Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces complex and evolving metabolic disturbances that are not fully captured by structural imaging. 2-deoxy2-(18F)fluoro-d-glucose ([18F]FDG) PET provides critical insight into these changes, demonstrating an initial hypermetabolic phase followed by chronic hypometabolism associated with injury severity and clinical outcomes. Repetitive TBI results in widespread metabolic dysfunction across key brain regions. While tau and amyloid PET imaging offer mechanistic insights, their clinical utility remains limited due to inconsistent findings. [18F]FDG PET currently

BACKGROUND: Headache is one of the most common post-concussion symptoms following pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). To better understand its impact on young individuals, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of headache in a German-speaking post-acute pediatric TBI sample and compare it with the general population. In addition, factors associated with the development of pediatric post-TBI headache are investigated to improve the understanding of this condition.
METHODS: A post-acute sample (3 months up to 10 years post-injury) comprising N = 463 children and adolescents aged 8 t

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can negatively impact patients' lives on many dimensions. Multiple instruments are available for evaluating TBI outcomes, but it is still unclear which instruments are the most sensitive for that purpose. This study examines the sensitivity of nine outcome instruments in terms of their ability to discriminate within and between specific patient groups, selected a priori as identified from the literature, at three different time points within a year after TBI (i.e., 3, 6, and 12 months post injury). The sensitivity of the instruments to sociodemographic (sex, age, e

BACKGROUND: A higher proportion of people in prison have a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) than the general population. However, little is known about potentially related persistent symptoms in this population.
AIMS: To compare symptom reporting in men with and without a history of TBI following admission to a correctional facility.
METHODS: All men transferred to the South Auckland Correctional Facility in New Zealand complete a lifetime TBI history and the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptom Questionnaire (RPQ) as part of their routine health screen. Data collected between June 2020

Mild traumatic brain injury is very common in Western societies, affecting approximately 1.8 million individuals in the USA. Even though between 30% and 90% of patients develop post-traumatic headache, post-traumatic headache remains a very controversial disorder. Particularly when it comes to chronic post-traumatic headache following mild closed head injury and headache attributed to whiplash injury. Some experts are disputing its existence as a genuine disorder. Indistinct disease classification, unresolved pathophysiological mechanism, and the role of accident-related legal issues further f

INTRODUCTION: The most common psychological and cognitive sequelae associated with deployments to Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) are mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). High rates of PTSD are often observed among Veterans with a history of mTBI, and persistent postconcussive symptoms commonly endorsed after mTBI are known to be associated with PTSD. Therefore, this study examined whether PTSD mediates relations between postconcussive symptoms and 2 indices of medical disease burden: 1) the number of disease

Traumatic brain injury causes significant morbidity in youth, and headache is the most common postconcussive symptom. No established guidelines exist for pediatric post-traumatic headache management. We aimed to characterize common clinical practices of child neurologists. Of 95 practitioners who completed our survey, most evaluate <50 pediatric concussion patients per year, and 38.9% of practitioners consistently use International Classification of Headache Disorders criteria to diagnose post-traumatic headache. Most recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as abortive therapy, though t

INTRODUCTION: The majority of children who sustain a concussion will recover quickly, but a significant minority will experience ongoing postconcussive symptoms, known as postconcussion syndrome (PCS). These symptoms include emotional, behavioural, cognitive and physical symptoms and can lead to considerable disability. The neurobiological underpinnings of PCS are poorly understood, limiting potential clinical interventions. As such, patients and families frequently re-present to clinical services, who are often ill equipped to address the multifactorial nature of PCS. This contributes to the

BACKGROUND: Post-concussion brain energy is important for recovery, and measuring energy markers with individual characteristics may clarify recovery mechanisms.
PURPOSE: To examine the association between magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS)-based brain energy measures (creatine concentration) with sex and patient-reported outcomes after concussion.
METHODS: We evaluated adolescents with a concussion ≤3 weeks post-injury. Participants underwent 3T short-echo single-voxel MRS using a 32-channel head coil. Point-resolved spectroscopy (TR = 2000 ms, TE = 30 ms, voxel size = 20 × 20 × 20 mm3,

OBJECTIVE: Acute sleep disturbances after sport-related concussions (SRC) may affect recovery. This study assessed how sleep symptoms impact time to return-to-learn (RTL), symptom resolution (SR), and return-to-play (RTP).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a regional sports concussion center (11/2017-04/2022) with adolescents presenting within 3 days of SRC. Participants were dichotomized based on the presence or absence of 'trouble falling asleep' per the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS). Mann-Whitney U tests compared outcomes, and multivariable regressions adjusted

INTRODUCTION: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has been termed the signature wound of active duty service members (ADSM) returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom with estimated incidence rates between 19.5% and 23%, respectively. Locally, mTBI accounted for 9% of all diagnoses at Fort Bragg, NC, between 2016 and 2022. Our study examines long-term effects of medications prescribed to reduce or prevent mTBI complications that may lead to postconcussive syndrome (PCS).

OBJECTIVE: Persistent post-concussion symptoms resulting from a mild traumatic brain injury that typically last longer than three months may stem from a complex interaction of neurological and psychological factors, particularly negative mental states. Negative mental states including pessimism and depression are associated with post-concussion phenomena may be highly pertinent to Asian societies. The objective of this study was to examine the respective influences of culture specific psychological factors in the presentation of post-concussion symptoms.

Individual differences in mindfulness may impact quality of life after concussion. In a cross-sectional analysis, the moderating effect of mindfulness was tested on the association between symptom severity and quality of life in adults with persisting postconcussion symptoms (N = 85). Mindfulness and symptom severity were independently associated with quality of life; however, mindfulness did not moderate this association. "Nonreactivity" was independently associated with quality of life; however, it was not a significant moderator. Taking a nonreactive stance, or allowing experiences to come

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: After a concussion diagnosis, the most important issue for patients and loved ones is how long it will take them to recover. The main objective of this study is to develop a prognostic model of concussion recovery. This model would benefit many patients worldwide, allowing for early treatment intervention.
METHODS: The Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) consortium study enrolled collegiate athletes from 30 sites (NCAA athletic departments and US Department of Defense service academies), 4 of which participated in the Advanced Research Core, which i

BACKGROUND: Concussions are common, particularly among young adults, and often are associated with persistent, debilitating, and hard-to-treat symptoms. Anxiety and concussion symptoms often amplify each other, and growing evidence indicates that anxiety plays a key role in symptoms persistence after concussion. Targeting anxiety early after concussion may be a promising means of helping prevent persistent concussion symptoms in this population. We developed the Toolkit for Optimal Recovery after Concussion (TOR-C), the first mind-body program tailored for young adults with a recent concussion
