OBJECTIVE: To explore the applications of imaging examination on rib fracture sites in forensic identification.
METHODS: Features including the sites, numbers of the processed imaging examination and the first radiological technology at diagnosis in 56 cases of rib fractures from 163 injuries were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: The detection rate of the rib fractures within 14 days was 65.6%. The initial detection rate of anterior rib fracture proceeded by X-ray was 76.2%, then 90.5% detected at a second time X-ray, while the detection rate of CT was 66.7% and 80.0%, respectively. The in

Microtia represents a spectrum of maldevelopment of the external ear. Reconstructive techniques may utilize an autogenous rib cartilage framework and require 2-4 stages; alternatively, an alloplastic framework can be used and typically requires 1-2 stages. Successful reconstruction of microtia with either technique can provide a significant quality of life improvement, and both techniques are described in this article.

Malignant degeneration in fibrous dysplasia is a rare occurrence. Most cases are reported in polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with predisposition of the femur, tibia, maxilla, and mandible. The most commonly observed malignant tumors are osteosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, and chondrosarcoma. We describe a case of a low-grade osteosarcoma occurring in polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of the rib cage in a 50-year-old man.

Cryptococcal osteomyelitis is extremely rare and almost always occurs in immunocompromised patients. We describe a case of osteomyelitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans involving both scapula and rib in an immunocompetent and previously healthy patient. Fibrous dysplasia is a noninherited bone disease in which abnormal differentiation of osteoblasts leads to replacement of normal marrow and cancellous bone by immature bone with fibrous stroma. Radiographic confirmation of rib fracture is often clinically irrelevant in patients who appear to have no complications or associated injuries. However, it is essential in a number of cases, especially when the clinical presentation and history raise suspicion of complications such as organ damage, or if the patient has other risk factors or conditions for which the precise information would help in management decisions. Short rib-polydactyly syndrome (SRPS) is a group of rare, lethal skeletal dysplasias characterized by short ribs and limbs, polydactyly, hypoplastic thorax and visceral anomalies. Cervical rib is a congenital phenomenon that usually occurs in association with upper-limb neurovascular symptoms. The presence of a cervical rib displaces the great vessels that cross the thoracic outlet superiorly and proceed into the neck. We report an unusual case of iatrogenic hemorrhage during a tracheostomy in a patient whose right subclavian artery had been displaced by a cervical rib. Our aim is to alert surgeons to the hidden risks of this phenomenon.
