Under analysis were 35 patients with terato-dermoid formations of the mediastinum. The symptoms and their diagnosis are described. The author came to a conclusion that terato-dermoid formations being usually localized in the anterior mediastinum close to the heart and large vessels often caused disorders in the functional state of the cardio-vascular system. Investigation of the phasic structure of the left ventricle activity in patients with terato-dermoid tumors of the mediastinum showed that these patients had a hypodynamic syndrome requiring corrigent therapy prior to operation.

Postoperative cystourethrography can be valuable in the diagnosis and management of urinary tract infection and other postprostatectomy complications. The authors have studied 50 patients and recommend voiding cystourethrography prior to endoscopic assessment of bladder outlet resistance. In addition, urinary infection may complicate a clear-cut obstructive lesion and present as a mixture of irritative and obstructive symptoms. In the absence of symptoms indicative of pathological processes in the region of clinically edentulous alveolar processes, primary radiographic examination is sometimes omitted. For this reason, the authors report the results from the evaluation of the radiographs of 2177 patients with clinically edentulous alveolar processes. 320 (14.7%) positive findings were obtained from 278 patients. The great number of positive findings justifies the demand for careful radiographic examination also in case of clinically edentulous alveolar processes prior to the planning of any stomatological treatment.

IMPORTANCE: In the US, nearly all medical devices progress to market under the 510(k) pathway, which uses previously authorized devices (predicates) to support new authorizations. Current regulations permit manufacturers to use devices subject to a Class I recall-the FDA's most serious designation indicating a high probability of adverse health consequences or death-as predicates for new devices. The consequences for patient safety are not known.
