkee Hostility Invertory were examined. RESULTS: Results: It was revealed that the foundation of psychopathological reactions of parents to the chronic illness of children is depressive (from 68,2% to 97,0%) and anxiety (from 40.9% to 100.0%) dis

The joint structure of major depression, anxiety disorders, and trait negative affect.

BACKGROUND: Dimensional models of psychopathology demonstrate that two correlated factors of fear and distress account for the covariation among depressive and anxiety disorders. Nevertheless, these models tend to exclude variables relevant to psychopathology, such as temperament traits. This study examined the joint structure of DSM-IV-based major depression and anxiety disorders along with trait negative affect in a representative sample of adult individuals residing in the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: The sample consisted of 3,728 individuals who were administer

A Network Approach to Environmental Impact in Psychotic Disorder: Brief Theoretical Framework.

The spectrum of psychotic disorder represents a multifactorial and heterogeneous condition and is thought to result from a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. In the current paper, we analyze this interplay using network analysis, which has been recently proposed as a novel psychometric framework for the study of mental disorders. Using general population data, we construct network models for the relation between 3 environmental risk factors (cannabis use, developmental trauma, and urban environment), dimensional measures of psychopathology (anxiety, depression, interp

Therapists' emotional reactions to anxious inpatients during integrated behavioral-psychodynamic treatment: a psychometric evaluation of a feeling word checklist.

The purpose of this study was to examine the factor structure of a feeling checklist purported to measure therapists' emotional reactions to their patients, and to evaluate psychometrically the factor-based scales. Therapists completed the checklist after both a behavioral and a psychodynamic phase of a treatment program for inpatients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, and other phobic disorders. The results of factor analysis revealed three distinct dimensions: interest-boredom, insecurity-security, and anger. The corresponding three subscales proved to have a satisfactory internal consistenc…

The effects of pregnancy on preexisting panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence suggests that pregnancy may be associated with a reduction of panic and related symptoms. The authors investigate reported changes in panic symptoms during pregnancy. METHOD: Questionnaires asking about changes in panic and phobic avoidance symptoms during pregnancy were mailed to 129 women who had previously participated in our Anxiety Disorders Program over a 5-year period; all had diagnoses of panic disorder by DSM-III-R criteria. Reported here are responses from 22 of the women who experienced pregnancy after the onset of panic disorder. RESULTS: A majority o

Depression and panic anxiety: the effect of depressive co-morbidity on response to drug treatment of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia.

Numerous studies have established that there is increased co-morbidity of depressive symptoms among patients with panic disorder with and without agoraphobia, but questions remain as to whether the symptom pattern and clinical course are similar to that of primary depressions. The Cross-National Collaborative Panic Study was initiated to study the effects of alprazolam, a triazolobenzodiazepine, in the treatment of panic disorder. In the first phase, which included more than 500 subjects, alprazolam was compared against placebo. In the second phase, alprazolam was compared with imipramine and

Derealization and panic attacks: a clinical evaluation on 150 patients with panic disorder/agoraphobia.

One hundred fifty patients with Panic Disorder (PD) with or without Phobic Avoidance were subdivided into two groups on the basis of presence/absence of derealization and/or depersonalization (D-D) during panic attacks. D-D was found in 34.7% of the sample. By comparing the two groups, the patients with D-D were found to be younger and had an earlier onset of the disorder; they had a higher prevalence of avoidance behavior and a higher severity of the agoraphobic spectrum phobias. They were also more frequently subject to concomitant disorders such as Generalized Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive,

Anxiety sensitivity and panic symptoms: the moderating influence of distress tolerance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of consequences of anxiety-related sensations, and has been linked to the development of panic symptoms. Distress tolerance (DT) encompasses one's behavioral or self-perceived ability to handle aversive states. We examined whether higher DT buffers the relationship between AS and changes in panic symptoms across two timepoints, spaced ∼three weeks apart. DESIGN AND METHODS: At Time 1, 208 participants completed questionnaires and a physical DT task (breath-holding duration), a cognitive DT task (anagram persistence), and a self-r

Brief cognitive-behavioral versus nondirective therapy for panic disorder.

