Influence of sedation on onset and quality of euthanasia in sheep.

The purpose of this study was to determine if dexmedetomidine administered IV prior to euthanasia in sheep affected the speed or quality of euthanasia. Twenty clinically healthy Dorset-cross adult ewes between 1 and 3years of age were enrolled in a randomized blinded experimental trial. The subjects were randomly assigned to receive dexmedetomidine 5μg/kg IV or an equivalent volume of saline. Five minutes later, euthanasia was accomplished with a pentobarbital/phenytoin overdose given IV. The time to apnea, asystole, cessation of audible heartbeat, and absence of corneal reflex were recorded b…

Hemangiopericytoma of the Cerebellopontine Angle: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.

Primary meningeal hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare, aggressive dura based tumor that remarkably mimics a meningioma clinically and radiologically. Its occurrence within the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is exceptional, and establishing the exact diagnosis is of the utmost importance since total resection remains the cornerstone of treatment. A 42-year-old man presented with a three-month history of progressively worsening vertigo and difficulty in walking. On admission, his neurological examination revealed a right peripheral facial palsy, right abducens palsy and left hemiparesis, suggesting

Wolf in sheep's clothing: a case of carcinoma erysipeloides.

Cutaneous metastases of the breast carcinomas can present clinically as nodules, plaques and tumors (most commonly as nodules) as well as 'erysipelas-like' lesions are known as 'carcinoma erysipeloides'. We want to share our experience in diagnosing a middle-aged lady with carcinoma erysipeloides secondary to breast carcinoma and her management as this is commonly misdiagnosed as cellulitis or scleroderma in general practice. Unfortunately, the patient had presented to us at a late stage with wide-spread metastasis, and as such, chemotherapy was the only available option. She expired after her

Sheep and Fasciola hepatica in Europe: the GLOWORM experience.

Fasciola hepatica infection challenges health, welfare and productivity of small ruminants throughout the world. The distribution of F. hepatica in sheep in Europe is usually scattered and studies are generally concerned with a single area making it difficult to compare results from different environments, climates and management regimes. In order to elucidate the current scenario in terms of prevalence and intensity of F. hepatica infection in sheep farms across Europe, a standardized cross-sectional survey was conducted in three pilot areas in Ireland, Switzerland and Italy, all part of the …

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic sheep in Belgium.

Even though infected sheep are a potential source of Toxoplasma gondii infection in humans, information is lacking concerning the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in sheep in Belgium. We examined 3170 serum samples for anti-Toxoplasma IgG in sheep by total lysate antigen (TLA) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). IgG to T. gondii was demonstrated in 87.4% of the tested sheep and in 96.2% of the 209 tested flocks. The seroprevalences in Antwerp (65.2%) and Wallonia (68.6%) are statistically lower than in the other regions in Belgium (96.7-97.8%) (P<0.05). The present study is the fir…

Ultrasound as a monitoring tool for cystic echinococcosis in sheep.

An ultrasound-based survey for cystic echinococcosis (CE) in sheep was carried out in Sardinia in 2012. The study was done on three farms (A, B, C) which had been pre-selected for different CE prevalence levels (A: >80%, B: 50-80%, C: <50%). In total, 129 sheep were examined on the farms using portable ultrasound equipment (A: n=51, B: n=30, C: n=48). Within a period of 20 days after ultrasound examination, all sheep were slaughtered and underwent a parasitological post-mortem examination for cysts in the liver and lungs. With post-mortem as gold standard, ultrasonography gave a test sensitivi…

The first recorded epidemic of leptospirosis in sheep in Egypt.

An outbreak of leptospirosis in sheep is recorded as the first epidemic of ovine leptospirosis in Egypt. The sick animals showed typical symptoms such as fever, jaundice, red urine and abortion, with a fatal course. Acute and convalescent sera were tested for demonstration of seroconversion using the microscopic agglutination testto confirm infection. Long-acting tetracycline was successfully used for treatment.

Cystic biliary atresia: a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Neonatal obstructive jaundice is frequently explained by biliary atresia (BA) or the presence of a choledochal cyst (CC). Cystic biliary atresia (CBA) has been a proposed as a subtype of BA with projected improved outcomes. We aimed to characterize these lesions further. We conducted an Institutional Review Board-approved review of all patients treated for obstructive jaundice at our tertiary children's hospital over 10 years. Over the decade we evaluated 91 children with obstructive jaundice: 13 CBA, 52 BA, and 26 CC. Patients with isolated CBA and BA were diagnosed significantly earlier than

Abnormal position of lymph nodes in a freemartin sheep.

