Asymmetric mislocalization of a visual flash ahead of and behind a moving objectt.

When subjects localize a flash relative to another stationary stimulus, the flash appears displaced in the direction of nearby motion signals (position capture; Whitney and Cavanagh, 2000 Nature Neuroscience 3 954-959). Our previous study had suggested that the position capture is larger for a flash presented ahead of a moving stimulus than for a flash behind it (Watanabe et al, 2003 Perception 32 545-559). In the present study, I investigated the spatial asymmetry of position capture. Experiment 1 demonstrated that asymmetric position capture occurs primarily in a moving-object-centered coord

Effects of alcohol on verbal processing: an event-related potential study.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral studies suggest that alcohol intoxication impairs the speed and accuracy of word recognition and categorization, but alcohol's effects on the brain during verbal cognitive processing are not adequately understood. Using event-related potentials (ERP) and a word-recognition paradigm, this study investigated the effects of alcohol intoxication on prelexical, semantic, and mnemonic aspects of verbal processing. METHODS: Concurrent measures of ERPs and skin conductance responses were obtained in a word-repetition priming task and permitted a comparison of the effects of alc

Photic driving in the electroencephalogram of children and adolescents: harmonic structure and relation to the resting state.

In order to identify latent bioelectrical oscillators, 15 normal subjects (aged 9-17 years, 8 males, 7 females) were subjected to intermittent photic stimulation. The EEG amplitude spectra corresponding to the 11 fixed frequencies of stimulation presented (3-24 Hz) were combined to form "profiles" of the driving reaction in the right occipital area. The driving response varied with frequency, and was demonstrable in 70-100% of cases (using as criterion peak amplitudes 20% larger than those of the neighbors). The strongest responses were observed at the frequency closest to the alpha peak of th…

The blocking effect of pictorial prompts on sight-word reading.

This study replicates and extends previous work showing that pictorial prompts can interfere with the learning of sight words by students with moderate mental retardation. Effects of training with 6 students were assessed during five conditions using an alternating treatments design. In four conditions, words were presented either alone or with a corresponding picture. In a fifth condition, pictures were used to provide feedback. The results showed that acquisition was achieved fastest during the word-alone conditions with 5 students.

Benzodiazepine effects on flicker sensitivity: role of stimulus frequency and size.

1. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) impair sensitivity to temporally modulated visual stimuli (flicker). Critical flicker-fusion frequency (CFF) is commonly used as a measure of this effect, but it only measures sensitivity to a narrow range of frequencies, usually above 25 Hz. Are other frequencies more sensitive to the effects of BZDs? 2. Flicker sensitivity at 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 Hz was measured for 1 degrees and 5 degrees stimuli before and 50 to 100 minutes after triazolam (0.25 mg), lorazepam (1.0 mg) and placebo. Drug effects on CFF were also measured. 3. Both BZDs significantly impaired overa

Effects of monocular deprivation on the visual fields of squirrel monkeys.

Five squirrel monkeys were monocularly deprived at birth for 3 years. Visual field testing for the deprived eye revealed no responses to visual stimuli at any position, including the monocular segment. These results are similar to those obtained in macaque monkeys after long-term neonatal monocular deprivation and indicate that lack of patterned visual input to an eye during development in primates can produce functional blindness throughout the visual field. Because the monocular segment of the visual field was not spared, binocular competition cannot be the only mechanism underlying this los

Double-flash responses in different retinal layers.

Stimulating the isolated arterially perfused cat eye with two consecutive flashes (double flashes) we have studied the reduction of the 2nd response recorded from outer (isolated PIII component of the ERG), middle (b-wave) and inner (optic nerve response, ONR) retinal layers. The spectral sensitivity of the mechanism that reduces the amplitude of the 2nd response, determined by a constant threshold of 20% amplitude reduction of the b-wave, could be matched by a 500 nm pigment absorption function. For a given stimulus irradiance the response reduction was largest in the b-wave and smaller in th

Retinal cyclic light damage threshold for albino rats.

This study determined the minimum cyclic [12L:12D] light intensity which produces retinal damage in albino (Sprague-Dawley) rats raised from birth to 15 weeks of age under a cyclic light intensity of 6 lux. Four experimental light intensities were tested, including: 1345, 270, 130 and 65 lux. Control animals remained under 6 lux. For each of the intensities tested, the retinas of groups of six rats were evaluated after various durations of light exposure for physiological and morphological evidence of light damage. The indices of damage were (a) histological and morphometric changes in the ret

Interindividual variation and additivity of the visual evoked potentials to the local checkerboard stimulation of the central and paracentral retina.

Visually evoked cortical potentials to reversing checkerboard stimulation were recorded from normal subjects. Different locations of the central visual field of maximally 8 degrees radius were stimulated. Stimulation of various parts of the central visual field changed the waveform and the amplitude of the responses of different subjects very individually. This makes it impossible to make a universal decision, how large field or which part of the central field contributes most to pattern evoked cortical potentials. The responses to the upper half field stimulation showed greatest variation mak

Cortical visual evoked potentials during the sleep-wakefulness cycle in the freely moving cat. A dynamic study.

The dynamic features of visual evoked potentials, elicited by a light emitting diode chronically implanted in the frontal sinus of the freely moving cat, were studied during sleep stages by means of calculation of the power spectra of the EEG prior to the stimulus and the poststimulus EEG which contain the single evoked potential. The statistical analysis between mean frequencies from both EEG prior to the stimulus and single evoked potential, within each sleep stage, showed that the main changes occurred during slow sleep, with a significant increase in the percentage of the alpha band. These

[Photoaugmentation. a photobiological phenomenon (author's transl)].

The phenomenon of photoaugmentation was investigated in 37 male and female patients. UVA, UVB and UVC was applied with a high intensity grafting monochromator. Photoaugmentation could be induced following UVA plus UVB immediately or dissociated up to 3 h, but not after 24 h (15 J/cm2 lambda 351 less than or equal to 389 nm [UVA] + 13 mJ/cm2 lambda 290 less than or equal to 310 nm [UVB] = 1/2 MED). Simarily the reversed application of UVB plus UVA lead to photoaugmentation. With UVA plus UVC, photoaugmentation could not be elicited in every patient. Moreover, photoaugmentation was demonstrated

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation enhances learning of novel letter-sound relationships in adults.

BACKGROUND: Reading is a critical skill in modern society but is significantly more difficult to acquire during adulthood. Many adults are required to learn a new orthography after this window closes for personal or vocational reasons and while many programs and training methods exist for learning to read in adulthood, none result in native-like fluency. Implantable cervical vagus nerve stimulation is capable of driving neural plasticity but is invasive and not practical as a reading intervention. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current study was to evaluate whether non-invasive transcutaneous aur
