A 24-year-old woman with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis was referred to our hospital for treatment of nephrotic syndrome. Though she experienced partial remission following treatment with prednisone and cyclosporine, she had a relapse of nephrotic syndrome when her prednisone was tapered off to 30 mg/day. A 70-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of extensive, progressive perianal erosions. In addition, he had white reticulate striae and small erosions on the penis. The clinical diagnosis of erosive lichen planus was confirmed histologically. After several topical approaches failed and his ss-blocker was stooped, 3 pulses of dexamethasone (100 mg dexamethasone i.v. on 3 consecutive days every 4 weeks) led to complete and long-lasting remission.

Pulse itraconazole is effective in the treatment of chromoblastomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi. Six patients, mean 62.3 years (range 45-79), mean duration 103 months (range 4 months to 30 years), were included in this study. F. pedrosoi was the only isolated organism. Four patients (66.7%) were cured by 12 months. Two patients (33.3%) failed to respond fully to treatment; however, one patient whose culture remained positive showed > 50% improvement at the end of study. Steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) in children is intractable, and the optimal treatment regimen is not known. We investigated the efficacy of methylprednisolone pulse therapy (MPT) in SRNS patients. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a pituitary mass, extending into the suprasellar cistern, with intense gadolinium enhancement. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether pulse oximetry can be used as a screening test to detect congenital heart disease (CHD) in otherwise well newborns before nursery discharge.
METHODS: Births at Lakeland Regional Medical Center (LRMC) who met inclusion criteria, had a single pulse oximeter reading before discharge. A normal reading was considered to be >94%.
