In this paper is reported a case of Q fever which followed a clinical course with a syndrome of self-limited fever. Being discussed are those clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the disease; and emphasizing finally that Q fever is not an infrequent clinical entity in our midst.

There were 858 (37.7 percent) Q fever-infected dairy herds among the 2,277 tested in Illinois in 1963. The percentage decreased to 19.2 percent (380 of 1,975) in 1967. Reaction rates (complement-fixation test titer of 1:8 or greater) in serum samples from veterinarians decreased from 13.3 percent in 1956 to 3.9 percent in 1964 and from 3.6 percent in 1966 to 0 percent in 1968, 1970, 1972. There were 14 (2.7 percent) reactive serum samples among 526 abattoir workers tested in 1966; reaction rates were higher among workers having contact with swine (8.2 percent) than among workers having contact…

The present paper reports on a Q fever outbreak of 149 cases in a municipal slaughter house focus. The diagnosis was established by clinical, epidemiological, radiologic and laboratory investigations. The route of transmission was air-borne from the sick animals (not detected at the veterinary control) to man. A closer cooperation is recommended between the human and veterinary health services, for early detection of the cases, their prevention and control. The authors suggest the need to immunize the personnel exposed to the risk of contamination (zoo technical units, slaughter house personne…

The sero-epidemiology of Q-fever was studied by capillary agglutination test at 25 poultry farms in the Nainital and Ajmer districts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Of 589 birds tested, 78 (13.24%) had Q-fever agglutinins (CAT titers 1:8 to 1:64), involving 16 of the farms. There were more sero-reactors in Ajmer (17.56%) than in Nainital (3.35%). The sero-positive reactors were respectively 19.74% and 5.55% among the age groups above and below 6 months. The breed difference and comparatively high infection rates in poultry attendants of a Q-fever-positive farm are discussed.
