Three patients with lipoma arborescens of the knee joint were evaluated with high resolution ultrasonography. All patients demonstrated a hyperechoic, frondlike mass in the suprapatellar bursa with a large associated effusion. All had popliteal cyst formation without involvement by the mass. Dynamic compression and manipulation of the suprapatellar effusion demonstrated pliable and flexible nature of mass with bending and waving of the frondlike mass in real time. Comparison with MR imaging demonstrated similar extent, location, and morphology of the mass. The characteristic features of this l…

Two cases of cystic adventitial disease treated at our institution over the last year are presented. They were middle-aged and apparently healthy patients, and the symptoms begin with a sudden onset of unilateral claudication. After performing a magnetic resonance angiography, a cystic formation attached to the adventitia of the popliteal artery was identified. Both patients were treated in the same manner, with resection of the affected arterial segment and vein bypass interposition. Both remain asymptomatic after one year of follow-up in one case and six months in the other. Cystic adventiti

In a series of 342 arterial reconstructions of the iliacolic to popliteal arteries 24 patients with lymph vessel damage were observed. The diagnosis of lymphedema was established in 18 patients by clinical findings and in 2 of them the diagnosis was confirmed by lymphography with followup of 1 year. Three patients developed an internal lymphogenic cyst, 3 showed an external lymph fistula, and 1 patient developed an infection of a dacron bifurcation graft. The infection occurred when an additional occlusion of the left femoral artery was bypassed with an autologous saphenous vein graft and a ly

Muscle hydatidosis is rare, accounting only for 3-5% of all cases. We present a case series of 9 patients (8 male, one female, mean age 59.3 years, range 48-75 years) with primary echinococcosis of skeletal muscles. The cysts presented as soft tissue masses in 8 patients, whereas in one, the cyst was an incidental finding on a CT scan performed for investigation of a lung problem. All hydatid cysts were confined into muscles, without affecting the bone. The location was the thigh region in 6 patients (quadriceps in 4, biceps in 2), the popliteal fossa (gastrocnemius) in one, the humerus (trice

The diagnostic approach and therapeutic attitudes to be assumed when facing the dilemma of deep vein thrombosis versus a complicated Baker's … tients in a systematic way in order to better understand the inter-relationship between complicated popliteal cysts and venous alterations, and to decide the best approach to assume in the future.

Para-articular cysts frequently are seen on routine imaging examinations. They may be clinically asymptomatic or may cause pain, swelling, or impaired joint function. They often are associated with underlying joint disorders, such as trauma, degeneration, or inflammation. This article discusses the cause, symptoms, and appearance of para-articular cysts on various imaging examinations including arthrography, ultrasound, CT scan, and MR imaging. Specific attention is focused on those cystic masses appearing around the hip, knee, ankle and foot, shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, spine, temporoman

Venous adventitial cystic disease (VACD) is a rare vascular disorder characterized by mucin-filled cysts in the venous adventitia. We encountered five patients who presented to our vascular clinic with an initial diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) but were later diagnosed with VACD on imaging. The patients were aged 64-81 years; lesion locations included the common femoral vein (n=3), external iliac vein (n=1), and popliteal vein (n=1). Four patients underwent surgical intervention, and one patient received conservative management with medical therapy. All surgically treated patients demo

Imaging techniques have significantly impacted physicians' capability for diagnosis and differential diagnosis for decades. The aim of this review is to update our knowledge regarding the use of US in orthopedic pediatric patients for diagnostic purposes or procedural/therapeutic purposes. This review demonstrates the application of US in trauma (long bone fractures, radial neck fractures, etc.), developmental anomalies such as developmental dysplasia of the hip and congenital dislocation of the patella, soft tissue pathologies (ganglion cyst, popliteal cyst, hemangioma, lipoma, etc.), tumors,…

Acute calf pain can be due to a variety of causes. The identification of patients requiring screening for deep vein thrombosis can be achieved from the history and physical examination. For emergency department use, initially noninvasive assessment with ultrasound scanning can not only demonstrate thrombosis but also other lesions, including popliteal cysts and masses producing venous compression. This is a cost-effective strategy suitable for the assessment of the ambulatory patient. Some subgroups of patients with proven deep vein thrombosis may require further investigation for the predispo…

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features suggestive of knee osteoarthritis (OA) are associated with presence … [BMLs] including bone marrow cysts [range 0-20], Hoffa- or effusion-synovitis [absent/present], and popliteal cysts [absent/present]) were associated with knee-specific pain as reported on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire using a 0-100 scale (worst to best).
RESULTS: The differences in KOOS knee pain score for a knee with a …

CME Rheumatology 26: Rheumatological Cases Abstract. Special rheumatological cases are illustrated using various examples. On the one hand we present differential diagnoses and causes of a "Baker's cyst", on the other hand a case of involvement of the cervical spine in rheumatoid arthritis. Usually, the medical history and precise clinical examination will lead us in the right diagnostic direction. Further clarifications such as laboratory analyses or imaging procedures are used in a targeted manner, taking into account the clinic.

BACKGROUND: Baker's cysts are commonly encountered in pain management practices.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain if sclerotherapy treatment of a Baker's cyst could produce objectively verifiable MRI imaging changes.
DESIGN: Case report.
METHODS: A 52-year-old white male with a posterior horn of the medial meniscus tear and a large Baker's cyst who had failed conservative care and drainage was imaged before treatment with sclerosing. Three injections of 12.5% dextrose and anesthetic with sodium morrhuate were injected intraarticular into the right knee after drainage.
RESULTS: The Baker's cyst reso
