Fighting the Smoking Epidemic in Syria: First Online Course to Equip Health Professionals with Smoking Cessation Competencies.

BACKGROUND: The prolonged conflict in Syria has increased psychosocial stress and contributed to high smoking rates. Despite healthcare providers' critical role in smoking cessation, medical curricula lack adequate coverage of related competencies, and high physician smoking rates remain major barriers. This study evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of the Smoking Cessation Strategy Course (SCSC), an online course aimed at enhancing Syrian healthcare professionals' knowledge, perceived skills, and attitudes toward smoking cessation. METHODS: This single-arm intervention involved a pee

The Impact of Non-Criterion A Traumas in Intimate Relationships on Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

Currently, the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder necessitates exposure to a traumatic event as defined by DSM-5-TR Criterion A. Nevertheless, evidence suggests that experiences not meeting Criterion A stressor definitions, specifically related to intimate relationships (e.g., psychological abuse) can also elicit clinically significant posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, the literature examining the unique role of non-Criterion A intimate relationship stressors on PTSS is sparse. This systematic review synthesized the literature examining the influence of non-Criterion A int

Effects of Cerebellar tDCS on Inhibitory Control: Evidence from a Go/NoGo Task.

Response inhibition as an executive function refers to the ability to suppress inappropriate but prepotent responses. Several brain regions have been implicated in the process underlying inhibitory control, including the cerebellum. The aim of the present study was to explore the role of the cerebellum in executive functioning, particularly in response inhibition. For this purpose, we transitorily inhibited cerebellar activity by means of cathodal tDCS and studied the effects of this inhibition on ERP components elicited during a Go/NoGo task in healthy subjects. Sixteen healthy subjects under

Male intimate partner violence: Examining the roles of childhood trauma, PTSD symptoms, and dominance.

One approach to understanding perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) by men focuses upon their childhood exposure to abuse or neglect as traumatic experiences, which may lead to PTSD symptoms; these symptoms can serve as risk factors for IPV perpetration. Another approach looks at the societal aspects of inequality between men and women as promoting male dominance over women and leading to IPV. The aim of the current study was to incorporate elements of each approach based on social learning theory through examining the role of dominance as a mediator between early childhood trauma, P

N2b Reflects the Cognitive Changes in Executive Functioning After Concussion: A Scoping Review.

Objectives: The N2b is an event-related potential (ERP) component thought to index higher-order executive function. While the impact of concussion on executive functioning is frequently discussed in the literature, limited research has been done on the role of N2b in evaluating executive functioning in patients with concussion. The aims of this review are to consolidate an understanding of the cognitive functions reflected by the N2b and to account for discrepancies in literature findings regarding the N2b and concussion. Methods: A scoping review was conducted on studies that used the N2b to

Implications of interparental conflict for adolescents' peer relationships: A longitudinal pathway through threat appraisals and social anxiety symptoms.

The goal of this study was to broaden the developmental understanding of the implications of interparental conflict (IPC) and threat appraisals of conflict for adolescents' relationships with peers. Guided by the cognitive contextual framework and evolutionary perspectives, we evaluated a developmental model in which adolescents who are exposed to IPC perceive these conflicts as threatening to their well-being or that of their family. In turn, threat appraisals of IPC increase risk that adolescents experience worries and fears about the peer context (i.e., social anxiety), leading to decreased

Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a sudden, severe, brief, stabbing, and recurrent pain within one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve. Type 1 as intermittent and Type 2 as constant pain represent distinct clinical, pathological, and prognostic entities. Although multiple mechanism involving peripheral pathologies at root (compression or traction), and dysfunctions of brain stem, basal ganglion, and cortical pain modulatory mechanisms could have role, neurovascular conflict is the most accepted theory. Diagnosis is essentially clinically; magnetic resonance imaging is useful to rule out second

Attachment insecurity, biased perceptions of romantic partners' negative emotions, and hostile relationship behavior.

In the current research, we tested the extent to which attachment insecurity produces inaccurate and biased perceptions of intimate partners' emotions and whether more negative perceptions of partners' emotions elicit the damaging behavior often associated with attachment insecurity. Perceptions of partners' emotions as well as partners' actual emotions were assessed multiple times in couples' conflict discussions (Study 1) and daily during a 3-week period in 2 independent samples (Study 2). Using partners' reports of their own emotional experiences as the accuracy benchmark, we simultaneously

Shooting darts: co-evolution and counter-adaptation in hermaphroditic snails.

BACKGROUND: Evolutionary conflicts of interest between the sexes often lead to co-evolutionary arms races consisting of repeated arisal of traits advantageous for one sex but harmful to the other sex, and counter-adaptations by the latter. In hermaphrodites, these antagonistic interactions are at least an equally important driving force. Here, we investigate the evolution of one of the most striking examples of sexual conflict in hermaphrodites, the so-called shooting of love-darts in land snails. Stabbing this calcareous dart through the partner's skin ultimately increases paternity. This tra

Targeting sweet taste receptor T1R2/T1R3: a new strategy for metabolic disease regulation and intervention of multiple organ diseases.

