INTRODUCTION: Presuming that psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease, the aim of this study was to establish its association with other autoimmune skin diseases. The material was obtained at the Dermatovenereological Clinic--Clinical Center Novi Sad.

Psoriasis vulgaris may be worsened or precipitated by numerous factors, including hormonal influences. Several lines of evidence suggest that female sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone affect this condition. We describe a patient whose psoriasis responded favorably to administration of the antiestrogen compound tamoxifen.

BACKGROUND: Newest studies have shown that psoriasis is not primarily a skin disorder but an immunological disturbance under the skin. The skin manifestations are a result of overstimulation of superficial skin cells (Langerhans cells) due to increased production of interleukin 2, 6 and 8 as well as transforming growth-factor-alpha. Interleucin-10 production is diminished. In a recent study (11 German University Skin Clinics) fumaric acid was shown to improve the skin leasons in 80% of treated patients.

A 36-year-old Japanese woman with pustular psoriasis associated with hypoparathyroidisum was reported. The patient showed hypocalcemia and was treated with calcium supplements and calcitriol. When the serum calcium level became normal, the pustules disappeared and erythroderma completely resolved. We have analyzed 8 patients (6 men and 2 women, aged 52 to 70 years) with psoriasis associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among 79 psoriatic patients. Psoriasis preceded in 6 cases. Recombinant human interferon-alpha has been used in the treatment of several cancers, but there have been several reports that it may exacerbate psoriasis or trigger off its onset. We report four patients, three of whom first developed psoriasis and one who had an aggravation of the condition during treatment with interferon-alpha. Circulating polymorphonuclear leukocyte (CPMN) functions were studied in patients with widespread psoriasis as well as in persons with chronic alcoholic liver disease (CALD), paracoccidioidomycosis, diverse granulomatous diseases, and normal individuals.
