A stable positioning for patients requiring large calvarial exposure for surgical correction of cranial synostosis.

We present a simple and elegant method of positioning the child's head for repair of craniosynostosis. The Sugita head holder allows large exposure of the calvarium with little risk of injury, dislocation or extensive blood loss caused by venous compression. We operated upon 37 patients (age range, between 3 and 132 months, median age 7 months) and did not observe any complication or lesion caused by positioning.

Vasopressin, immobilization, and the dexamethasone suppression test in rats.

To investigate the role of the hormone vasopressin (VP) in mediating the response of the body to stress, corticosterone levels of VP-containing (LE) rats and VP-deficient (DI) rats were compared following administration of the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) under stressed and nonstressed conditions. The stressor utilized was immobilization, an acute physical stressor. Dexamethasone (DEX), a synthetic glucocorticoid, was injected subcutaneously at a dose of 0.025 mg/kg. This dose of DEX was found to significantly suppress plasma corticosterone in the nonstressed animals (both DI and LE) v

Seasonal dependency of the effects of experimental stressors on tumor metastasis in mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma.

Increasing evidence indicates that the application of stressor paradigms in experimental animals affects tumor incidence and progression. However, a high heterogeneity appears both for the animal-tumor system used and for the characteristics of the stressor employed. A high variability was observed also with the application of rotational stress, a carefully and widely characterized mild psychological stressor, to mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma. The aim of this work has been therefore to examine the possible seasonal dependency of the effects of experimental stressors (rotational stress, for

Measurement of cardiovascular and renal function in unrestrained hamsters.

We describe a preparation for measuring blood pressure, left ventricular end diastolic pressure, heart rate, and renal excretory variables (volume, electrolytes, glomerular filtration rate) in hamsters. The new approach offers an advantage over previously described methods by eliminating the problems associated with restraint. Hamsters were surgically implanted with venous and arterial catheters. A specially constructed bladder catheter, which allows flushing to minimize errors due to dead space and permits urine collection without restraining the animals, was also implanted. The hamsters were

[The role of lipid peroxidation in the pathogenesis of periodontitis].

The authors analyze the role of the factors promoting a disruption of the physiologic antioxidant system, such as nervous stress, hypodynamia, bioantioxidant insufficiency, and inadequate pro-oxidant supply, to the development of peroxidation mechanisms of periodontitis initiation. The suggested concept implies that the general etiologic factors responsible for disruption of the physiologic system of lipid peroxidation inhibition create a background low-level antioxidant protection of the periodontal tissues. Under such conditions the local factors (dental deposit, plaques, microorganisms) con

Prevention of neurological deterioration before admission to a spinal cord injury unit.

Thirty-two of 123 patients admitted to the Victorian Spinal Injuries Unit, Austin Hospital, during the period 1st March 1983 to 28th December, 1984 sustained major neurological deterioration from the time of injury to the time the patient was admitted to the Unit. The key to the prevention of major neurological deterioration in patients who have only vertebral column damage and in patients who have partial neurological dysfunction is a theoretical and practical understanding of the spinal column and cord. Suspicion about the possibility of spinal cord injury, followed by appropriate handling a

Observations on the effects of vibration and noise on plasma ACTH and zinc levels, pregnancy and respiration rate in the guineapig.

The responses of female guineapigs to vibration and noise were examined with the use of an apparatus designed to simulate transport. Peak levels of plasma ACTH and zinc concentrations were attained after 4 min of exposure to vibration and 80-90 dB of noise. The respiration rate, normally around 90/min, was increased to 103/min when the animals were moved (while still in their cages) to the experimental area; it rose to 129/min when the apparatus was switched on to expose the animals to vibration and noise. Those left adjacent to the apparatus and exposed to noise alone elevated their respirati

The role of the catecholaminergic mechanism in foot shock (FS) stress- and immobilized-water immersion (IW) stress-induced analgesia in mice.

Involvement of the catecholaminergic mechanism in foot shock (FS)- and immobilized-water immersion (IW)-stress-induced analgesia (SIA) and in the development of tolerance to the effect were investigated in mice. With daily treatment with clonidine or daily exposure to stresses, tolerance developed rapidly to the analgesic effect. Clonidine-induced analgesia, which could not be antagonized by naloxone, was potentiated in the animals rendered tolerant to FS-stress, and it was attenuated in the animals tolerant to IW-SIA. On the other hand, animals tolerant to clonidine failed to show the attenua

Safer Behind Bars? Comparing In-Custody Deaths Prior to and During Incarceration.

