Adaptation, reliability, and validation of the Turkish version of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited number of disease-specific outcome measurement scales in Turkish, which can be used for individuals with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The aim of this study was to translate, adapt, and evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Bad Sobernheim Stress Questionnaire-Deformity (TRv.BSSQD) questionnaire in Turkish patients with AIS. OBJECTIVES: After the translation and back-translation process, the TRv.BSSQD and Scoliosis Research Society-22 questionnaires were completed in face-to-face interviews with 49 patients with AIS. The TRv

The Influence of Perfectionism, Self-Esteem and Resilience on Young People's Mental Health.

The current study explored whether maladaptive perfectionism and low self-esteem constituted reliable risk factors of student mental illness, as well as determining whether resilience moderates these predictive relationships. 434 University undergraduate students were recruited. Depression and anxiety were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7). Perfectionism, self-esteem and resilience were analyzed in relation to the PHQ9 and GAD-7 scores via a regression analysis. Perfectionism discrepancy, self-esteem and resilience all s

[Perceptions of the organization and the practice of dental healthcare by the professionals working in prisons].

INTRODUCTION: Few studies have been conducted on the role and position of dental surgeons in prisons. Interestingly though, dental surgeons perform in a peculiar working environment, since the organizations are divided into two administrative structures: penitentiary and hospital administrations. Stakeholders’ perceptions of both the current oral healthcare organization in prisons and the interactions between prison and hospital administrations’ professionals will be at the core of this study. PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: This article aims at assessing hospital and penitentiary administra

How do people with neurofibromatosis type 1 (the forgotten victims) live? A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) is a rare genetic disorder, associated with some physical symptoms including spots and tiny bumps on the skin, and internal organ involvement. People suffering from neurofibromatosis face various challenges in their daily lives. However, there is little understanding on how patients deal with neurofibromatosis. This study aimed to investigate the life challenges of patients with NF1. METHODS: This qualitative study was performed by implementing a grounded theory with the cooperation of the Society for Neurofibromatosis Patients over the course of 15

Appearance or attitude: what matters to craniosynostosis patients? Association of self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and facial aesthetics in patients with sagittal and metopic synostosis.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of depressive symptoms and self-esteem, and their association with facial asymmetry in adults who were operated on in early childhood due to metopic and sagittal craniosynostosis. METHODS: The study population consisted of 49 non-syndromic patients of whom 41 had premature fusion of the sagittal and 8 of metopic suture. There were 64 controls from the Finnish National Register. Self-esteem, depressive symptoms, and subjective satisfaction with one's appearance were evaluated by using the Rosenberg self-esteem questionnaire (RSE),

The scarlet V: how women with dyspareunia negotiate postfeminist discourses of sexual agency.

Young women must often contend with cultural scripts dictating neoliberal/postfeminist ideals of female sexual agency, including the ability to act in accord with one's personal sexual self-interest. The aim of this study was to explore how young women (n = 26) living with dyspareunia (pain experienced during penetrative sexual activity) negotiate these ideals. We found that in addition to discussing traditional discourses that assign value to women in accordance with their perceived sexual virtue, women judged themselves according to the degree to which their behaviour reflected sexual agency

Self-motion perception without sensory motion.

Various studies have demonstrated a role for cognition on self-motion perception. Those studies all concerned modulations of the perception of a physical or visual motion stimulus. In our study, however, we investigated whether cognitive cues could elicit a percept of oscillatory self-motion in the absence of sensory motion. If so, we could use this percept to investigate if the resulting mismatch between estimated self-motion and a lack of corresponding sensory signals is motion sickening. To that end, we seated blindfolded participants on a swing that remained motionless during two condition

Relations between God-Images and Early Maladaptive Schemas.

Our God image not only determines the nature of our relationship with God, it also influences our personality, actions, self-concept, mindset and social relations. It acts within and through us. Although everyone has a God image - regardless of whether one is a believer or not - the ways in which we experience God's relation to us are manifold. It is not unusual that even believers of the same congregation give accounts of diverse God images. Schema is a widely used term in psychology. Schemas describe cognitive structures that filter, encode and interpret the stimuli affecting the person. The

Development and validation of the multidimensional version of the fear of self questionnaire: Corrupted, culpable and malformed feared possible selves in obsessive-compulsive and body-dysmorphic symptoms.

In recent years, cognitive-behavioural models of OCD have increasingly recognized the potential role of feared possible selves in the development and maintenance of OCD, while simultaneously re-examining factors that have historically been linked to self-perceptions in OCD. The current article describes the development and validation of a multidimensional version of the Fear of Self Questionnaire (FSQ-EV) in a non-clinical (N = 626) and clinical OCD sample (N = 79). Principal component analyses in the non-clinical sample revealed three conceptually and factorially distinct components revolving

Determining the potential link of self-compassion with eating pathology and body image among women: a longitudinal mediational study.

