Light-induced reproductive responses in white-rumped munia (Lonchura striata).

Photoperiod is a primary cue for most birds to initiate reproductive activities. How light influences the reproduction-linked processes in white-rumped munia is largely unknown. A series of experiments were performed on male birds. In experiment one, birds were exposed to either short (SD; 8 L: 16D) or long day length (LD; 15 L:9D) for one day and sampled at 19 h after light onset. In experiment two, birds were exposed to either SD (8 L: 16D), or equinox photoperiod (12 L:12D), or to LD (15 L:9D). In experiment 3, birds were exposed to an equinox photoperiod of 10 lx, 50 lx, or 100 lx. In expe…

Reproductive performance of multiparous rabbit lactating does: effect of lighting programs and PMSG use.

This study aims to determine if Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG), used for oestrous synchronization in multiparous lactating does, could be replaced by one of the following lighting schedules without impairing reproductive performance: (a) 12-h L (light)/12-h D (dark) or (b) 8-h L/16-h D, until day 6 before artificial insemination (AI), when in both cases photoperiod was changed to 16-h L/8-h D and maintained until the day of AI, and in the following 4 days post Al the light hours were progressively reduced to the initial schedules. Two groups of 20 does each were respectively submitte…

A phase-dependent delay of the chick pineal rhythm in rate of thymidine incorporation by brief exposure to ouabain.

Cultured chick pineal glands show a persistent rhythm in the rate of cumulative incorporation of thymidine into DNA [Wainwright and Wainwright, 1989]. In this study we have examined the effects of a pulse-exposure to ouabain in the dark on the first day of culture upon thymidine incorporation during the second and third days of culture in the dark with ouabain-free medium. The phase of the rhythm in rate of thymidine incorporation was delayed by a 4-hr exposure to 100 microM ouabain commencing in the final hour of the photoperiod, but not by a 2-hr exposure or by 10 microM ouabain. This effect…

Comparative Evaluation of Sexual Behavior, Semen Characteristics and Environmental Modulation in Local Algerian and New Zealand White Rabbit Bucks.

This study aimed to characterize the reproductive performance of the local Algerian population (LAP) compared with the New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits, by evaluating sexual behavior, semen characteristics, and their modulation by environmental factors, namely photoperiod and temperature-humidity index (THI). Mature bucks (n = 14/breed) were monitored from January to April, with two successive ejaculates collected weekly. Sexual behavior, macroscopic and microscopic semen parameters, and testosterone concentrations were assessed. The effects of breed, ejaculate order, environmental factors, and…

Season dependent effects of urban environment on circadian clock of tree sparrow (Passer montanus).

Great efforts have been made recently to understand the effect(s) of urban environments on the circadian and seasonal physiology of wild ani … rban habitats during periods corresponding to their three physiological states, i.e., June (longest photoperiod; reproductive phase), September (equinox photoperiod; refractory phase), and December (shortest photoperiod; sensitive phase). Birds (N = 5 per time per site per month) were sampled at six time points; ZT1, ZT5, ZT9, ZT13, ZT17, and ZT21 (ZT0 = sunr …

Seasonal trend of acute pelvic inflammatory disease.

PURPOSE: Many infections follow a seasonal trend. Aim of our study was to check whether acute pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) follows a seasonal progress. METHODS: In a retrospective study on 12,152 hospital records, 158 cases of acute pelvic inflammatory disease were identified. Periodogram analysis was applied to the date of pelvic inflammatory disease admission and to related environmental factors, such as temperature and photoperiod. RESULTS: Pelvic inflammatory disease follows a seasonal rhythm with mean to peak variation of 23 % and maximal values in September (±37.2 days). The rhyth…

Fetal prolactin levels respond to a maternal melatonin implant.

Seasonal PRL changes in adult sheep are controlled by photoperiod. The ability to detect photoperiod is mediated by the pineal gland through melatonin secretion. A rhythm in plasma melatonin has been described in fetal sheep. In this work we investigated whether the fetus responds to changes in circulating levels of melatonin. Fetal plasma PRL was measured every 2 h for 24 h, 7 days after the mother had received a sc Silastic implant containing approximately 1 g melatonin. Control fetuses received an empty implant. Melatonin is slowly released from implants, and it is known to cross the sheep …

Common garden comparison of the leaf-out phenology of woody species from different native climates, combined with herbarium records, forecasts long-term change.

