Clinical and dermoscopic patterns of melanocytic nevi in Hispanic adolescents: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Melanocytic nevi are well-known, important precursors of melanoma among children and adults. The adolescence period is an important period for nevi formation and evolution. This study provides data of a longitudinal study of nevi in a Hispanic adolescent population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey and 1-year prospective follow-up study was performed on Hispanic students from grades 6 and 7 at a school in Caguas, Puerto Rico (n = 90). The survey was completed by the students and one of their parents. The backs of the children were clinically examined for melanocytic

Perinuclear biogenesis of mutant torsin-A inclusions in cultured cells infected with tetracycline-regulated herpes simplex virus type 1 amplicon vectors.

TorsinA is a novel protein identified in the search for mutations underlying the human neurologic movement disorder, early onset torsion dystonia. Relatively little is understood about the normal function of torsinA or the physiological effects of the codon deletion associated with most cases of disease. Overexpression of wild-type torsinA in cultured cells by DNA transfection results in a reticular distribution of immunoreactive protein that co-localizes with endoplasmic reticulum resident chaperones, while the dystonia-related mutant form accumulates within concentric membrane whorls and nuc

Gastric distension modulates hypothalamic neurons via a sympathetic afferent path through the mesencephalic periaqueductal gray.

The effects of gastric distension on extracellularly recorded single neuronal activity in the lateral hypothalamuslateral preoptic area-medial forebrain bundle (LPA-LH-MFB), other areas of the hypothalamus, mesencephalic periaqueductal gray (PAG), and other areas associated with the mesencephalic reticular formation were determined in the anesthetized rat. Gastric distension was produced by filling a gastric balloon with water using a calibrated infusion pump. Experimental conditions were based on previous studies that simulated gastric distension during fluid consumption in the rat. The effec…

Mapping of neural pathways that influence diaphragm activity and project to the lumbar spinal cord in cats.

During breathing, the diaphragm and abdominal muscles contract out of phase. However, during other behaviors (including vomiting, postural adjustments, and locomotion) simultaneous contractions are required of the diaphragm and other muscle groups including abdominal muscles. Recent studies in cats using transneuronal tracing techniques showed that in addition to neurons in the respiratory groups, cells in the inferior and lateral vestibular nuclei (VN) and medial pontomedullary reticular formation (MRF) influence diaphragm activity. The goal of the present study was to determine whether neuro…

Startle and its disorders.

Exaggerated startle is an uncommon feature of various neurological diseases, but is still lacking precise analysis in many of them. So far, electrophysiologic and cinematographic analyses allow discriminating two main subtypes. The prototype of primary exaggerated startle is hereditary hyperekplexia, a well-studied disorder of the inhibitory glycine receptor and thus of the neuronal Cl- channel. The involuntary jerking in hereditary hyperekplexia is considered a reticular reflex myoclonus. The prototype of primary normal startle with secondary abnormalities is startle epilepsy where a surprise

Role of apamin-sensitive k(ca) channels for reticulospinal synaptic transmission to motoneuron and for the afterhyperpolarization.

Single motoneurons and pairs of a presynaptic reticulospinal axon and a postsynaptic motoneuron were recorded in the isolated lamprey spinal cord, to investigate the role of calcium-dependent K(+) channels (K(Ca)) during the afterhyperpolarization following the action potential (AHP), and glutamatergic synaptic transmission on the dendritic level. The AHP consists of a fast phase due to transient K(+) channels (fAHP) and a slower phase lasting 100-200 ms (sAHP), being the main determinant of spike frequency regulation. We now present evidence that the sAHP has two components. The larger part,

Brainstem influences on biceps reflex activity and muscle tone in the anaesthetized rat.

This study analyzes the effect of electrical stimulation of the locus coeruleus (LC) and adjacent brainstem structures on the tonic reflex (TVR), the tonic stretch reflex (TSR) and on muscle tone (MT) in anaesthetized rat. Increases in TVR, TSR and MT of the m. biceps were evoked from regions rostrally and ventrally of LC, the caudal pontine reticular nucleus, the cuneiform nucleus and from the ventral parts of the colliculus inferior. Stimulation of the LC did not influence biceps EMG activity. The results indicate that the observed facilitation of muscle activity is due to stimulation of par

Pharmacology of the brachium conjunctivum: red nucleus synaptic system in the baboon.

Acetylcholine, biogenic amines, and certain amino acids were applied by microiontophoresis to parvicellular and magnocellular red nucleus (RN) neurons of baboon while recording brachium conjunctivum (BC)-evoked and amino acid-evoked unit discharge from these neurons. Glycine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and beta-alanine were potent depressants of BC-RN synaptic transmission, amino acid-evoked firing, and spontaneous activity of all RN neurons studied. Glycine was clearly more potent than the other 2 depressant amino acids. L-Glutamic and DL-homocysteic acid were strong excitants of all RN neurons

An autopsy case of diffuse atypical argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) with presenile onset and three-year course of motor and cognitive impairment.