In this freemartin case report the authors present the clinical and morphological findings of a freemartin ewe with an abnormal position of two lymph nodes. Freemartins, infertile females from mixed-sex twin pregnancies, are chimeras, having two cell populations: one of their own (XX DNA) and one from their male twin (XY DNA). Freemartins can have varying degrees of phenotypic masculinization, including, in some cases, having active male gonads and exhibiting male behaviors such as heat detection and aggressiveness. During the clinical examination of the freemartin ewe, a morphological abnorma

Induction of allergic responses to peanut allergen in sheep.

Peanut allergy is the leading cause of deaths due to food-induced anaphylaxis but despite continued research, there are currently no specific treatments available. Challenge testing is limited in patients due to the high risk of adverse reactions, emphasising the need for an appropriate animal model. In the present study we examine the induction of allergic responses in a sheep model for peanut allergy. Sheep were sensitised with peanut (PN) extract and in separate injections with ovalbumin (OVA) or house dust mite (HDM) extract. Serum PN-specific IgE responses were detected in 40-50% of immun…

An outbreak of sheep rabies in Shanxi province, China.

This study describes an outbreak of rabies in a flock of 110 sheep in Yangqu county, Shanxi province, China, in 2010. The flock, housed in a cave being used as a sheepfold, was attacked by a rabid dog, which resulted in 36 deaths over the following 2 days from the crushing and trampling caused by panic, and some 15 further deaths from rabies 2 weeks later. Rabies in the sheep was confirmed by the fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and RT-PCR. Rabies virus was isolated from the index dog brain and its N gene was partially sequenced (nucleotides 77-880). Results showed that the canine isolate (SXTY…

[Pyogenic granuloma of the thumb following the bite of a sheep].

In the case of a patient with a large pyogenic granuloma of the thumb about three months after the bite of a sheep, we covered the defect after resection with a split thickness skin graft. Although at first amputation was discussed, after a few months a very good functional and aesthetic result was achieved.

[Coenurosis in a sheep in Santa Catarina State, Brazil].

Coenurus cerebralis infection is commonly occurring parasite in small ruminants worldwide. A ewe showed head inclination to the left, equilibrium loss, impetuous movement to the high, falling in left lateral recumbency and recovering movement later. Seven days later, the animal remained in permanent lateral recumbency and nystagmus. Euthanasia was carried out and a routine necropsy examination was performed. A large volume was found on the right side of the cerebellum due to a cystic cavity, with approximately 1.5 cm of diameter and it was identified as Coenurus cerebralis.

Filarioid nematodes in cattle, sheep and horses in Finland.

BACKGROUND: In autumn 2006, Finnish meat inspection data revealed lesions in tendons, muscles and ligaments of bovine hind legs leading to partial condemnation of carcasses. In gross pathological examination at Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira, Oulu (now Fish and Wildlife Health) Research Unit, Onchocerca sp. (Filarioidea; Onchocercidae) nematodes were detected in lesions. Due to this, a pilot study was made in order to find out what filarioid nematodes do occur in cattle, horses and sheep in Finland. METHODS: Ventral skin biopsies from 209 dairy cattle and 42 horses, as well as blood samp…

Maintenance of anaesthesia in sheep with isoflurane, desflurane or sevoflurane.

Rapid recovery from anaesthesia is advantageous in small ruminants, to reduce the risk of regurgitation. Theoretically, the least soluble inhalation agents should result in the fastest recoveries, but using additional injectable agents may negate this advantage. This study compared three inhalation agents for the maintenance of anaesthesia in sheep. Eighteen ewes that were to undergo orthopaedic surgery were allocated to one of three groups. Each group was premedicated with xylazine (0.1 mg/kg intramuscularly), anaesthesia was induced using ketamine (2 mg/kg) and midazolam (0.03 mg/kg) intrave…

A survey of Taenia multiceps coenurosis in Sardinian sheep.

A survey was carried out to assess the occurrence of Coenurus cerebralis infection in Sardinian sheep. A prevalence of 0.35% was observed when 566 regularly slaughtered sheep were examined. However, in 120 sheep with suspected symptoms of coenurosis examined from November 2001 to October 2002, a total of 299 cerebral coenurosis lesions were observed with an incidence of 1% per year. Lesions were classified as migratory, cystic and secondary. Most migratory lesions were found in sheep aged 3-6 months. Cavitary lesions containing cysts in different developing stages were found with high incidenc…