The overconsumption of dietary sugars poses significant health risks, creating a conflict with the innate human preference for sweet taste. Beyond its role in taste perception on the tongue, the sweet taste receptor (STR, a heterodimer of T1R2/T1R3) serves as a crucial nutrient sensor in metabolic organs, including the gut and pancreas. Dysfunction of this receptor is linked to impaired metabolic regulation. This review comprehensively summarizes the structure and signaling pathways of T1R2/T1R3, with a particular focus on its interaction with various food-source sweet ligands, including natur

Fundamentals of Shared Decision-Making in Surgery.

Shared decision-making (SDM) is a cornerstone of patient-centered care, particularly in colorectal surgery where treatment decisions often involve complex tradeoffs. This review outlines the principles, benefits, and challenges of SDM in surgical contexts, emphasizing its role in aligning clinical decisions with patient values. SDM enhances patient knowledge, reduces decisional conflict and regret, and improves satisfaction and adherence. It also offers systemic benefits, including reduced preference-sensitive surgeries and potential cost savings. Despite its promise, barriers such as limited

The role of adipokines in the pathogenesis and course of selected respiratory diseases.

Adipose tissue is also a secretory organ producing active substances called adipokines. Some of them (apelin, resistin, adiponectin, leptin, chemerin, or visfatin) may play a role in the pathogenesis and course of respiratory diseases, e.g. COPD, asthma, pulmonary hypertension, or lung cancer. There are limited and conflicting data on the role of adipokines in asthma. It has been confirmed, however, that visfatin and leptin can be markers of inflammation in COPD. Elevated concentrations of leptin and resistin play a pro-inflammatory role in the development of cancer cachexia. The role of adipo

Confronted with the real world: how final-year medical students experience interprofessional collaboration in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) is increasingly embedded in undergraduate medical curricula, yet little is known about how students encounter interprofessional collaboration (IPC) in real-world clinical practice. METHODS: This longitudinal qualitative study analyzed written diaries from eight final-year medical students at one institution (blinded) to explore IPC experiences during clerkships without formal IPE. Deductive coding used an interprofessional learning framework with four domains: "Roles, Hierarchy, and Power Dynamics," "Team Inclusion, Collaboration, and Silos," "Com

[Psychological aspects of ulcerative rectocolitis (author's transl)].

Ulcerative rectocolitis has been known for quite some time as a psychosomatic disease, it is an organic disease occurring in people with a particular personality rendering them susceptible to certain conflicts or stress which would be able to play a causing role in the appearance or exacerbations of the disease. Insofar as the psychological study is concerned, there are two important points to keep in mind: the role of psychological trauma as a stimulating factor and the basic personality. In 90% of the cases observed, psychological factors are found as provoking the hemorrage, as found by Gro

Potential Role of Glutathione Antioxidant Pathways in the Pathophysiology and Adjunct Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders.

Oxidative stress is defined as the imbalance between the production of free radicals and their removal by antioxidants, leading to accumulation and subsequent organ and tissue damage. Antioxidant status and its role in the accumulation of free radicals has been observed in a number of psychological disorders. Glutathione is commonly referred to as the principal antioxidant of the brain and, therefore, plays a critical role in maintaining redox homeostasis. Reduced levels of glutathione in the brain increase its vulnerability to oxidative stress, and may be associated with the development and p

The role of prostatic inflammation in the development and progression of benign and malignant diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate the role of prostatic inflammation in the development and progression of benign and malignant prostatic diseases. RECENT FINDINGS: Preclinical studies demonstrate that the activation of a chronic inflammatory prostatic response plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa). Approximately 40-70% of patients with BPH-related lower urinary tract symptoms harbour chronic inflammation at pathologic evaluation. These individuals should be considered at increased risk of symptom progression a

Pericytes in tissue fibrosis.

Pericytes are mural cells, embedded within the microvascular basement membrane and primarily involved in preservation of vessel integrity and regulation of vascular permeability and blood flow. Their study poses major challenges due to the absence of specific and reliable markers for their identification. Emerging evidence suggests that, in addition to their involvement in the regulation of microvascular responses, pericytes may also play a central role in repair, inflammation, and fibrosis in many different organs. Following injury, pericytes may dissociate from endothelial cells, acquiring i

Case for a one-health approach to venomous snakebite, using the epidemiological triad model, for mitigation.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming (SBE) was listed as a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD), by the WHO in 2017. SBE kills more victims than all the other NTDs put together. SBE is a condition associated with poverty, inequity, inaccessibility and poor health systems. The major burden of SBE is borne by the countries of South-Asia, led by India, with an estimated 58,000 deaths annually. This as compared with the USA or Australia where deaths due to SBE is in a single digit, despite having equally venomous species. SBE is also a significant cause for loss of livestock in the Tropics. Epilogue: continuing points of contention in the recovered memory debate.

Four contentious issues in the recovered memory debate are explored. Volume contributors offer differing perspectives on the generalizability of laboratory research, on the role of emotion in memory, on the prevalence of false recoveries, and on the motivations that underlie differences in opinion, especially with regard to whether the debate ought to be framed within a larger sociopolitical context. The recovered memory debate is argued to center on two ethical concerns that happen to be in conflict, equality among groups on one hand and due process protections on the other. Additional moveme
