Colonic lipomas have very low frequency, are usually asymptomatic and diagnosis is made incidentally. Seventy-five per cent of lipomas larger than 4 cm are symptomatic, causing abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, obstruction and exceptionally invagination. The resection of invaginated segment is mandatory in cases with invagination and can be performed by laparoscopy when colonic dilation is moderate. We present a 73-year-old man who entered the emergency department complaining of intermitent abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, absence of bowel movements and flatulence, during four days. A CT scan s

We relate the first case in the Republic of Ireland of Cronkhite Canada Syndrome (CCS). The patient presented with weight loss, alopecia, nail dystrophy, taste disturbance and classic radiologic and endoscopic features of CCS. She continued to dramatically lose weight and early repeat colonoscopy showed the interim development of an invasive sigmoid adenocarcinoma.J

Colonic lipomata are rare and mostly asymptomatic lesions; but as they become larger they may produce abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhage, and intussusception. We report the case of a 75-year-old man who suffered from nonspecific recurrent abdominal pain in the left upper and lower quadrants and had variable episodes of diarrhea and constipation of 4 weeks' duration. During colonoscopy, a giant intraluminal polyp was diagnosed at 35 cm. Abdominal helical computed tomography (CT) revealed a constipating colonic tumor with a diameter of >or=50 mm and density values equal to fat. D

We present herein a case of sigmoid colon cancer associated with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP). PHP is known to be associated with malignancy, and decreased intracolonic calcium (Ca) resulting from increased vitamin D (VD) levels may play a role in colorectal carcinogenesis. PHP was diagnosed in this patient by preoperative screening blood chemistry examination. The blood level of intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) was elevated and a parathyroid gland scintigram demonstrated abnormal uptake near the right lower lobe of the thyroid. There was no evidence of bone metastasis, and a sigmoid cole

An atypical case of Fabry's disease, a rare congenital disorder of glyco-lipid metabolism, associated with sigmoid cancer was reported. A 50-year-old man who had been diagnosed as having atypical form of Fabry's disease complained of lower abdominal pain and difficult defection. A barium enema and an endoscopic examination disclosed sigmoid colon cancer. The cancer was curatively resected. Fabry's disease is often associated with intestinal disease, but the patient with Fabry's disease associated with intestinal malignancy has not been reported.

Atheroemboli-associated inflammatory type polyps localized to a portion of the sigmoid colon occurred in a 68-year-old diabetic man presenting with a 2-year history of bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. The patient underwent segmental resection of the sigmoid colon. The specimen contained 15 polyps ranging from 0.3 to 1.9 cm in greatest dimension, localized to an 8-cm length of sigmoid colon. The polyps had an edematous submucosa with a superficially ulcerated mucosa. Microscopically, arterioles within the submucosa of the polyps contained organized atheroemboli. The overlying mucosa was larg

Colonic neuroendocrine cell carcinoma (NEC), which is a rare subtype of colon epithelial neoplasm, has been reported to show extremely aggressive characteristics with a 1-year survival rate of 20%. We report herein a resected case of NEC that manifested bacterial sepsis due to sigmoidovesical fistula. Staged surgery consisted of resecting the sigmoid colon and part of the bladder four weeks after construction of an ileostomy to alleviate septic shock. The resected specimen was histologically diagnosed as NEC invading the wall of the urinary bladder with metastasis to the regional lymph nodes.

AIM: The primary objective of this study was to determine the clinical impact of using sigmoid take-off (STO) in the management of rectal cancer. We also evaluated the inter-observer reliability in the identification of STO.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed staging MRI of patients with mid and high-rectal cancers performed between January 2019 and December 2022. The location of the tumour was reclassified based on STO as defined by D'Souza et al. (2018) and compared with the location determined based on distance from the anal verge. The proportions of cases that show a

BACKGROUND: Metastatic adenocarcinoma of the colon is a frequently encountered medical situation. Metastasis to the mandible from adenocarcinoma of the colon is very unusual and rarely reported. We report the case of a 73-year-old man with metastatic adenocarcinoma to the mandible.
METHODS: The patient was referred for evaluation of a mass of 2 months' duration in the right parotid gland. He gave a history of watery bowel movements of unknown duration. Physical examination revealed a 7- x 6-cm hard mass, which seemed to be fixed to the right mandible. A CT scan revealed a destructive process

Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a rare surgical emergency characterised by soft tissue necrosis and systemic compromise. Typically it originates following adjacent skin and soft tissue insult; however, our unusual case required a high index of clinical suspicion to avert potential mortality. A man in his 60s with diabetes mellitus presented with 2 weeks of knee pain, swelling and necrotic skin on the posterior calf. X-ray demonstrated subcutaneous emphysema. Initial debridement confirmed extensive necrotising fasciitis of the whole lower limb with tracking through femoral canal into the abdomen.
