BACKGROUND: An early initiation of antifungal therapy in invasive fungal infections (IFIs) is critical in reducing the high mortality rate. Current diagnosis of fungal infection relies on microscopy, culture, antigen, antibody specific tests and histological diagnosis. However, these tests either lack sensitivity or specificity. There is thus the need for a rapid, specific and accurate diagnostic method.

This paper reports a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) based on the msa2c gene and standardized with Platinum SYBR Green/ROX for the detection of Babesia bovis in cattle. We evaluated the clinical value of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for screening Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in non-HIV-infected immunocompromised patients. We retrospectively analyzed PCR and Grocott's methenamine silver (GMS) staining on 1044 clinical specimens obtained from 756 patients.
