Psychological status, including depressive symptoms, anxiety, and mastery, was measured in a community-based sample of 3,076 persons aged 55 to 85 with various chronic diseases. Strong, linear associations were found between the number of chronic diseases and depressive symptoms and anxiety, indicating that psychological distress among elderly people is more apparent in the presence of (more) diseases. Three adults with Asperger syndrome were invited to talk about their inner experiences, using an experience sampling and interview technique. They reported thoughts primarily or solely in the form of images. By contrast, normal adults previously tested with this technique reported inner experiences of a variety of forms. The present report suggests the feasibility and potential interest of the experience sampling method with high-functioning individuals with autistic disorder.

This paper presents a literature review of epidemiological data relevant to traffic accidents of children, including their personality and behavioral predisposition, social factors, association with risk taking behavior, rehabilitation, and incidence of post traumatic stress syndrome. The need for prospective studies of psychiatric sequelae of such accidents is highlighted. Three case vignettes are presented.

The cognitive model of panic disorder proposes that panic patients interpret physical symptoms in a catastrophic way, thus precipitating panic attacks. This study describes the development of a questionnaire measure designed to assess beliefs about the health implications of various symptoms. One thousand and eleven men under age forty (n = 161) or over age sixty-four (n = 850) admitted to medical and neurological services of an acute care hospital were screened for depressive symptoms as part of the Durham VA Mental Health Survey. Although the psychiatric consultant in the general hospital setting is frequently called on to distinguish major depression from adjustment disorder, no studies to date have examined whether the two diagnoses are in fact distinguishable. This study was conducted to explore reliability and validity from the Spanish version of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS). An alpha coefficient of 0.78, and a test-retest reliability of 0.83 over a 3-week period were obtained.
