The scarcity of blood for transfusion purposes has been widely acknowledged. Surgical therapeutic processes, war zones, and post-disaster treatments demand a huge amount of blood. Modern-day laboratories also require blood for bioengineering experimentation. Therefore, an artificially devised solution capable of mimicking the blood functions from biological and engineering relevance would be a noteworthy discovery of contemporary science. The experience drawn from discarded century-old blood substitutes has led us to technologically more advanced present-day solutions, which are better at carr

This article presents information on medical applications of fluorocarbons. These inert chemicals have a high solubility for the respiratory gases and, in emulsified form, are present in the oxygen-transporting plasma substitutes now undergoing clinical trials. Oxygen content is directly related to arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2). Thus, although oxygen transport of Fluosol-DA 20% (FDA) is only 0.75 ml per 100 ml per 10 kPa, oxygen delivery at the tissues will be adequate in the presence of a high PaO2. FDA has a low viscosity at low shear rates and this, together with a very small e…

BACKGROUND: We previously developed substitutes for red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets (PLTs) for transfusion. These substitutes included hemoglobin vesicles (HbVs) and fibrinogen γ-chain (dodecapeptide HHLGGAKQAGDV, H12)-coated, adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-encapsulated liposomes [H12-(ADP)-liposomes]. Here, we examined the efficacy of combination therapy using these substitutes instead of RBC and PLT transfusion in a rabbit model with trauma-induced massive hemorrhage with coagulopathy.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Thrombocytopenia (PLT count approximately 40,000/μL) was induced in rabbits by

BACKGROUND: The inherent risks of blood transfusion have led to concerted efforts to find alternatives to allogeneic blood transfusion. Among these alternatives are supplementation with iron and treatment with erythropoietin, autologous pre-donation before major elective surgery, intraoperative blood salvage (particularly for emergency cases or when major blood loss is unanticipated), acute normovolemic hemodilution, and artificial blood substitutes.
METHODS: Review of pertinent English-language literature.
RESULTS: Autologous pre-donation of the patient's own blood, even if supplemented wit

Military and civilian medical organisations have long recognised that an oxygen-carrying volume expander which is easy to store, transport and administer could be life-saving for trauma victims. Concern over fatal blood-borne pathogens including hepatitis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as well as a shrinking donor pool further highlight the need for such a product. A variety of substances that transport oxygen and augment intravascular volume in the absence of red cells are emerging as possible "blood substitutes" for use in humans. These include haemoglobin solutions, liposome encaps
