This report documents retrospectively a case of Posterior Interosseous Neuropathy (PIN) occurring in an elite baseball pitcher experiencing a deep ache in the radial aspect of the forearm and altered sensation in the dorsum of the hand on the throwing arm during his pitching motion. The initial clinical goal was to control for inflammation to the nerve and muscle with active rest, microcurrent therapy, low-level laser therapy, and cessation of throwing. Minimizing mechanosensitivity at the common extensor region of the right elbow and PIN, was achieved by employing the use of myofascial releas

PURPOSE: To determine the cause of symptoms and efficacy of transcatheter therapy in a series of patients with dialysis grafts and hand pain referred for arteriography.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with 14 hemodialysis grafts underwent arteriography for possible hand ischemia. The sites of proximal graft anastomosis were the distal radial artery (n = 6) and the mid- to distal brachial artery (n = 6). Transcatheter therapy was performed via the graft or by antegrade brachical puncture.
RESULTS: The cause of symptoms was ischemia from obstructive arterial disease in seven cases (th

In brief: Nerve injuries in athletes may be serious and may delay or prevent an athlete's return to his or her sport. Over a two-year period, the authors evaluated the condition of 65 patients who had entrapments of a nerve or nerve root, documented with electromyography. They describe four case histories: Two patients had radial nerve entrapments, one caused by baseball pitching and the other by kayaking; one football player had combined suprascapular neuropathy and upper trunk brachial plexopathy; and one patient had carpal tunnel syndrome of a median nerve secondary to rowing. Sports-relate

AIMS: To define the neurological and neuropathological alterations caused by SYNE1 mutations.
METHODS: We describe 5 patients (3 males, 2 females; age 3-24 years) from 3 families. The diagnostic work-up included three muscle biopsies and two nerve biopsies in three of the cases.
RESULTS: Three different phenotypes were discerned. Two patients showed progressive ataxia, mental retardation, neuropathy and radially deviated thumbs (spinocerebellar ataxia, SCAR, type 8 phenotype). Two patients had mild congenital myopathy with restrictive lung disease, clubfeet and thumb anomalies (myopathic art

INTRODUCTION: Radial tunnel syndrome (RTS) remains an overlooked cause of chronic elbow pain. Clinical overlap with lateral epicondylitis, and the coexistence of other nerve entrapments contribute to diagnostic uncertainty. This study aimed to characterise the clinical presentation, and concomitant pain/nerve entrapment patterns following surgical decompression of posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) compression, and to explore the Neurogenic Elbow Disharmony Loop (NEDL) as a hypothesis-generating model for refractory elbow pain.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 157 operated arms in 143 patie

PURPOSE: The role of corticosteroid injection for radial tunnel syndrome (RTS) has not been studied in a placebo-controlled clinical trial. The present clinical trial aimed to evaluate the effect of local triamcinolone injection on pain intensity, upper-extremity disability, and elbow function of patients with RTS.
METHODS: Forty-nine patients clinically diagnosed with RTS were randomized into the intervention and placebo groups. The diagnosis of RTS was made based on the following criteria: activity-related pain, maximal tenderness 3 to 5 cm distal to the lateral epicondyle, pain that worsen

INTRODUCTION: Radial neck fracture is a less common injury in childhood and many factors are associated with the final functional outcomes. This study aimed to describe the clinical and radiological results of the patients with radial neck fractures treated surgically and assess the potential risk factors for poor functional outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study enrolled 101 children with radial neck fracture and treated surgically at our department. Patients were followed up at least three years and assessed clinically and radiographically. The primary outcome of this study was the func

BACKGROUND: This meta-analysis aimed to compare conservative vs. operative treatment for humeral shaft fractures in terms of the nonunion rate, reintervention rate, permanent radial nerve palsy rate, and functional outcomes. Secondarily, effect estimates from observational studies were compared with estimates of randomized clinical trials (RCTs).
METHODS: The PubMed/Medline, Embase, CENTRAL (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials), and CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) databases were searched for both RCTs and observational studies comparing conservativ

We here report 54 cases of humerus diaphyseal fractures treated via Hackethal's bundle nailing. We observed 3 cases of radial nerve palsy. Therapeutic abstention associated with monitoring was the applied attitude toward these patients on presentation to the Emergency Department. It resulted in recovery. Hackethal's bundle nailing technique is relatively easy but it requires rigorous surgical procedure performed by an experienced surgeon. A rate of 7.84% of pseudarthrosis is reported. Hackethal's bundle nailing is a very safe, improved orthopedic treatment with modest cost.