We report a case of argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) with unique clinical and pathological presentations. A 52-year-old man presented with spastic quadriparesis, bulbar palsy, and mild cognitive decline. His condition deteriorated rapidly and he died of pneumonia three years from onset. Pathologically, neuronal degeneration was involved severely in the amygdala, ambient gyrus, midbrain tegmentum, and reticular formation. The neurons of the temporal lobe, cingulate gyrus, brainstem, and spinal gray matter were also lost moderately. There was diffuse 4-repeat tau-pathology with argyrophilic grai…

Fentanyl produces cholinergically-mediated analeptic and EEG arousal effects in rats.

Fentanyl (20 micrograms/kg i.p.), administered to naltrexone-pretreated, pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, produced a shortening of the duration of narcosis. This analeptic effect was blocked by atropine, but not by methylatropine, indicating that a central cholinergic mechanism was involved. Fentanyl also increased sodium-dependent high affinity uptake of choline activity in the hippocampus and cortex that had been depressed by the barbiturate. Injection of 0.8 ng of fentanyl into the pontis oralis in the pontine reticular formation also produced analepsis in naltrexone-pretreated, pentobarbit…

Abnormal ocular motility with brainstem and cerebellar disorders.

The disorders of ocular motility seen in association with brainstem or cerebellar disorders may point to rather specific anatomical or pathological correlations. Pontine gaze palsy reflects involvement of the pontine paramedian reticular formation. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia signifies a lesion in the medial longitudinal fasciculus. Skew deviation may result from a lesion anywhere in the posterior fossa. Ocular bobbing typically results from a pontine lesion. The Sylvian aqueduct syndrome is characteristic of involvement in the upper midbrain-pretectal region, usually a pinealoma. Cerebellar …

Mechanisms of Alzheimer's Disease Pathogenesis and Prevention: The Brain, Neural Pathology, N-methyl-D-aspartate Receptors, Tau Protein and Other Risk Factors.

The characteristic features of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are the appearance of extracellular amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the intracellular environment, neuronal death and the loss of synapses, all of which contribute to cognitive decline in a progressive manner. A number of hypotheses have been advanced to explain AD. Abnormal tau phosphorylation may contribute to the formation of abnormal neurofibrillary structures. Many different structures are susceptible to AD, including the reticular formation, the nuclei in the brain stem (e.g., raphe nucleus), thalamus, hypot…

Programming local confinements in crystalline frameworks through reticular chemistry.

Controlling local chemical environments within porous crystalline materials is essential for selective adsorption and catalysis, yet remains difficult in stable frameworks with precisely oriented functional sites. Here we use reticular chemistry to programme tunable confinement in triazolate metal-organic frameworks constructed from Kuratowski-type Zn5Cl4 nodes. Linker geometry directs the formation of the ith-d topology, in which terminal Zn-bound groups point inwards to generate confined and chemically addressable pores. This strategy yields two isoreticular frameworks, NU-6000 and NU-6001,

Can Entropically Unfavorable Topological Hydrogen-Bonded Networks Form From Tetrakis- or Pentakis(4-Carboxyphenyl)benzene Derivative?

Control of network topology is one of the most important issues in reticular chemistry. Herein, we report the network structures of the missing pieces of carboxyphenylbenzene (CPB) derivatives, the simplest series of building blocks for hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), and elucidate their network topology in a crystalline state. 1,2,3,5-Tetrakis- and 1,2,3,4,5-pentakisCPBs (1235CPB and 12345CPB) form H-bonded networks with sql- and cem-topologies, respectively. Furthermore, it is remarkable that 1235CPB forms a more complicated cqe-topological network structure with three kinds of vo

Role of osteoclasts in regulating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.

Bone marrow (BM) cavities are utilized for hematopoiesis and to maintain hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). HSCs have the ability to self-renew as well as to differentiate into multiple different hematopoietic lineage cells. HSCs produce their daughter cells throughout the lifespan of individuals and thus, maintaining HSCs is crucial for individual life. BM cavities provide a specialized microenvironment termed "niche" to support HSCs. Niches are composed of various types of cells such as osteoblasts, endothelial cells and reticular cells. Osteoclasts are unique cells which resorb bones and are

Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Participate in Cardiovascular Diseases: Recent Experimental and Clinical Insights.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have recently emerged as a newly recognized contributor to venous and arterial thrombosis. These strands of DNA extruded by activated or dying neutrophils, decorated with various protein mediators, become solid-state reactors that can localize at the critical interface of blood with the intimal surface of diseased arteries and propagate and amplify the regional injury. NETs thus furnish a previously unsuspected link between inflammation, innate immunity, thrombosis, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular diseases. In response to disease-relevant stimuli, neu

[Acute respiratory arrest associated with medullary lesion in a case of multiple sclerosis].

We present a case history of a patient with multiple sclerosis who developed an abrupt onset of respiratory arrest associated with medullary … medullary lesions without upper cervical lesions. Pyramidal tracts, medial lemnisci, and paramedian reticular formations in medulla were damaged bilaterally. We supposed that the medullary lesions involved dual respiratory systems: a voluntary system and an automatic system, and caused acute respiratory arrest.
