PURPOSE: We evaluated the feasibility of a juxta-articular-type volar distal radius plate for the surgical treatment of marginal distal radius fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty marginal distal radius fractures, defined by the location of the fracture line within 10 mm of the joint line of the lunate fossa, were retrospectively reviewed between July 2020 and July 2022. The fractures were fixed using a juxta-articular-type volar plate (ARIX Wrist System). The characteristics of the implant and surgical technique, radiologic, and clinical outcomes, and related complications were evaluated…

Aim To evaluate the outcome of these complex fractures using a volar approach and the DePuy Synthes variable-angle 2.4-mm distal radius rim plate. This plate is precontoured to the volar rim for placement distal to the watershed line allowing purchase of the rim fragment of the lunate facet. Its low profile and smooth edges are designed to minimize flexor tendon irritation. Method We report on a consecutive series of far distal AO-23B3 and AO-23C3 fractures treated using this plate in a tertiary hand center between November 2011 and May 2014. Range of motion, grip strength, and complications w

We observed an unusual type of volar Barton fracture in the pediatric age and performed open reduction and internal fixation of the fragment, using the buttress plate in consecutive children. We report the radiological and clinical outcomes after follow-up for at least 3 years. From March 2008 to September 2014, nine consecutive children were treated by buttress plating. Their mean age at the time of injury was 13.1 years. All of the fractures were metaphyseal fractures in the coronal plane and typical Salter-Harris II fractures in the sagittal plane. After accurate reduction of the fragment,

In this case report, we present a 13-years-old patient who sustained a Monteggia equivalent fracture along with an ipsilateral distal radius fracture following a fall on the elbow. Comminuted ulnar fracture was treated with open reduction and internal fixation with a bridging plate. After restoring the ulnar length, the radial neck fracture was successfully reduced. The distal radius fracture was managed conservatively. Our literature review shows that, the patient is one of the comparatively older patients treated with open reduction and internal fixation in this area and that a successful ou

INTRODUCTION: Despite the prevalence of renal impairments, the existing literature examining fracture healing in the upper limb in patients with renal impairment is sparse. This study hence aims to investigate the effect of renal impairment on time to fracture healing after distal radius fracture fixation surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients above 50 years old who underwent distal radius fracture fixation via volar plating were included. Time to fracture healing was defined as duration between day of surgery and presence of radiographic union as evidence by bridging of callus or osseous b

BACKGROUND: Distal ulna head or neck fracture is commonly associated with distal radius fracture. Treatment of these fractures remains controversial. Plate osteosynthesis is commonly performed. The purpose of this study was to observe clinical and radiological outcomes in ulna hook plate osteosynthesis for distal ulna fracture associated with distal radius fracture.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study between 2010 and 2018 included patients presenting combined displaced distal ulna fracture and distal radius fracture who were treated with ulna hook plate osteosynthesis. Patient ev

BACKGROUND: Identifying and treating patients with fragility fractures may be effective in prevention of subsequent fractures because a first fragility fracture often predicts a second fracture.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate a multidisciplinary anti-osteoporotic clinic for patients with prior distal radius fragility fractures (DRFF). To assess whether addressing this early fracture may prevent a second fracture.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was performed. Cases included patients treated surgically for DRFF who were assessed at a tertiary, multidisciplinary, fracture-prevention clini

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are 16% of fractures treated by orthopedic surgeons. Obesity's influence on DRF complexity has not been studied. This study was undertaken to determine if body mass index (BMI) affects DRF pattern, treatment, and functional outcomes.
METHODS: Part 1 was a retrospective review of patients who sustained a DRF after a fall from standing height with no prior reduction or treatment. Radiographs were classified as "simple" or "complex." Part 2 consisted of contacting patients from Part 1 and obtaining a Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (Qui…

BACKGROUND: There are well-defined criteria for the treatment of distal radius fractures but the impact of an unrepaired fracture of the styloid process of the ulnar on recovery after operative treatment is uncertain. This study evaluated radiological and functional results after different operative treatment procedures of distal radius fractures in patients with an untreated fracture of the styloid process of the ulna and those without such a fracture.
METHODS: Out of 480 patients with operatively treated distal radius fractures 238 were examined at least 1 year after injury. The fracture of…

A total of 118 consecutive patients with a fracture of the distal radius were treated with a volar locking plate; 50 patients had no ulnar styloid fracture, 41 had a basal ulnar styloid fracture, and 27 had a fracture of the tip of the ulnar styloid. There were no significant differences in radiological and clinical results among the three groups. The outcome was good and was independent of the presence of a fracture of the ulnar styloid. A total of five patients (4.2%) had persistent ulnar-sided wrist pain at final follow-up. Nonunion of the ulnar styloid fracture did not necessarily lead to

Refracture of the radius through a pin site after the removal of pins and plaster or an external fixator for Colles fracture is rarely mentioned in the literature. We present the details of three such cases and review two others reported in the literature. Our aim is to alert orthopedists to the potential for this complication. Patients with superficial or deep pin tract infections appear to be at greater risk.

Pediatric forearm fractures, particularly involving the ulna and radius, are among the most common childhood injuries. However, the lack of standardized and openly available datasets has limited progress in artificial intelligence research and constrained clinical validation. To address this issue, we present the Pediatric Ulna and Radius Fractures (PediURF) dataset, a first-of-its-kind, publicly available collection of over 10,000 de-identified images. Each image is carefully annotated by expert radiologists and categorized into three clinically relevant types: proximal, midshaft, and distal …

Volar locking plate fixation enables early postoperative return to daily activities. However, from the patient's perspective, undergoing surgery can pose substantial challenges. In particular, the perioperative period is considered a time of high psychological stress. The central sensitization inventory (CSI) score is an assessment tool for psychosocial factors in pain. In the present study, the utility of CSI scores for assessing the psychosocial factors influencing patients' status before surgery for distal radius fracture (DRF) were evaluated. This study included 22 patients who underwent v

Osteoporosis is a common yet underdiagnosed condition that increases the risk of fractures, contributing to substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are some of the most common fractures associated with osteoporosis and often precede more severe fractures. Managing DRFs in patients with osteoporosis can be a challenge due to altered bone quality, which can affect healing and surgical fixation. This review examines both operative and nonoperative management strategies for DRFs in osteoporotic patients, emphasizing the importance of individualized tr…
