BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a primary lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia characterized by several different patterns of permanent hair loss.
SUMMARY: Trichoscopy plays an essential role in the context of LPP, as recognizing the distinctive signs of the disease facilitates the diagnosis of all forms of lichenoid alopecia.
KEY MESSAGES: This review aimed to recognizing the trichoscopic signs early on, enabling timely intervention, potentially preventing the disease from advancing to its permanent scarring stage.

We report a rare case of furuncular myiasis in a 7-year-old boy presenting with a discharging nodule over the scalp. The report details the clinical presentation, examination findings, and dermoscopic features of furuncular myiasis. To the best of our knowledge, Chrysomya bezziana has never been reported to cause furuncular myiasis. In vivo and ex vivo dermoscopy features help in diagnosis by obviating the need for microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have described the use of botulinum toxin (BTX) in the treatment of scalp conditions, but no studies have synthesized these collective findings.
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review to summarize the scalp conditions for which treatment with BTX has been described.
METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus for articles in English published before November 1, 2022, using the keywords "hair" or "scalp" and BTX-related search terms. Articles that described patients who received injections of BTX for the management of scalp conditions were included.

BACKGROUND: The effects of chemical straighteners on the scalp and hair shaft are not fully known, although such substances are widely used. Hair straightening became popular in Brazil with the use of formaldehyde and its derivatives, despite the prohibition by the current legislation.
OBJECTIVE: To identify changes in hair shaft and scalp caused by the use of chemical straighteners.
METHODS: A search was performed using keywords in three databases from 03/16/2020 to 05/20/2020, with publications between the years 2000 to 2020. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 33 articles…

High-frequency oscillations (HFO) in scalp EEG are a new and promising noninvasive epilepsy biomarker, providing added prognostic value, particularly in pediatric lesional epilepsy. However, it is unclear if lesion characteristics, such as lesion volume, depth, type, and localization, impact scalp HFO rates. We analyzed scalp EEG from 13 children and adolescents with focal epilepsy associated with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), low-grade tumors, or hippocampal sclerosis. We applied a validated automated detector to determine HFO rates in bipolar channels. We identified the lesion characterist…

Meningiomas occur rarely in extracranial sites, including the skin, where they may pose a diagnostic challenge because of their histopathologic overlap with several other spindle-cell tumors. Cutaneous meningiomas are divided into type I (congenital), type II (ectopic), and type III (via direct extension) lesions. We present a rare case of atypical meningioma of the skin in a 71-year-old woman who presented with a painful and enlarging lesion on the left central frontal scalp. Biopsy showed bone and soft tissue with involvement of a spindle cell neoplasm, consisting of whorled nests with atypi…

Perifolliculitis capitis abscedens et suffodiens or dissecting cellulitis (DC) is a rare and chronic disease with a predilection for the occipital, vertex, and parietal scalp. DC is characterized by multinodular lesions with purulent drainage and sinus tract formation. It is classically seen in middle-aged males of African descent. The etiology of the disease is unknown; however, leading theories suggest that stasis associated with follicular occlusion begets bacterial infection and follicular destruction with a subsequent granulomatous and neutrophilic response.1 This is supported by the supp…

Neuroendocrine carcinomas are a rare, heterogenous group of malignancies that arise from neuroendocrine cells throughout the body. Cutaneous metastasis of neuroendocrine carcinoma is uncommon and they can be easily misdiagnosed as benign epidermal cysts or Merkel cell carcinoma. Collectively, histopathology, immunochemical profile, biochemical markers, and nuclear imaging can guide the diagnosis of neuroendocrine metastasis and localization of primary tumors.

Cutaneous melanoma is a public health issue and the head and neck region is of particular interest, despite accounting for only 9.0% of the total body surface, it harbours 20% of melanoma cases. Data from the literature show that scalp melanomas (SM) carry high mortality rates, with a 10-year survival rate of 60% which lead them to be named as the "invisible killer". Moreover, SMs are more common in the elderly than in young population, and they occur six times more frequently in men than in women. This is probably related to the higher incidence of androgenetic alopecia and a higher cumulativ…

Cutaneous adenosquamous carcinoma is a mixed, squamous and glandular, rare malignant tumor of the skin characterized by a mixed, squamous, and glandular differentiation. Few cases of this tumor have been so far reported, and even fewer have been thoroughly studied by immunohistochemistry. We report here an exceptional case of cutaneous adenosquamous carcinoma which showed immunohistochemically features of intestinal differentiation, namely because of the expression of keratin 20 and CDX2, a marker of gastrointestinal tumors.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) represents 2% to 3% of human cancers and is aggressive, with metastatic capability. The frequent metastatic sites are lung, bone, and liver. Reports of RCC metastatic to skin, and especially scalp are rare. Here we present an 83-year-old woman who was diagnosed with RCC 19 years prior and had a metastatic scalp lesion. An 83-year-old woman presented with a red-to-purple, protruding lesion at the right parietotemporal area. Twenty-three years ago, a right renal mass was incidentally discovered on ultrasound through a routine medical examination. She underwent right ne…

Lesions of the scalp can present a challenging differential diagnosis to the primary care provider, especially in remote military settings where specialist care is not immediately available. Scalp lesions can be painful and disfiguring, and cause duty limitations if they interfere with the donning of personal protective equipment such as helmets, hardhats, or firefighting gear. We present a case of dissecting scalp cellulitis on an active- duty Navy Sailor who was leaving on an extended underway period on his ship the next day.

Erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder defined. It usually affects elderly people and is characterized by extensive pustular lesions, erosions, and crusts located on the scalp. The pathogenesis of this disease is not completely understood, but a known predisposing factor is skin trauma. Autoimmune disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and Takayasu aortitis are associated diseases reported. The clinical examination reveals erythema, erosions, crusts, follicular pustules, and in advanced stages, scarring a…

Scabies is an infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei resulting in intensely pruritic erythematous papules tipped with hemorrhagic crusts. Current guidelines and medication labels instruct application of topical permethrin 5% cream from neck down for treatment of adult patients with scabies. Although scalp and head involvement are observed in infants, it is rare in older children and adults. Herein, we present a case of an 11-month-old patient who had scalp involvement, and required a scalp-to-toes application of permethrin. We also present a 77-year-old patient with scabies involving the head, who f…
