Nanofertilizers and nanopesticides provide significant agricultural benefits through enhanced nutrient efficiency and reduced pesticide application; however, their nanoscale properties raise environmental safety concerns. As emerging ecological technologies designed to minimize environmental footprints, these nano-enabled agrochemicals require systematic safety evaluation. However, conventional ecotoxicity tests-designed for soluble chemicals-cannot adequately capture nanoparticle stability, aggregation, or time-dependent exposure, creating a 'measurement gap' in risk assessment. An essential adaptive strategy in insects is the evolution of olfactory receptors (ORs) to recognize important volatile environmental chemical cues. Our model species, Ceratosolen fusciceps, a specialist wasp pollinator of Ficus racemosa, likely possesses an OR repertoire that allows it to distinguish fig-specific volatiles in highly variable environments. Using a newly assembled genome-guided transcriptome, we annotated 63 ORs in the species and reconstructed the phylogeny of Ceratosolen ORs in conjunction with other hymenopteran species. Expression analysis showed that though ORs were mainly

Florivores consume floral structures with negative effects on plant fitness and pollinator attraction. Several studies have evaluated these consequences in hermaphroditic plants, but little is known about the effects on monoecious and dioecious species. We characterize the florivory and its effects on floral visitors and reproductive success in a monoecious population of Sagittaria lancifolia. Five categories of florivory were established according to the petal area consumed. Visits were recorded in male and female flowers within the different damage categories. Reproductive success was evalua

The use of sewage sludge as a soil improver has been promoted in agroecosystems. However, sludges can contain toxic trace elements because of suboptimal wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, field studies investigating the negative effects of these practices on pollinators are lacking. We collected honeybees from an area where sewage sludge use is widespread, and one where it is precluded. Trace elements in soils and bees were quantified. Cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, and nickel were investigated because they were the least correlated elements to each other and are known to be toxic. Their le

Studying the evolution of genomic divergence between lineages is a topical issue in evolutionary biology. However, the evolutionary forces that shape the heterogeneous divergence of the genomic landscape are still poorly understood. Here, two wind-pollinated sister-species (Ostrya japonica and O. chinensis) are used to explore what these potential forces might be. A total of 40 individuals from 16 populations across their main distribution areas in China were sampled for genome-wide resequencing. Population demography analyses revealed that these two sister-species diverged at 3.06-4.43 Mya. B

Securing food supply for a growing population is a major challenge and heavily relies on the use of agrochemicals to maximize crop yield. It is increasingly recognized, that some neonicotinoid insecticides have a negative impact on non-target organisms, including important pollinators such as the European honeybee Apis mellifera. Toxicity of neonicotinoids may be enhanced through simultaneous exposure with additional pesticides, which could help explain, in part, the global decline of honeybee colonies. Here we examined whether exposure effects of the neonicotinoid thiamethoxam on bee viabilit

Since the early 1990s, ash dieback due to the invasive ascomycete Hymenoscyphus fraxineus is threatening Fraxinus excelsior in most of its natural range. Previous studies reported significant levels of genetic variability in susceptibility in F. excelsior either in field or inoculation experiments. The present study was based on a field experiment planted in 1995, 15 years before onset of the disease. Crown and collar status were monitored on 777 trees from 23 open-pollinated progenies originating from three French provenances. Health status was modeled using a Bayesian approach where spatiote

Female Pangoniinae in the tabanid fly genus Philoliche can display remarkably elongated proboscis lengths, which are adapted for both blood- and nectar-feeding. Apart from their role as blood-sucking pests, they represent important pollinators of the South African flora. This study examines the morphology of the feeding apparatus of two species of long-proboscid Tabanidae: Philoliche rostrata and Philoliche gulosa - both species display adaptations for feeding from a diverse guild of long-tubed flowers, and on vertebrate blood. The heavily sclerotised proboscis can be divided into two function

Mimicry is the close resemblance of one living organism (the mimic) to another (the model), leading to misidentification by a third organism (the operator). Similar to other organism groups, certain species of plant-parasitic fungi are known to engage in mimetic relationships, thereby increasing their fitness. In some cases, fungal infection can lead to the formation of flower mimics (pseudo flowers) that attract insect pollinators via visual and/or olfactory cues; these insects then either transmit fungal gametes to accomplish outcrossing (e.g. in some heterothallic rust fungi belonging to th

