BACKGROUND: Amniotic fluid embolism is an unpredictable and sometimes lethal complication of childbirth. Fibrinogen γ-chain peptide-coated, ADP-encapsulated Liposomes (H12-(ADP)-liposomes), which were developed as a platelet substitute, may be useful to control postpartum hemorrhage with consumptive coagulopathy.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a hemodynamically stable amniotic fluid embolism animal model and evaluate the efficacy of H12-ADP-liposome infusion in the initial management of postpartum hemorrhage complicated with amniotic fluid embolism-involved coagulopathy.

The principal result of the development of hemovigilance since 1994 has been the declaration of undesirable effects likely to be due to transfusions of labile blood products. Using the 1,694 cases of undesirable effects registered, it seemed worthwhile to us to analyze the distribution of the signs noticed, their frequency and the types of blood products responsible. A premature male infant with hyaline membrane disease received a 34 ml transfusion of packed erythrocytes from a CPDA1 blood unit on day 2 with no adverse consequences. On day 34 he was given a transfusion, and the platelet count decreased. Intravenous immune globulin therapy was initiated and the platelet count steadily increased. Human leukocyte (HLA) antigen and platelet antibody testing showed that the thrombocytopenia was due to passive transfer of platelet-specific antibody from the blood donor.

In this prospective study, 26 consecutive patients being treated for haematological malignancies receiving standard (i.e. non-leucocyte-depleted) blood components were observed for the development of refractoriness to platelet transfusions.
