Organizational and individual factors associated with breakdown of residential placements for people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities (IDs) whose behaviour challenges services are at increased risk of placement breakdown. Most previous research has tended to focus on the role of individual characteristics in predicting breakdown. A small number of studies have suggested that service variables may impact on intervention effectiveness and hence placement breakdown. METHOD: This study used a non-experimental group comparison design to investigate potential differences between two groups of residential homes, one of which had experienced placement breakdown, and one of which had

An European overview of genetic counselling supervision provision.

Genetic testing is becoming more commonplace in general and specialist health care, and should always be accompanied by genetic counselling, according to legislation in many European countries and recommendations by professional bodies. Personal and professional competence is necessary to provide safe and effective genetic counselling. Clinical and counselling supervision of genetics healthcare practitioners plays a key role in quality assurance, providing a safe environment not only for patients but for professionals too. Physiotherapists' accounts of fibromyalgia: role-uncertainty and professional shortcomings.

Assessment of dentists' knowledge levels and clinical approaches to the diagnosis and management of oroantral communications and oroantral fistulas following tooth extraction: a nationwide cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Oroantral communication (OAC) and its chronic form, oroantral fistula (OAF), are significant complications primarily associated with the extraction of maxillary posterior teeth. Delayed diagnosis or inadequate primary management often leads to persistent maxillary sinusitis and secondary morbidities. Despite their clinical relevance, there is a lack of evidence regarding the factors influencing dentists' diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic decision-making. This study provided a nationwide evaluation of dentists' objective knowledge, clinical approaches, and self-perceived competenc

The field of competence of the specialist in physical and rehabilitation medicine (PRM).

The Field of Competence (FOC) of specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) in Europe follows uniform basic principles described in the White Book of PRM in Europe. An agreed basis of the field of competence is the European Board curriculum for the PRM-specialist certification. However, due to national traditions, different health systems and other factors, PRM practice varies between regions and countries in Europe. Even within a country the professional practice of the individual doctor may vary because of the specific setting he or she is working in. For that reason this pape

Influence of caregiver singing and background music on posture, movement, and sensory awareness in dementia care.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Previous research suggested caregiver singing could influence persons with severe dementia to communicate with increased competence, to cease aggression, and to cease disruptive screaming, while at the same time they seemed to understand what was going on when being cared for during morning care sessions. The aim of this study was to illuminate the posture, body movements, and sensory awareness of patients with dementia during three types of morning care sessions with professional caregivers: (a) the usual morning care situation, (b) a caring session in which familiar backg

U.S. military officer participation in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Epidemic Intelligence Service (1951-2001).

The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) was created in 1951 to provide epidemiologists to investigate natural and intentional disease epidemics. From an initial class of 23 U.S. citizens, the program has evolved into a globally recognized, hands-on learning experience, accepting approximately 65 to 75 new officers each year. The first U.S. military epidemic intelligence service officer (EISO) was accepted into the program in 1994. Since that time, 12 such officers have completed, or have begun, EIS training. They have comprised 2.1% of all EISOs from 1994 to 2001 and 0.47% of all EISOs. This t

Stepping outside the clinic walls: health professionals' encounters with place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: While existing literature has largely examined healthcare delivery within hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study extends the inquiry to the spatial dimensions of public health work in urban settings. Entering an emotional minefield: professionals' experiences with facilitators to address abuse in child interviews.

BACKGROUND: Extensive research documents that child abuse is widespread and that it has detrimental effects on victims' physical, psychological and social well-being. Efforts to help abused children by removing stressors and administering restorative care can reverse these negative effects, but the evidence suggests that professionals often fail to expose child abuse. This study aims to generate insight into professionals' experiences with facilitators in handling the challenges of addressing abuse in child interviews. We expect that this knowledge can improve interventions that qualify profes

An education program which prepares nurses to teach breast self-examination.

The importance of competent and regular breast self-examination in the early detection and improved outcome of breast cancer cannot be emphasized enough. In their contacts with women, nurses are in an opportune position to promote BSE through education and demonstration. Breast self-examination is an area where many nurses are not comfortable. However, with planned and organized instruction, professional nurses can assume the role of teaching this important skill. Breast self-examination can then be incorporated into any clinical setting where professional nursing is practiced.