PURPOSE: This longitudinal study aims to determine what factors mediate the previously established link between self-compassion and eating pathology/body image concerns, over a 6-month period. METHODS: A community sample of 274 adult women (M = 29.50 years) completed standardised validated measures of self-compassion (Self-Compassion Scale), rumination (Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire), shame (Other as Shamer Scale), perfectionism (Short Form of the Revised Almost Perfect Scale), self-criticism (Levels of Self-Criticism Scale), eating pathology (Eating Disorder Examination Questionnair

A transdiagnostic model of low self-esteem: pathway analysis in a heterogeneous clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Low self-esteem (LSE) has been associated with several psychiatric disorders, and is presumably influenced by transdiagnostic factors. Our study was based both on investigations of the relationship between depression and LSE (vulnerability, scar, reciprocal models) and on theories of cognitive factors contributing to the development and maintenance of LSE, such as Melanie Fennell's model, the catalyst model and the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model. AIMS: Based on the theories above, in our cross-sectional study we aimed at understanding more specifically the transdiagnosti

Quality of life in young men with androgenetic alopecia: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is related to adverse psychological consequences in young men, which is further accentuated by the astronomical growth of the hair transplant industry. However, a deeper insight into AGA and its impact on young men are lacking in the literature. Moreover, its impact is currently measured with general dermatological health-related quality of life questionnaires. AIMS: Aim of this study was hence twofold: (i) to explore the individual experience of men with AGA via a qualitative study and (ii) to use these insights to create and preliminary validate a set

Perfectionistic Self-Presentation, Socially Prescribed Perfectionism, Self-Oriented Perfectionism, Interpersonal Hopelessness, and Suicidal Ideation in U.S. Adults: Reexamining the Social Disconnection Model.

OBJECTIVE: Research has linked perfectionism to increased suicidal ideation (SI), although less is known regarding the mechanisms that explain this relation. The Perfectionism Social Disconnection Model (PSDM) posits that interpersonal aspects of perfectionism cause interpersonal problems (e.g., hostility, loneliness) which in turn increase a person's risk for experiencing SI. The present study aimed to replicate and extend previous findings related to the PSDM and SI using measures of interpersonal hopeless and general hopelessness. METHOD: Tenets of the PSDM were tested in a sample of 313 U

Building 'a compassionate armour': The journey to develop strength and self-compassion in a group treatment for complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with severe difficulties in emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, and shame. For individuals with these difficulties, exposure-based treatment for PTSD symptoms is less effective and can even be harmful. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of change at an individual and group level for individuals completing treatment for complex PTSD. DESIGN: Constructivist grounded theory was used to develop an explanatory theoretical model of the change process. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducte

Maladaptive Rumination Mediates the Relationship between Self-Esteem, Perfectionism, and Work Addiction: A Largescale Survey Study.

Background: Empirical evidence suggests that low self-esteem and high perfectionism are significant personality correlates of work addiction, but the mechanisms underlying these relationships are still unclear. Consequently, exploring cognitive mechanisms will help to better understand work addiction. For instance, rumination is one of the under-researched topics in work addiction, although it may explain specific thinking processes of work-addicted individuals. The purpose of the study was to test the mediating role of maladaptive rumination (i.e., brooding) in the relationship between person

A case of mirror image agnosia and mirrored self-misidentification syndrome in schizophrenia without dementia or structural abnormalities.

Delusional misidentification syndrome (DMS) is an umbrella term encompassing a variety of disorders. One rare form of DMS is the delusional misidentification of one's own reflection, known as "mirrored self-misidentification syndrome". In "mirror image agnosia", the ability to identify the image of self and/or others in the mirror is lost, while the ability to identify the mirror itself is preserved. To our knowledge, mirror image agnosia has never been described in a patient with schizophrenia. Herein we present a case of a patient with schizophrenia with severe delusions of both mirrored sel

When do anorexic patients perceive their body as too fat? Aggravating and ameliorating factors.

OBJECTIVE: Our study investigated body image representations in female patients with anorexia nervosa and healthy controls using a size estimation with pictures of their own body. We also explored a method to reduce body image distortions through right hemispheric activation. METHOD: Pictures of participants' own bodies were shown on the left or right visual fields for 130 ms after presentation of neutral, positive, or negative word primes, which could be self-relevant or not, with the task of classifying the picture as "thinner than", "equal to", or "fatter than" one's own body. Subsequently

Mechanisms of Change in the Prevention of Depression: An Indicated School-Based Prevention Trial at the Transition to High School.

OBJECTIVE: Depression represents a major public health concern, and prevalence increases significantly during adolescence. The high school transition may exacerbate the risk of depression for youth with pre-existing vulnerability. The High School Transition Program (HSTP) is a brief, skills-based intervention that has demonstrated efficacy in preventing depression in adolescents. The current study aimed to evaluate the theorized mechanisms of change of the HSTP intervention by testing a multiple mediation model including school attachment (SA) and self-esteem (SE) as two mediators of treatment
