BACKGROUND: It is well recognised that there is a high prevalence of trauma-related disorders amongst people of refugee background. Integrative approaches that utilise complementary therapies in combination with conventional Western treatments including psychological therapy and pharmacotherapy are consistent with culturally responsive care.
AIM: To explore the evidence base for complementary therapies in the management of trauma-related disorders amongst refugees and summarise the evidence base for integrative approaches of relevance to the management of trauma-related disorders in this popu…

Background: Armed conflicts and persecution force millions of people to flee their countries, exposing them to severe pre-, peri-, and post-migration stressors that can negatively affect mental health. This study investigates the psychological experiences of Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees (SLTRs) involving boat journeys and the refugee lives that follow. Thirty participants from rehabilitation camps in Tamil Nadu, India, were interviewed. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze the responses. The two overarching themes were 'the motives and consequences of exile' and 'the complexities of refugee life.' The findings reveal that the participants experienced psychosomatic symptoms immediately upon arrival, reflecting the inner conflicts resulting from war trauma and boat crossings. They repo…

Drawing on public and organisational records, private correspondence, memoirs, and asylum documentation, this study seeks to explore responses in Britain to mental health problems among Polish refugees from the 1830 November Uprising, and their pathways into British lunatic asylums. After considering their military and refugee experience as a context for mental distress, the article examines ways in which family, community, and above all British and Polish officialdom reacted to mental illness. It suggests that attitudes of middle-class authority figures, initially interacting with mechanisms …

Socioeconomic status (SES) is shown to be associated with refugees' mental health, but few studies have considered that these associations may vary over time. This study aimed to examine the dynamic contributions of SES to refugees' mental health during resettlement. We used five waves of data from a cohort study in Australia; 2399 refugees completed the interview in Wave 1, and the remaining waves had 2009, 1894, 1929, and 1881 participants, respectively. SES, high risk of severe mental illness (HR-SMI), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were assessed in each wave. Weighted multilevel…

Palestinian adolescent refugees are at increased risk for behaviors that can lead to poor health outcomes, such as high-risk substance use. This research focuses on the prevalence of substance use and its relationship with depression among adolescent male refugees in Palestine's North-West Bank. A cross-sectional study was conducted in five of seven refugee camps to gather data using a proportional stratified sampling technique. A structured questionnaire-based interview was conducted to gather sociodemographic data, self-reported substance use, and depression scale information. Additionally, …

OBJECTIVES: Refugees seeking safety across international borders are often exposed to a wide breadth of psychosocially stressful experiences that may fracture existing sources of social support and impair the generation of new social relationships, with implications for their long-term health and resilience. Using data from recently settled refugees in two asylum centers in Serbia, we examined the associations between social support, mental health, and physiological markers.
METHODS: In this mixed-method study of refugees (age 18-50 years, n = 76), we collected key socio-demographic informati…

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly experienced by asylum seekers and refugees (ASR). Evidence supports the use of cognitive behavioural therapy-based treatments, but not in group format for this population. However, group-based treatments are frequently used as a first-line intervention in the UK.
AIMS: This study investigated the feasibility of delivering a group-based, manualised stabilisation course specifically developed for ASR. The second aim was to evaluate the use of routine outcome measures (ROMs) to capture psychological change in this population.
METHOD:…

Insufficient physical activity (PA) is the fourth prime risk factor for numerous non-communicable diseases. Arab immigrants and refugees (AIR) are at elevated risk for low or no participation in PA due to socio-cultural and ecological factors. This scoping review examined PA prevalence, knowledge, attitudes as well as barriers vs. facilitators to PA engagement across life domains among AIR in Western countries. A systematic search strategy was implemented across five automated databases (PubMed, Embase, Medline, Sociology Database and Transportation Research Board) to locate pertinent English …
