[Left behind populations, COVID-19 and risks of health inequities : a guide of the local social-health network (Vaud, Switzerland)].

Since the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Confederation has referred to « vulnerable populations » over the age of 65 and/or with co-morbidities as potentially at risk. This group should not overshadow other highly vulnerable populations such as forced migrants, people deprived of their liberty, and the homeless. In the context of the current pandemic, there is a risk of increasing inequities in care among these populations. In this practical article, we list the marginalized and disadvantaged left behind populations in the canton of Vaud and the issues of inequities in care in the con

Health beliefs of first-degree relatives of individuals with colorectal cancer and participation in health maintenance visits: a population-based survey.

The occurrence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in two or more close relatives by chance is relatively common, and a family history of CRC is recognized as a risk factor for CRC. The purpose of this study was to identify variables associated with participation of first-degree relatives (FDRs) of individuals diagnosed with CRC in health maintenance visits with healthcare providers. Data were collected from a survey mailed to patients (n = 1081) diagnosed with CRC under age 60 years who were identified by the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry. An enclosure was also included in the mailing for their FDRs. O

Non-binary gender, vulnerable populations and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: Data from the COVID-19 MEntal health inTernational for the general population (COMET-G) study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant mental health challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations, including non-binary gender individuals. The COMET international study aimed to investigate specific risk factors for clinical depression or distress during the pandemic, also in these special populations. METHODS: Chi-square tests were used for initial screening to select only those variables which would show an initial significance. Risk Ratios (RR) were calculated, and a Multiple Backward Stepwise Linear Regression Analysis (MBSLRA) was followed with those variables

Tinnitus and Its Association With Mental Health and Health-Related Quality of Life in an Older Population: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study.

This study investigated the relationship of tinnitus with mental health and health-related quality of life (QoL) in older people. Data source included 5,129 community-dwelling men and women ≥60 years old from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Tinnitus was categorized into three groups: normal, tolerable tinnitus, and annoying tinnitus. Mental health and health-related QoL were assessed according to three dimensions (depressive mood, psychological distress, and suicidal ideation) and five domains (impaired mobility, impaired self-care, impaired usual activities, pain/

Health care utilization among individuals who die by suicide as compared to the general population: a population-based register study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 700 000 people die every year by suicide. Health care consultation patterns the period before suicide could be one potential way to identify people at risk for suicide. Therefore, this study examines health care patterns up to one year prior to the suicide by age, sex and prior diagnoses and specifically investigates if and how this differs from the general population of Skåne, Sweden. METHODS: This cohort study includes all individuals, aged 15 and older, that died by suicide in Region Skåne, Sweden from 2004 to 2015 (n = 1653). The individuals were identified through t

Mental health hospitalisations of care-experienced and general-population children with chronic conditions: evidence from the Children's Health in Care in Scotland (CHiCS) study, a population-wide longitudinal study using administrative data.

BACKGROUND: Care experience and chronic physical conditions in children are associated with an increased risk of mental health (MH) problems. These issues can compound, leading to poorer prognosis for both MH and chronic conditions. Examining the relationship between care experience and mental ill-health, and exploring how chronic conditions may influence this, is crucial for informing policy and mitigating the burdens on children, families and healthcare systems. METHODS: Routine health and social care data were linked for 13,830 care-experienced children (CEC) and 649,771 general-population

Associations between female sexual distress, genitourinary diagnoses, and mental health in a sexual health clinic population: a single-center retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Female sexual distress is multifactorial, with barriers to care arising from limited research and sociocultural stigmas. While studies examine individual impacts of depression, anxiety, dyspareunia, and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) on distress, few explore comorbid intersections. This project evaluates how common psychiatric and genitourinary diagnoses are associated with female sexual distress. METHODS: A retrospective chart review with cross-sectional analytic component was conducted of 515 patients seen in a single clinic between January 2019 and July 2025. Data inc

Health characteristics and health behaviours in male former contact sports participants: comparison with general population controls in a Finnish cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Athletes who have a history of participation in contact sports appear to subsequently experience elevated rates of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia but have a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and selected cancers. We quantified the occurrence of little-examined cardiometabolic and mental health outcomes, plus associated lifestyle factors, in a group of former contact sports athletes and a general population sample. METHODS: In this cohort study, male former elite athletes active between 1920 and 1965 in soccer (N=303), boxing (N=281), and wrestling (N=318) were

Factors influencing mental health and oral health-related quality of life in population with recurrent aphthous stomatitis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent episodes-induced oral functional limitations exacerbate anxiety, depression, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) impairments in Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) patients. However, the specific factors driving these psychological and OHRQoL deteriorations remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to quantify psychological distress and OHRQoL impairments in RAS patients and to identify modifiable risk factors underlying these deteriorations to inform targeted interventions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed RAS patients via an online/

Health, well-being, and psychopathology in a clinical population: Structure and discriminant validity of Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF).

OBJECTIVE: The literature suggests a distinction between illness (negative health) and the ability to cope with challenges such as illness (positive health). The two continua model of mental health distinguishes psychiatric symptoms (illness) from well-being (positive health). Well-being consists of hedonic, eudaimonic, and social well-being, constituting one factor that is moderately correlated with psychopathology in the general population. In a mental health care population, we examined whether the three dimensions of well-being are distinguishable and whether well-being is also moderately

Defining and measuring population health quality of outpatient diabetes care in Israel: lessons from the quality indicators in community health program.

In Israel, as in other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries, performance measurement is a key public health strategy in monitoring and improving population health outcomes. The Israeli Quality Indicators in Community Healthcare (QICH) program has utilized electronic health records to monitor ambulatory care for the entire Israeli population since 2002. In 2006 the measures were updated to include laboratory values. They have been subsequently revised by stratifying by age, duration, adding medications, and changing frequency of testing for certain process measures. …

Racial and ethnic differences in health and health care: lessons from an inner-city patient population actively using heroin and cocaine.

This study describes differences in health care utilization and recorded diagnoses in a racially and ethnically diverse sample of 1175 out-of-treatment patients who screened positive for heroin and cocaine use during an outpatient visit to a drop-in clinic at an urban hospital. Blacks averaged more ED visits than Whites and higher average yearly ED charges than Hispanics (1,991 dollars vs. 1,603 dollars). Charges over two years totaled 6,111,660 dollars. Blacks were most likely to be diagnosed with injury, hypertension, cardiac disease, alcohol abuse/dependency, and sexually transmitted diseas