INTRODUCTION: This project aims to characterize trauma-associated deaths of the American incarcerated population through legal intervention (LI) or death by law enforcement officials while in custody before and during incarceration. We determined the preceding events leading to violent death, including initiation of medical care, use of restraints and force, and demographics of the victims. METHODS: We used National Violent Death Reporting System data from the years 2003-2019 to identify deaths that occurred while in custody or incarcerated, including discriminate and narrative data. Event in

Hostage hallucinations. Visual imagery induced by isolation and life-threatening stress.

The literature on hallucinatory experiences of hostage victims is reviewed. The phenomenology is examined in 30 case studies involving 31 persons, including ex-prisoners of war and victims of rape, kidnapping, terrorism, robbery, and "UFO abductions." The victims were subjected to conditions of isolation, visual deprivation, restraint on physical movement, physical abuse, and the threat of death. For eight victims, these conditions were sufficient to produce a progression of visual hallucinations from simple geometric images to complex memory images coupled with dissociation. The other 23 vict

Dysregulation of Oral Microbial Eicosapentaenoic Acid Induced by Chronic Restraint Stress Exacerbates Periodontitis via M1 Macrophage Polarization.

The intricate interplay between chronic psychological stress and periodontitis, mediated by oral microbiota and macrophage polarization, remains largely enigmatic. Here, we demonstrate that chronic restraint stress (CRS) exacerbates periodontitis by inducing oral microbial dysbiosis and a consequential shift in host metabolism. Clinical observations reveal a significant correlation between depressive symptoms and the severity of periodontitis, which is underpinned by a distinct oral microbiome. Crucially, fecal microbiota transplantation from CRS-exposed mice into germ-free mice was sufficient

Bacillus safensis NMCC-189 attenuates chronic restraint stress-induced depressive phenotypes and modulates neurochemical and gene expression changes in mice.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis has been associated with depression, and probiotics are considered potential modulators of stress-related neurobiological processes. This study compared the effects of Bacillus safensis NMCC-189, administered alone or in combination with fluoxetine, in a murine model of chronic restraint stress. The animals were euthanised at predetermined intervals (days 7, 14, and 21; n = 5 per group) for biochemical, and molecular analyses after undergoing behavioural assessments for 21 days. Restraint stress significantly increased immobility time in the tail suspension test (

Fatal outcomes during prone restraint in police interventions: a multidisciplinary forensic and legal analysis from the Czech Republic.

BACKGROUND: Deaths occurring during or shortly after police restraint pose a major forensic and legal challenge. Prone restraint with torso compression has been associated with fatal outcomes, yet underlying mechanisms and their legal interpretation remain unclear. Evidence is predominantly derived from North America and Western Europe, with limited systematic data from other regions. METHODS: We conducted a multidisciplinary case series of prone restraint-related fatal and near-fatal police interventions documented in the Czech Republic between 2012 and 2023. Ten cases were identified using

The potential for Safewards to reduce restrictive interventions for people arriving to the emergency Department with police for a mental health assessment.

UNLABELLED: Safewards is a complex intervention developed to promote a therapeutic response to minimise conflict and containment in inpatient mental health settings. A pilot study was conducted to adapt Safewards for the emergency department (ED) setting to evaluate its impact on the use of restrictive interventions. This subgroup analysis focusses on patients transported to the ED by police for mental health assessment. METHOD: A retrospective file audit was conducted using pre and post measures on the use of restrictive interventions following the implementation of Safewards. Demographic an

Locus coeruleus activation contributes to masseter muscle overactivity induced by chronic restraint stress in mice.

It is commonly accepted that exposure to stress may cause overactivity in the orofacial muscles, leading to consistent muscle pain, which is the main symptom of temporomandibular disorders. The central neural mechanism underlying this process, however, remains unclear. The locus coeruleus is considered to play an important role in stress-related behavioral changes. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the role of locus coeruleus neurons in masseter overactivity induced by stress. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to chronic restraint stress for 14 days to establish an animal model. T

Restraint physiology: A review of the literature.

Law-enforcement often uses forensic restraints to control individuals and often these individuals are placed in positions and with various amounts of weight used to hold them in place. There has been a moderate amount of research performed on humans in this field of study to assess the physiologic impact of the positions and weight on ventilatory and cardiovascular parameters. This review discusses the scientific medical literature on the use of restraints and restraint position including the use of weight force and aggregates the findings in specific physiologic areas, such as impact on blood
