Atomically-thin moiré superlattices offer a platform for interacting bosons, where strong onsite repulsion U xx suppresses double occupancy and supports excitonic Mott states at unit filling. However, moiré confinement also enhances phonon- and disorder-assisted relaxation, challenging the robustness of these correlated states under dissipation. Here we show that stronger intersite exciton repulsion V xx stabilizes these states. In H-stacked WSe2/WS2, moiré confinement endows interlayer excitons with an out-of-plane dipole and in-plane quadrupolar character. Helicity-resolved transient p

van der Waals (vdW) quaternary oxide structures, such as MgTeMoO6 slabs and nanoribbons, have recently emerged as promising platforms for demonstrating polariton propagation with hyperbolic dispersion and canalization. This expands the catalog of exceptional optical and electronic vdW materials. By leveraging topological transitions, various vdW heterostructures can induce extraordinary in-plane canalized polaritons. Yet, achieving long-range canalized polariton propagation has remained a significant challenge. In this study, we introduce a novel approach by covering the ridge tops of an MgTeM

Picophotonics describes light-matter interactions in which atomic-scale structure, sub-nanometer confinement, or picometer-scale structural variations significantly influence optical response. This review establishes a unified framework for understanding these interactions across plasmonic picocavities, molecular systems, and van der Waals (vdW) materials and heterostructures. We examine key mechanisms governing extreme optical confinement, including nonlocality, electron tunneling, charge-transfer effects, excitonic interactions, and phonon/plasmon polaritons. This article investigates how a uniform high-frequency (HF) drive applied to each site of a weakly coupled discrete nonlinear resonator array can modulate the onsite natural stiffness and damping and thereby facilitate the active tunability of the nonlinear response and the phonon dispersion relation externally. Starting from a canonical model of parametrically excited van der Pol-Duffing chain of oscillators with nearest-neighbor coupling, a systematic two-widely separated time scale expansion (Direct Partition of Motion) has been employed, in the backdrop of Blekhman's perturbation scheme. Excitonic insulating phase, a long-sought exotic quantum state, is formed by spontaneous condensation of electron-hole pairs or excitons. Stabilizing such a fragile many-body state in reduced dimensions requires precise control of multiple electronic parameters and external perturbations, which makes its material realization challenging, particularly at high temperatures. Here, using van der Waals layers of Ta 2 NiSe 5 as a material platform, we show that the excitonic insulating phase is stable up to T c ∼ 190 K in the two-dimensional limit. The distinctive signatures of the excitonic insu

As the weakest fundamental force, gravity yields only small accelerations from millimetre-scale masses, making them difficult to detect. Detecting the gravitational fields of microscopic objects is important for microscale sensing, imaging or studies of the impact of the quantum state of an object on gravity. Cavendish-type torsion balances can sensitively measure gravity from small source masses, but their integration with micro- and nanophotonic readout remains challenging. Here we show gravitational-force sensing of a millimetre-sized mass using a torsion pendulum integrated with optical mi

ReS2 belongs to a unique class of 2D materials with low structural symmetry and extremely weak interlayer bonding, which give rise to intriguing thermal properties, like in-plane anisotropic thermal conductivity (ATC) and anisotropic thermal expansion coefficient (ATEC). This study provides experimental evidence of in-plane ATC and ATEC in few-layer ReS2, revealed through simultaneous two-mode Raman thermometry. In a single optical configuration, ATC of ReS2 has been determined by simultaneous analysis of two anisotropic Raman modes (III and V) corresponding to in-plane crystallographic axes.

Janus transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers offer distinctive physical properties and device applications because their broken out-of-plane mirror symmetry induces an intrinsic out-of-plane dipole. High crystal quality is essential for accessing their intrinsic excitonic physics, yet improving Janus TMD quality remains challenging due to structural degradation and strain introduced during chalcogen substitution. To address this challenge, we develop a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-supported chalcogen substitution process that yields crack-free Janus TMD monolayers with improved opti

We investigate how the local solvent environment influences the fluorescent behavior of multiple fluorescent emitters with high likelihood of presence of single photon emitters (SPEs) in chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). Widefield total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy and hyperspectral confocal imaging were used to quantify emitter activation, emission spectra, and intermittency dynamics in air and after exposure to water, ethanol, isopropanol (IPA), and hexane. The apparent surface density of active emitters increased by factors of 2.1 ± 0.4, 2.5

Research on two dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic materials and heterobilayers is gaining prominence in spintronics. This study focuses on MPS3 monolayers and their van der Waals heterobilayers with GaN monolayers. We systematically investigated the structural stability, electronic properties, and magnetic characteristics of MPS3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Ni) monolayers via first-principles calculations, and explored their potential applications in optoelectronics and spintronics. Through phonon spectrum analysis, the dynamic stability of MPS3 monolayers was confirmed, and their bond lengths, charge d