PURPOSE: Explosive injuries to the pediatric brachial plexus are exceedingly rare and as such are poorly characterized in the medical literature.
METHODS: Herein, we describe an 8-year-old who was struck in the neck by a piece of shrapnel and suffered multiple vascular injuries in addition to a suspected avulsion of the cervical 5 and 6 ventral rami. The patient had a complete upper brachial plexus palsy and failed to demonstrate any clinical improvement at 6-months follow-up. He was taken to the operating from for a partial ulnar to musculocutaneous nerve neurotization as well as a partial r

The nature of the B-cell subsets associated with chronic hepatitis C virus related type II mixed cryoglobulinemia (HCV-MC) is unclear. We report the case of a 64-year-male with acute onset wrist drop and foot drop, secondary to HCV-MC related mononeuritis multiplex, who was treated with rituximab, an anti-CD20(+) antibody directed against B cells. We monitored the frequency of B-cell subsets in peripheral blood before and after rituximab, and correlated B-cell subset changes with clinical response. Significant improvements in his wrist and foot drop, as well as his vasculitic rash, depression

INTRODUCTION: There are several evaluation schemes for the results of tendon transfers in case of radial nerve paralysis, and the most logical and commonly used are evaluation schemes that use the range of active joint movements to evaluate the results.
AIM: Present an original evaluation scheme for tendon transfer results based on functional wrist and fingers joint movements. The aim of the article is to present the advantages of our own Functional scheme in comparison with other schemes, its simplicity and applicability in the evaluation of all clinical cases of different postoperative outc

This study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of delayed surgical treatment in cases of persistent radial nerve paralysis after fractures of the middle third of the humerus. We have limited this study to patients who had absolutely no functional recovery of the radial nerve 3 to 4 months after middle third humeral fractures. The fractures were treated by a variety of orthopaedic methods, conservative and surgical, in other departments and hospitals. Surgical exploration of the radial nerve was carried out 3 to 4 months after primary orthopaedic treatment. The outcome of this study concur

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) are optic neuropathies that can both lead to irreversible blindness. Several studies have compared optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) findings in glaucoma and NAION in the presence of similar functional and structural damages with contradictory results. The goal of this study was to use a deep learning system to differentiate OCTA in glaucoma and NAION.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty eyes with glaucoma (including primary open angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, pigmentary

BACKGROUND: We describe a patient with tardy ulnar neuropathy and cubitus valgus deformity found to have an intracapsular ulnar nerve.
METHODS: An 89-year-old woman presented with severe neuropathic pain in the ulnar digits of the hand, advanced degenerative arthritis of the elbow, and tardy ulnar nerve palsy. Her pain was exacerbated with elbow movement, particularly flexion. She had paralysis of ulnar nerve innervated muscles, hypersensitivity with absence of two-point discrimination in her ulnar 1-1/2 digits, and a fixed ulnar claw deformity. She also had a grossly unstable elbow.

Nerve compression syndromes caused by non-neural tumours or tumour-like lesions are rare. We retrospectively reviewed 541 consecutive patients operated on by the same surgeon to study nerve compression syndromes in the forearm and hand. There were 414 due to nerve compression and 127 caused by tumours. Twenty-two patients showed compression neuropathy associated with 17 tumours and six tumour-like lesions, with 13 different pathological types. The most common types were fatty and vascular tumours. Twenty-one tumours were extraneural and one was intraneural. The median nerve was affected in nin
