We hypothesized that baroreceptor or chemoreceptor activation might be involved in the emetic, and prodromal cardiovascular and respiratory responses. To test this hypothesis, we induced the emetic responses by gastric distension in anesthetized Suncus murinus (house musk shrew), that had intact and absent baroreceptor and chemoreceptor afferents. Secondly, we stimulated the aortic depressor nerve (ADN) and the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) with or without gastric distension. Internal carotid artery ligation in the bifurcation area, which abolished reflex bradycardia by baroreceptor activation, an

AIM: To clarify the innervation of human gallbladder, with special reference to morphological understanding of gallstone formation after gastrectomy.
METHODS: The liver, gallbladder and surrounding structures were immersed in a 10 mg/L solution of alizarin red S in ethanol to stain the peripheral nerves in cadavers (n=10). Innervation in the areas was completely dissected under a binocular microscope. Similarly, innervation in the same areas of 10 Suncus murinus (S. murinus) was examined employing whole mount immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: Innervation of the gallbladder occurred predominantl

The levels of histamine (HA) and tele-methylhistamine (t-MH) were determined in five brain regions of Suncus murinus (suncus) and the effects of motion stimulus or drugs influencing the turnover of these amines were studied to elucidate the role of histamine in motion sickness. Shaking the animals for 2 min increased HA contents in telencephalon and diencephalon without significantly changing the t-MH levels. alpha-Fluoromethylhistidine (alpha-FMH), which is presumed to deplete the neuronal HA, tended to raise the HA levels. alpha-FMH slightly alleviated the vomiting response to motion stimulu

The pilosebaceous tumor spontaneously developed on the sidegland of an old male Suncus murinus was serially transplanted into male nude athymic (BALB/c-nu/nu) mice. By the 18th generation, tumor growth occurred in about 70% of them. The transplantability of the tumor maintained in these male mice to female or castrated male nude mice was less than 35%. The histological features of the tumor did not differ by the hormonal status of hosts. Tumor growth started later and was slower in females than in males. This androgen dependency seems to be restricted to an initial period of growth, since the

Fine strands of motor nerves were examined with the electron microscope using thin section as well as freeze-etching techniques. The specimens were taken from frog cutaneous pectoris nerve, rat sciatic nerve, mouse and shrew phrenic nerves and from human skin nerves. The perineural sheath (Henle, Ranvier, Key and Retzius) consists of one to several concentric laminae of endothelial cells; it encases nerve fascicles and eventually individual nerve fibers and terminals. The endothelial cells are extremely thin and fitted togeether smoothly by overlap and dove-tailing of their border zones. The c

Xenopsylla brasiliensis is a plague flea vector in many countries around the world. Following its report in Madagascar, questions were raised about its bioecological features and its involvement in plague epidemiology. The objective of this study was to provide updated information on the bioecology, geographic distribution and susceptibility status of X. brasiliensis to insecticide. In this sense, fleas were collected in ten sites located in two districts of Sofia Region and geographic coordinates were recorded. Host-flea interactions were analyzed using bipartite package. Dead fleas were subj

Scleral biomechanics has emerged as an important topic in eye research, particularly for understanding the pathophysiology of diseases such as myopia and glaucoma. For the biomechanical characterization of scleral tissue, the three-dimensional digital image correlation (3D-DIC) method has been widely used as an accurate optical tool for full-field deformation measurements during ex vivo inflation testing in different species like cow, pig, human, rat, and tree shrew, with a large range of eye size roughly between 38 mm and 7 mm. Mouse has been used as the common model in glaucoma and more rece

AbstractTerrestrial mammals span seven orders of magnitude in body size, ranging from the <2-g Etruscan pygmy shrew (Suncus etruscus) to the >3,900-kg African elephant (Loxodonta africana). Although body size profoundly affects the behavior, physiology, ecology, and evolution of species, how investment in functional immune defenses changes with body size across species is unknown. Here, we (1) developed a novel 12-point dilution curve approach to describe and compare antibacterial capacity against three bacterial species among >160 terrestrial species of mammals and (2) tested published predic

Dengue, a rapidly spreading mosquito-borne human viral disease caused by dengue virus (DENV), is a public health concern in tropical and subtropical areas due to its expanding geographical range. DENV can cause a wide spectrum of illnesses in humans, ranging from asymptomatic infection or mild dengue fever (DF) to life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Dengue is caused by four DENV serotypes; however, dengue pathogenesis is complex and poorly understood. Establishing a useful animal model that can exhibit dengue-fever-like signs similar to those in hum