Thirty panic disorder patients were assigned randomly to four weekly sessions of either cognitive-behavioral therapy or nondirective, supportive therapy. Dependent variables included clinician ratings, standardized self-report questionnaires, and self-monitoring. Cognitive-behavioral therapy led to significant reductions in worry about the recurrence of panic, and in overall ratings of phobic distress. Nondirective supportive therapy did not produce significant effects. In addition, proportionately more patients who were actively panicking at preassessment and underwent cognitive-behavioral tr

Alpidem in the treatment of panic disorder.

Alpidem, an imidazopyridine that acts at the gamma-aminobutyric acid/benzodiazepine receptor complex, has been reported to be an effective anxiolytic with a more favorable side effect profile than benzodiazepines. The effect of alpidem was investigated in an 8-week, open, clinical trial in 13 patients with panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. Three patients were responders (much improved or very much improved), five patients were nonresponders, and five patients dropped out after less than 6 weeks of treatment. Significant improvement was seen in the sample as a whole for spontaneous p

Correlation of Psychosomatic Factors and Personality Traits With the Severity of Melanoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Melanoma, as a type of skin cancer, has undoubtedly gathered the interest of the global community in recent years, due to its rising incidence. Patients suffering from melanoma experience effects on their mental health, mainly depression and anxiety disorders. The present study aimed to examine the association of melanoma with the psychosomatic burden, personality traits, and demographic factors of the participants. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The psychometric instruments administered were: the Psychopathology Questionnaire (SCL-90), Beck Depression Scale (BDI), Eysenck Personality

Generalization of Extinguished Fear to Untreated Fear Stimuli after Exposure.

Exposure therapy is highly effective in treating excessive fear related to specific objects and/or situations. However, patients with anxiety disorders often display a generalization of fear responses toward conceptually and perceptually related stimuli and situations. It is unclear whether the beneficial effects of exposure on fear reduction toward treated fear stimuli can extend to untreated fear stimuli. Here, we investigated whether basic principles of extinction generalization apply to exposure. Spider-phobic participants were randomly assigned to either two sessions of exposure treatment

Emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms among patients with terminal chronic alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with toxic substance abuse syndrome, such as alcohol abuse, have elevated psychopathologic morbidity and mortality such as mood disorders. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the emotional-type psychopathologic symptoms in patients with alcohol-induced hepatic cirrhosis on the liver transplant waiting list. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis who were candidates for liver transplant (n = 41) completed the SA-45 questionnaire (González y Cuevas; 88), which assesses nine dimensions: somatizations, obsessive-compulsivity, interpersonal sensitivity, depressio

Effective-and Tolerable: Acceptance and Side Effects of Intensified Exposure for Anxiety Disorders.

Despite striking empirical support, exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders are underutilized. This is partially due to clinicians' concerns that patients may reject exposure or experience severe side effects, particularly in intensive forms of exposure. We examined acceptance and side effects of two randomly assigned variants of prediction error-based exposure treatment differing in temporal density (1 vs. 3 sessions/week) in 681 patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and multiple specific phobias. Treatment acceptance included treatment satisfaction and c

[How can school phobia be treated?].

What treatment is appropriate for 'school phobia'? The treatment of anxious school refusal in adolescence is necessarily multidisciplinary. It is often necessary to temper the sense of urgency associated with the anxiety of having to leave school. The reintroduction of schooling in parallel with the treatment process takes place in stages, particularly when the anxious refusal to attend school has become established. At the Maison de Solenn in Paris, several different types of treatment are offered, each of which complement the other. It is essential to adapt the timing of the various forms of

Novelty-retrieval-extinction paradigm to decrease high-intensity fear memory recurrence.

BACKGROUND: The retrieval-extinction paradigm based on memory reconsolidation can prevent fear memory recurrence more effectively than the extinction paradigm. High-intensity fear memories tend to resist reconsolidation. Novelty-retrieval-extinction can promote the reconsolidation of fear memory lacking neuroplasticity in rodents; however, whether it could effectively promote high-intensity fear memory reconsolidation in humans remains unclear. METHODS: Using 120 human participants, we implemented the use of the environment (novel vs. familiar) with the help of virtual reality technology. Nov
