Magnetic resonance imaging of cardiac transplants: the evaluation of rejection of cardiac allografts with and without immunosuppression.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in vivo for the characterization of tissue changes associated with acute myocardial rejection after cardiac transplantation. Of 15 dogs that underwent heterotopic cardiac transplantation, six served as untreated controls, and nine received immunosuppressive therapy (25 mg/kg/day cyclosporine, 1 mg/kg/day prednisone). Serial electrocardiographically gated MRI (spin-echo technique) and histologic examinations of allograft biopsy samples were performed for each dog at 2 to 3, 7 to 10, 14 to 17, and 26 to 2

Functional evidence of nitrergic neurotransmission in the human urinary bladder neck.

Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in the non-adrenergic non-cholinergic (NANC) inhibitory neurotransmission of the lower urinary tract. However, functional evidence of this involvement in the human urinary bladder neck has not been consistently demonstrated. Therefore, the current study investigates the relaxations to endogenously released and/or exogenously added NO, in the human bladder neck. Urothelium-denuded bladder neck strips were dissected and mounted in isolated organ baths, containing a physiological saline solution (PSS) at 37 degrees C and continuously gassed with 5% CO(2) and 95% O(2)

Oxygen saturation during electroconvulsive therapy.

Oxygen saturation was measured during anaesthesia and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) using ear oximetry. Significant hypoxia occurred during some treatments; desaturation related to the number of ventilations performed after muscle relaxation and prior to the shock. Desaturation did not correlate significantly with seizure duration. These findings highlight the need for adequate oxygenation during ECT.

[Stress incontinence in the female--a urologic disease].

Several findings suggest, that other mechanisms than pelvic relaxation are involved in female stress urinary incontinence. Some aspects of diagnosis are given as well as basic principles in surgical treatment are discussed. The pathophysiology, methods of diagnosis and therapy indicate, that stress urinary incontinence is no longer a gynecological but an urological disease.

Relaxation Suppressed Exchange Tuning MRI Integrated with Manganese-Based Nanozyme Probes for Ferroptosis Induction and GPX4 Monitoring.

Ferroptosis has emerged as a viable approach to enhance therapeutic efficacy in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), making monitoring essential for prognostic evaluation. However, conventional MR imaging cannot characterize ferroptosis-related biomarkers. Herein, we propose a Relaxation Suppressed Exchange Tuning (ReSET) MRI strategy for ferroptosis modulation and monitoring, which relies on T1 relaxation and chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST). ReSET was achieved by a tumor-microenvironment-responsive nanoprobe (SiO2@FUDR@MnO2, SiFM), consisting of a mesoporous silica core loaded w

Anatomically-Guided Botulism Toxin Injections for Enhanced Abdominal Muscle Relaxation Prior to Massive Inguinal Hernia Repair: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The use of botulism toxin A (BTA) to augment abdominal muscle relaxation for surgical hernia repair is well described. However, guidance on the anatomic considerations to facilitate safe and ideal abdominal wall BTA injection patterns is limited. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old man presented with a 26-cm inguinal hernia and abdominal content loss of domain. Due to high risk of incomplete abdominal closure, abdominal compartment syndrome, and prolonged postoperative ventilatory support, a multidisciplinary approach to surgical closure was sought with therapeutic input from a comprehensi

Raloxifene relaxes rat cerebral arteries in vitro and inhibits L-type voltage-sensitive Ca2+ channels.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Because of their mixed estrogen-agonist and estrogen-antagonist properties, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) are considered promising substitutes for hormone replacement therapy. Raloxifene and other SERMs confer estrogen-like cardiovascular protective effects but lack the carcinogenic activity of exogenous estrogen. However, little is known about the cerebrovascular action of raloxifene. Therefore, we studied the effects of raloxifene on the mechanisms regulating rat cerebral artery tone. METHODS: Ring segments of the isolated rat posterior communicating

Therapeutic touch in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Alternative medical therapies are widely utilized, but there are few objective data to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques. The purpose of this study was to determine whether one alternative therapy, Therapeutic Touch (TT), can improve objective indices of median nerve function in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. METHODS: Participants with electrodiagnostically confirmed carpal tunnel syndrome were randomly assigned in single-blind fashion to receive either TT or sham therapeutic touch once weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. The distal latency of the median motor nerv

Focused review of interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation programs for chronic pain management.

Interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation programs (IPRPs) are based on a functional restoration approach to treating complex chronic pain conditions. With a greater appreciation for a biopsychosocial approach to more effectively manage patients with chronic pain has come the development of more comprehensive treatment programs with less of a biomedical emphasis (i.e., interventional therapy, unimodal physical therapy, and passive modalities) and more of a biopsychosocial one. Interdisciplinary programs involve the use of multiple disciplines such as physical and occupational therapy, pain psychol

[A pilot study on the long-term effects of combined drug therapy and psychophysiologically-oriented therapy in patients with severe essential hypertension].

15 patients with a severe degree of essential hypertension, which had not responded satisfactorily to pharmacological management, received an additional regimen of psychophysiological treatment. This schedule consisted of relaxation training, self-recording of the blood pressure by the patients and conversations geared at improving stress management. After 1 year 9 patients showed a lowered mean blood pressure from 162/106 mmHg to 141/95 mmHg (responders). 2 patients were excluded from the study and 4 patients failed to show any lowering of their blood pressure (non-responders). In 6 responder

[Anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important component in the treatment of depression and schizophrenia in Germany. For this intervention patients undergo short-term general anesthesia and muscle relaxation. Before anesthesia can be carried out patients are subject to a comprehensive examination. For general anesthesia all established hypnotics can be used, but differences with respect to the success of the ECT have been described. Short-acting or reversible relaxants should be preferentially used. The risks of general anesthesia during ECT are estimated to be low but a transient hemodynami

Reduction of hemifacial spasm and dysarthria following EMG biofeedback.

In this case study, a geriatric patient who had an 18-year history of hemifacial spasm was given EMG-biofeedback-assisted relaxation training. No formal speech therapy was provided. Our results confirmed two hypotheses: (a) The patient would learn to reduce frontalis EMG and facial spasm with and then without biofeedback, and (b) as a result, speech would be markedly improved. At both the 1-month and 15-month follow-up the patient retained the ability to relax his facial muscles with similar carry-over to speech. Possible neurophysiologic mechanisms of action mediating the feedback training ar

[Functional gastrointestinal disorders].

The functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are the most frequent clinical conditions seen in practice. The FGID are associated with significant work absenteeism, impaired quality of life and increased medical costs. Most patients also suffer from psychosocial problems. Therefore it is important to define the patient's complaints in terms of a biopsychosocial disorder rather than just a medical illness. Physicians must acknowledge the relevance of the psychosocial aspects to prepare the patient for a referral to a specialist (in psychosomatic medicine or a psychotherapist) and to get the