AIMS: To elucidate the biological characteristics and stability of a newly identified staphylococcal enterotoxin Q (SEQ) against heating and digestive enzymes and to evaluate the risk of seq-harbouring Staphylococcus aureus in food poisoning.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Purified SEQ was treated with heating, pepsin and trypsin which are related to food cooking, stomach and intestine conditions, respectively. Superantigenic activity of SEQ was assessed by determining the ability of IL-2 induction in mouse spleen cells. The emetic activity of SEQ was assessed using house musk shrew, a small emetic ani

The family Hepeviridae consists of positive-stranded RNA viruses that infect a wide range of mammalian species, as well as chickens and trout. A subset of these viruses infects humans and can cause a self-limiting acute hepatitis that may become chronic in immunosuppressed individuals. Current published descriptions of the taxonomical divisions within the family Hepeviridae are contradictory in relation to the assignment of species and genotypes. Through analysis of existing sequence information, we propose a taxonomic scheme in which the family is divided into the genera Orthohepevirus (all m

Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by Staphylococcus aureus are the most recognizable bacterial superantigenic toxins causing food poisoning in humans throughout the world. However, it remains unclear how SEs induce emesis and its emetic signal pathway. We investigated a mechanism of SEA-induced emesis using a small emetic animal model, house musk shrew. SEA-induced emesis in the animals was inhibited by a 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) synthesis inhibitor and a 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist. SEA could increase 5-HT release in the small intestine. Pre-treatment with 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (

Rhabdoviruses are negative-stranded RNA viruses of the order Mononegavirales and have been isolated from vertebrates, insects, and plants. Members of the genus Lyssavirus cause the invariably fatal disease rabies, and a member of the genus Vesiculovirus, Chandipura virus, has recently been associated with acute encephalitis in children. We present here the complete genome sequence and transcription map of a rhabdovirus isolated from cultivated cells of hepatocellular carcinoma tissue from a moribund tree shrew. The negative-strand genome of tupaia rhabdovirus is composed of 11,440 nucleotides

Rat fleas and mosquitoes are insect vectors of public health importance in Burma. Plague is endemic in Central Burma and DDT has been the principal insecticide used for its control to date. Dengue haemorrhagic fever, recently introduced and transmitted by Aedes aegypti, has been spreading to major towns since 1971. The rodents, Rattus rattus, R. exulans, Bandicota bengalensis, Mus musculus, as well as shrews were commonly caught during routine trapping in the country. Rattus norvegicus, prevalent in Rangoon City, is not found in Central Burma. The rat fleas, Xenopsylla cheopis and X. astia, we…

We determined the combined impacts of habitat degradation and recurrent cyclones on a community of small mammals in a rainforest landscape in Madagascar. We used capture-release and morphometry data of 609 individuals of shrew tenrecs, rodents, and nocturnal lemurs, and vegetation surveys from 360 plots in four sites with different degradation levels for four field seasons (2021-2023) separated by two cyclone events. Combined impacts of degradation and cyclones significantly affected small mammals' diversity and capture abundance and only the body mass of the lesser tufted-tailed rat and brown

Rodents represent over 40% of known mammal species and are found in various terrestrial habitats. They are significant reservoirs for zoonotic viruses, including harmful pathogens such as arenaviruses and hantaviruses, yet knowledge of their hosts and distributions is limited. Therefore, characterizing the virome profile in these animals is invaluable for outbreak preparedness, especially in potential hotspots of mammal diversity. This study included 681 organs from 124 rodents and one Chinese tree shrew collected from Yunnan Province, China, during 2020-2021. Metagenomic analysis revealed uni

Use of herbal medicines and supplements by consumers to prevent or treat disease, particularly chronic conditions continues to grow, leading to increased awareness of the minimal regulation standards in many countries. Fraudulent, adulterated and contaminated herbal and traditional medicines and dietary supplements are a risk to consumer health, with adverse effects and events including overdose, drug-herb interactions and hospitalisation. The scope of the risk has been difficult to determine, prompting calls for new approaches, such as the combination of DNA metabarcoding and mass spectrometr