Conventional Cu doping in Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 relies on high-temperature alloying, which tunes carrier concentration but also introduces structural disorder that degrades mobility and limits thermoelectric performance. To overcome this issue, a thermally driven Cu intercalation approach is developed that inserts Cu atoms into the van der Waals (vdW) gaps and employs spark plasma sintering (SPS) to form a well-textured architecture. Cu intercalation modifies the interlayer registry, while SPS-induced basal-plane alignment preserves single-crystal-like anisotropic transport and mitigates the cleavage

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials exhibit the counterintuitive property of volume contraction upon heating, which is critical for precision engineering applications. While significant progress has been made in NTE material discovery and mechanism understanding, developing cost-effective systems with strong NTE effects remains challenging. Here we report that an economical phosphate material, KZn(PO3)3, which demonstrates a record-breaking volumetric contraction (ΔV/V = -11.49%) during its low-temperature to high-temperature phase transition. This exceptional NTE behavior originates fr

Spintronics can reduce the energy consumption of electronic devices. Perovskites have recently emerged as promising spintronic materials. The design of perovskite spintronic devices relies on the understanding and control of spin relaxation processes, which remain challenging. Here, we report a lightweight predictive model for the ultrafast spin relaxation rate based on a set of intrinsic descriptors that are either quantum-chemically computable or directly derivable from molecular composition. The model, constructed using an artificial neural network (ANN) and trained on a curated dataset of

This study thoroughly investigates the lead-free halide double perovskites Na2TmAeCl6 (Ae = Ag, Cu) using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) within the CASTEP framework. The formation energies are -3.987 eV for Na2TmAgCl6 and -3.453 eV for Na2TmCuCl6. Additionally, phonon spectra without imaginary frequencies confirm their thermodynamic and dynamic stability. Both compounds adopt a cubic Fm-3m structure with tolerance factors of 0.76 and 0.83, placing them within the stable perovskite range. The elastic constants meet the Born-Huang stability criteria, and Pugh's ratios of 3.48 f

Polarons and spin-orbit (SO) coupling are distinct quantum effects that play a critical role in charge transport and spin-orbitronics. Polarons originate from strong electron-phonon interaction and are ubiquitous in polarizable materials featuring electron localization, in particular 3d transition metal oxides (TMOs). On the other hand, the relativistic coupling between the spin and orbital angular momentum is notable in lattices with heavy atoms and develops in 5d TMOs, where electrons are spatially delocalized. Here we combine ab initio calculations and magnetic measurements to show that the

The interaction of electronic spin and molecular vibrations mediated by spin-orbit coupling governs spin relaxation in molecular qubits. We derive an extended molecular spin Hamiltonian that includes both adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin-dependent interactions, and we implement the computation of its matrix elements using state-of-the-art density functional theory. The new molecular spin Hamiltonian contains a novel spin-vibrational orbit interaction with a non-adiabatic origin, together with the traditional molecular Zeeman and zero-field splitting interactions with an adiabatic origin. The synthesis, structural, phonon, optical, and magnetic properties of two hybrid organic-inorganic chlorides with monoprotonated methylhydrazinium cations (CH3NH2NH2+, MHy+), [CH3NH2NH2]CdCl3 (MHyCdCl3), and [CH3NH2NH2]CuCl3 (MHyCuCl3), are reported. In contrast to previously reported MHyMIICl3 (MII = Mn2+, Ni2+, and Co2+) analogues, neither compound undergoes phase transitions. The MHyCuCl3 has a crystal structure familiar to previous crystals composed of edge-shared 1D chains of the [CuCl5N] octahedra. MHyCuCl3 crystallizes in monoclinic P21/c symmetry with MHy+ cations directly linked to t

The zinc-antimony phase space has been heavily investigated due to the structural complexity and abundance of high-performing thermoelectric materials. Consequentially, the desire to use zinc and antimony as framework elements to encage rattling cations and achieve phonon-glass-electron-crystal-type properties has remained an enticing goal with only two alkali metal clathrates to date, Cs8Zn18Sb28 and K58Zn122Sb207. Guided by Zintl electron-counting predictions, we explored the Ba-Zn-Pn (Pn = As, Sb) phase space proximal to the expected composition of the type-I clathrate. In situ powder X-ray

We report a new hybrid organic-inorganic Cu(I) halide, (TMS)3Cu2I5 (TMS = trimethylsulfonium), which demonstrates high efficiency and stable yellow light emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) over 25%. The zero-dimensional crystal structure of the compound is comprised of isolated face-sharing photoactive [Cu2I5]3- tetrahedral dimers surrounded by TMS+ cations. This promotes strong quantum confinement and electron-phonon coupling, leading to a highly efficient emission from self-trapped excitons. The hybrid structure ensures prolonged stability and nonblue emission compared to