A well-timed phenology is essential for plant growth and reproduction, but species-specific phenological strategies are still poorly underst … also monitored here. Southern climate-adapted species flushed significantly later than natives, and photoperiod- and chilling- sensitive species all flushed late. The herbarium method revealed the extent of species-specific climate tracking. Our results forecast that: (1) a northward expansion of southern species due to climate warming will increase the numbe …

A thermosensory pathway controlling flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Onset of flowering is controlled by environmental signals such as light and temperature. Molecular-genetic studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have focused on daily light duration, or photoperiod, and transient exposure to winter-like temperatures, or vernalization. Yet ambient growth temperature, which is strongly affected by current changes in global climate, has been largely ignored. Here, we show that genes of the autonomous pathway, previously thought only to act independently of the environment as regulators of the floral repressor FLC (ref. 1), are centrally involved in mediating the effect…

Reproduction-related behaviors of Swiss-Webster female mice living in a cold environment.

Based on a molecular neuroendocrine theory about cold environments, thyroid hormone levels, and liganded thyroid hormone receptor interference with estrogen receptor function, experiments were designed to test female mouse reproductive behaviors in the cold. Because natural seasonal temperature declines would usually be associated with decreased photoperiods and reduced food supplies, we combined cold temperatures with short days and metabolic challenge. The simplest hypothesis was that lordosis quotients would be significantly reduced as a result of cold temperatures. That hypothesis was deni…

HSP47 expression in the hamster Sertoli cell: An immunohistochemical study.

HSP47, a chaperone whose main function is the maturation of collagen molecules, is considered a marker of fibrotic diseases. Increased collagen synthesis in the testis has been associated with various pathologies leading to seminiferous tubule regression. Our aim was to study whether HSP47 is expressed in hamster Sertoli cells both in the adult and in two physiological situations of seminiferous tubule atrophy: irreversible testicular ageing and testicular regression due to short photoperiod (reversible). Eighteen animals were divided as follows: a group of 6 young animals aged 6 months, a gro…

The circadian nature of melatonin secretion in Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Plasma melatonin concentrations were measured in Japanese quail held under different photoperiods and constant darkness (< 1 lux). When subjected to LD6:18 (6 hr light: 18 hr darkness), levels rose approximately 2 hr after lights-off, attained a peak level 8 hr after lights off, and subsequently declined to low daytime levels before the next lights-on signal. This generated a distinct daily rhythm in melatonin secretion with a duration of approximately 13 h. On exposing quail to a range of photoperiods, containing 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, or 20 hr of light per day, the onset of melatonin secr…

Adaptive inducibility of CREM as transcriptional memory of circadian rhythms.

The CREM gene encodes the transcriptional repressor ICER, which has been implicated in the molecular mechanisms controlling circadian rhythm … response of the CREM gene to adrenergic stimulation is determined by night length. Depending on the photoperiod of the prior entraining cycles, the CREM gene is either subsensitive or supersensitive to induction. This differential responsiveness is controlled by the changing balance between positive (CREB) and negative (ICER) transcriptional regulators. Thus, …

A novel role for the pineal gland: Regulating seasonal shifts in the gut microbiota of Siberian hamsters.

The gut microbiota plays a significant role in a variety of host behavioral and physiological processes. The mechanisms by which the gut microbiota and the host communicate are not fully resolved but include both humoral and direct neural signals. The composition of the microbiota is affected by internal (host) factors and external (environmental) factors. One such signal is photoperiod, which is represented endogenously by nocturnal pineal melatonin (MEL) secretion. Removal of the MEL signal via pinealectomy abolishes many seasonal responses to photoperiod. In Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sung…

UV-C mediated accumulation of pharmacologically significant phytochemicals under light regimes in in vitro culture of Fagonia indica (L.).

Fagonia indica (L.) is an important medicinal plant with multitude of therapeutic potentials. Such application has been attributed to the presence of various pharmacological important phytochemicals. However, the inadequate biosynthesis of such metabolites in intact plants has hampered scalable production. Thus, herein, we have established an in vitro based elicitation strategy to enhance such metabolites in callus culture of F. indica. Cultures were exposed to various doses of UV radiation (UV-C) and grown in different photoperiod regimes and their impact was evaluated on biomass accumulation…