Anthropogenic changes create evolutionarily novel environments that present opportunities for emerging diseases, potentially changing the balance between host and pathogen. Honey bees provide essential pollination services, but intensification and globalization of honey bee management has coincided with increased pathogen pressure, primarily due to a parasitic mite/virus complex. Here, we investigated how honey bee individual and group phenotypes are altered by a virus of concern, Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV). Using automated and manual behavioral monitoring of IAPV-inoculated individu…

Commercial beekeepers in the US reported severe colony losses early in 2025, as colonies were being staged for their critical role in the almond pollination season in California. Average reported losses since the preceding spring exceeded 60%, with substantial variation among operations. Many colonies were still actively collapsing in January 2025, at which time pooled and individual samples were collected and then screened for levels of 13 known honey bee pathogens and parasites. Acute bee paralysis virus and other known viral pathogens were found at high levels in pooled bee samples from all…

Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and bees have a mutually beneficial relationship where nectar is exchanged for pollination service, which may enhance seed yield. However, pesticide use on soybeans during flowering could disrupt this relationship by harming bees and therefore reducing the yield benefits from pollinatiors. This study examined how pesticide applications during flowering affect bee foraging and soybean yield, focusing on application timing (mid-morning vs. mid-day) and flowering stage (R3-full bloom vs. R5-late/end of bloom), compared to an untreated control. To do this, an expe…

Distant hybridization is an important breeding strategy that can effectively expand the genetic pool for developing new, high-yielding, and … f their activity. Specifically, incompatible PT growth in stylar tissues during the first 4 h after pollination was accompanied by a five- to six-fold increase in caspase-3-like protease activity. Notably, the arrest of PT growth in distant hybridization shows striking similarity to that observed during S-RNase-based self-incompatibility (SI) in Solanaceae. W …

BACKGROUND: Maize (Zea mays L.), as the most widely cultivated cereal and a dietary cornerstone, provides not only carbohydrates but also essential micronutrients critical for human health, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids. However, conventional maize varieties typically exhibit suboptimal levels of these compounds. This study investigated the dynamic accumulation of vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids, along with their transcriptional regulation, during early kernel development (9-15 days after pollination (DAP)) in maize.
RESULTS: Combined metabolite and transcriptome analy…

The magnesium chelatase subunit CHLI is well-characterized in chlorophyll biosynthesis, but its role in plant immunity remains unclear. In this study, we generated chimeric Fvchli mutant strawberries via CRISPR/Cas9 and obtained T1-T3 progeny with a wide range of editing efficiencies through self-pollination. Mutants with higher editing efficiency exhibited more leaf spots. Following inoculation with Xanthomonas fragariae, Fvchli mutants showed increased susceptibility, with both lesion area and disease incidence positively correlating with editing efficiency. We further demonstrated that stom…

Recessive opaque2 (o2) and opaque16 (o16) genes enhance lysine and tryptophan in maize kernels. Though few o2, o16-, and o2o16-based maize genotypes have been developed, the transition of quality attributes and seed morphology through different stages of kernel development has not been studied yet. To understand the role of o2 and o16 genes in the regulation of essential amino acids and kernel opaqueness in maize, we analyzed the accumulation pattern of lysine and tryptophan, and the occurrence of opaqueness in the developing kernels at 15, 30, and 45 days after pollination (DAP) among a set o…

Maize kernel hardness, largely determined by the structural and compositional characteristics of the endosperm, is a key trait affecting gra … nes (D003, vitreous; D009, starchy) at three kernel developmental stages (18, 25, and 32 days after pollination, DAP). Cytological examination revealed that D003 endosperms comprise smaller, tightly packed cells containing polygonal starch granules, whereas D009 endosperms consist of larger, irregular cells with loosely arranged spherical starch granules. Solar radiation is an important environmental variable for terrestrial animals, but its impact on the heat balance of large flying insects has been poorly studied. Desert bees are critical to ecosystem function through their pollination services, and are exposed to high radiant loads. We assessed the role of solar radiation in the heat balance of flying desert Centris pallida bees by calculating heat budgets for individuals in a respirometer in shaded versus sunny conditions from 16 to 37°C air temperatures, comparing the large and small male morphs and females. Solar radiation was responsible…
