Interdiscursivity and its historical shifts in China's public health risk communication letters: from SARS to the post-COVID-19 era.

Interdiscursivity refers to the blending of multiple discourses, genres, or styles within a single communicative event. This study investigates the interdiscursivity of Chinese public health risk communication letters issued during major health crises over the past two decades, including SARS, H1N1, COVID-19 and seasonal influenza. It examines how multiple discourse types-advice-giving, scientific, literary, authoritative, affective and informal-are interwoven and strategically adapted across different crises to guide public behaviour, mobilise communities and foster trust. Using qualitative d

Gonorrhea in China: shaping medical knowledge and transforming public perceptions.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been a persistent global challenge, with gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, remaining an enduring threat. Despite its clinical and social importance, the historical evolution of gonorrhea-related knowledge and public perceptions in China have received limited scholarly attention. This paper addresses this gap by analyzing two interconnected threads: first, the formulation of medical knowledge, encompassing Traditional Chinese Medicine's (TCM) understanding of linzheng () and Western medicine's definition of gonorrhea; second, t

Opioid-related deaths in Europe: Strategies for a comprehensive approach to address a major public health concern.

Use of illicit opioids and misuse of prescription opioids are the main causes of drug-related deaths across the world, and the continuing rise in opioid-related mortality, especially affecting North America, Australia and Europe, is a public health challenge. Strategies that may help to decrease the high levels of opioid-related mortality and morbidity and improve care across Europe include risk assessment and interventions to improve the use of opioid analgesics, e.g. prescription drug-monitoring programmes, education on pain management to reduce opioid prescribing, and the implementation of

Mumps Outbreaks at Four Universities - Indiana, 2016.

From February to April 2016, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) confirmed mumps outbreaks at four universities (three public and one private). All universities were located within 65 miles of Indianapolis; however, epidemiologic links among outbreaks were limited. ISDH and local health departments investigated the outbreaks and initiated control measures at all universities. A protocol describing recommended testing for mumps, testing priorities during the outbreak, and a preauthorization process for submitting specimens to the ISDH Laboratory (ISDHL) was developed and disseminated

Winning the battle against the scourge of poliomyelitis in the African Region.

INTRODUCTION: Recently we have recorded some progress against the transmission of poliovirus in the African Region. This is attributable to a number of factors, including commitment of global partnerships against polio, improvement of existing strategies as well as a number of innovations in response to the disease in the Region. METHODS: The WHO Regional Office in Africa documented these practices that led to the noticeable progress in the polio eradication initiative in the African Region, as lessons learnt and as part of polio legacy planning. The documentation exercise covered eight count

A One-Health integrated approach to control fascioliasis in the Cajamarca valley of Peru.

Fasciola hepatica infection is reported from many Latin American countries, with very high prevalence rates in both humans and livestock in the Andean countries. Due to its environmental characteristics, particularly suitable for liver fluke infection, the Cajamarca valley of Peru has often been chosen as a model to study the epidemiology of liver fluke infection in the Andes. In this paper we describe the profile of a project aimed at a multidisciplinary and integrated approach for the control of fascioliasis in animals and humans in this valley. The One-Health integrated approach applied her

"Spanish flu, or whatever it is...": The paradox of public health in a time of crisis.

Without the modern tools of surveillance, or the ability to develop a national vaccination campaign, local health departments were often on their own in preparing and combating the spread of the disease during the influenza epidemic of 1918. This article reviews the state of public health before the epidemic, seeking to place the reaction to the disease in the context of the evolution of public health. The epidemic struck at a critical time in the history of the nation and of public health, and we must explore not only the tools and technologies that were available to practitioners at the time

Cross-contamination of clinical specimens with Bacillus anthracis during a laboratory proficiency test--Idaho, 2006.

On July 18, 2006, the Utah Department of Health notified epidemiologists at the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare that Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent for anthrax, had been isolated from a patient. On the same day, the Idaho epidemiologists were notified by the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories of a specimen from a second patient received for anthrax testing. The two reports resulted briefly in alerts to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and precautionary treatment of one of the patients for anthrax. Subsequent investigation revealed that, during July 2006, the Idaho Bureau of

HCV and HIV counseling and testing integration in California: an innovative approach to increase HIV counseling and testing rates.

OBJECTIVES: In California, injection drug users (IDUs) comprise the second leading risk group for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and the majority of hepatitis C virus (HCV) cases. Innovative disease screening and prevention activities are needed to improve disease surveillance and to guide appropriate public health responses. This study tested the hypothesis that offering HIV counseling and testing (C&T) concurrently with HCV C&T will increase HIV C&T rates among IDUs. METHODS: From February through June 2003, HIV and HCV C&T were integrated in five California local health juris

Anticipating smallpox and monkeypox outbreaks: complications of the smallpox vaccine.

BACKGROUND: The recent outbreak in the Midwest of monkeypox, as well as the continued fears of a terrorist-induced epidemic of smallpox, prompted the authors' review of the literature regarding past and current experiences with smallpox vaccination. The smallpox vaccine, which is highly effective in preventing the spread of both these orthopoxvirus infectious illnesses, might be administered to numerous health care workers and, in the event of a smallpox attack, millions of other citizens. However, vaccinees would be at risk for several vaccine-related neurologic complications. REVIEW SUMMARY

Public health response to an incident of secondary chemical contamination at a beach in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: To gather enough data from a large scale investigation involving two health authorities, to assess the possible concentrations and routes of exposure and the consequent health implications. To use the data to decide whether a polluted beach should remain open to the public. In Spring 1997, a chemical incident came to light at a beach on the south coast of England when a local resident reported a sulphurous smell, visible signs of oil, and reduced numbers of fishing bait. The beach was situated adjacent to a former gasworks site and was accessible to the public. The incident was rep

Public trust and mistrust of COVID-19 vaccines: A systematic meta-narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Trust played a fundamental role in vaccine decision-making and uptake during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this study is to explore how public trust was conceptualized, operationalized, and implicated in vaccine uptake research on COVID-19 vaccines. METHODS: Using a systematic meta-narrative review, we searched literature around trust/distrust, science and COVID-19 vaccines. This involved identifying research areas, aims, methods, and sample sizes for each study while inductively/deductively exploring six narratives of trust - attitudinal, cognitive, affective, contingen
