Pregnancy affects maternal performance, feed intake, and digestion kinetics parameters in beef heifers.

This study aimed to quantify the effects of physiological status (PS) and the potential interaction of this factor with days of pregnancy (DOP) on beef heifers' weight variation, intake, and digestion kinetics. Twelve rumen-cannulated zebu beef heifers (n = 7 pregnant; n = 5 nonpregnant) were used. Heifers were placed in individual pens and fed medium-quality corn silage plus a protein-based supplement. Heifers' body weight was assessed at the beginning and end of each collection period. The feed intake was measured daily. Target outcomes were evaluated at 107, 170, 208, 240, 267, and 286 DOP.

Effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product on ruminal fermentation, total tract digestibility, blood proinflammatory cytokines, and plasma metabolome of Holstein steers fed a high-grain diet.

This study aimed to assess the impact of Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP) on digestibility, ruminal fermentation, and plasma metabolome of Holstein steers fed a high-grain diet. Steers were fed diet with 80% concentrate and 20% corn silage once daily ad libitum. Steers were stratified based on initial body weight (BW) and randomly assigned to two treatments: 1) control (CON), a basal diet without SCFP; 2) basal diet + 12 g/head/day SCFP, top-dressed. Eight rumen-cannulated Holstein steers (BW: 580 ± 29.2 kg) were enrolled in a crossover design study with 25-d treatment peri

Effects of dietary glycerol monolaurate supplementation on milk production and methane emissions in Holstein dairy cows.

Glycerol monolaurate (GML) has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in nonruminants. In vitro, GML reduces methane (CH4) production; however, the effects of dietary GML supplementation on milk production and CH4 emissions have not been evaluated in dairy cattle. In a completely randomized design, 42 mid-lactation Holstein cows (3.10 ± 1.08 lactations; 40.0 ± 6.65 kg milk/d) were acclimated to a tiestall barn for 3 wk and assigned to 1 of 3 treatments (n = 14/treatment): unsupplemented (CON), low-dose GML (50 g/d; LD), or high-dose GML (150 g/d; HD) for a 21-d experimental period. Fifty years of environmental progress for United States dairy farms.

Dairy farms in the United States have changed in many ways over the past 50 yr. Milk production efficiency has increased greatly, with ∼30% fewer cows producing about twice the amount of milk today. Other improvements include increases in crop yields, fuel efficiency of farm equipment, and efficiency in producing most resources used on farms (e.g. electricity, fuel, fertilizer). These improvements have led to changes in the environmental impact of farms. Through simulation of representative dairy farms in 1971 and 2020, changes in nutrient losses and farmgate life cycle assessments of greenhou

Feeding dried distillers grains with solubles to lactating beef cows: impact of excess protein and fat on cow performance, milk production and pre-weaning progeny growth.

Multiparous Angus×Simmental cows (n=54, 5.22±2.51 years) with male progeny were fed one of two diets supplemented with either dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) or soybean meal (CON), from calving until day 129 postpartum (PP) to determine effects of excess protein and fat on cow performance, milk composition and calf growth. Diets were formulated to be isocaloric and consisted of rye hay and DDGS (19.4% CP; 8.76% fat), or corn silage, rye hay and soybean meal (11.7% CP; 2.06% fat). Cow-calf pairs were allotted by cow and calf age, BW and breed. Cow BW and body condition score (BCS;

Dietary supplementation of selenium in inorganic and organic forms differentially and commonly alters blood and liver selenium concentrations and liver gene expression profiles of growing beef heifers.

In geographic regions where selenium (Se) soil concentrations are naturally low, the addition of Se to animal feed is necessary. Even though it is known that Se in grass and forage crops is primarily present in organic forms (especially as L-selenomethionine, L-selenocystine, and L-selenocystathionine), the feeding of Se in the naturally occurring organic selenium (OSe) compounds produces higher blood and tissue Se levels than the inorganic Se (ISe) salts, and that animal metabolism of OSe and ISe is fundamentally different. Se is commonly added in inorganic form as sodium selenite to cattle f

Effect of feeding duration and rumen fill on behaviour in dairy cows.

The aim of the present experiment was to test the hypothesis that oral manipulation of feed is a behavioural need in cattle, irrespective of actual rumen load. Twelve rumen fistulated cows were used and subjected to four different treatments: low rumen content+long duration of eating (A), high rumen content+short duration of eating (B), high rumen content+long duration of eating (=positive control) (C) and low rumen content+short duration of eating (=negative control) (D). To obtain treatment A and B, rumen content was transferred by hand from cow A to B through the rumen fistulaes. Each treat

Effect of an Aspergillus oryzae-derived extract additive on metabolizable amino acid availability in growing dairy heifers.

Aspergillus oryzae (AO), a filamentous fungi used as a feed additive in livestock diets, has been shown to enhance the rumen microbial community, thereby improving rumen function and performance in dairy and beef cattle. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of an Aspergillus oryzae-derived extract product (AOP) on absorption of essential amino acids (EAA) from microbial crude protein (MCP) and absorption of EAA from metabolizable protein in growing dairy heifers. Sixteen cannulated Holstein heifers were used in a crossover design with 2 23-d periods and 2 treatments: contr

Effects of fixed and changing forage NDF levels on intake, growth performance, and carcass traits of Nellore bulls in the feedlot.

Greater concentrate and reduced fiber intake may induce metabolic disorders, such as acidosis, laminitis, and gastrointestinal inflammation, thereby impairing growth performance. This study evaluated the effects of fixed and changing fNDF inclusion on growth performance, intake, digestion, and carcass traits of Nellore bulls during the feedlot. After a 21-day adaptation, 56 intact males (initial body weight (BW) = 460 ± 38 kg; 20 months) were fed for 100 days in a completely randomized design. Data were analyzed across three periods. During the first period (0-50 days), animals received diets

Effects of Onion Peel Inclusion on In Vitro Fermentation, Methane and Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Nutrient Degradability in Dairy Cow Diets.

Enteric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions represent a major challenge in livestock production, contributing significantly to global methane output. Various strategies have been explored to mitigate these emissions, including dietary modifications, feed additives, and genetic improvements. In the present study, the focus was on onion peel (OP), a byproduct of the onion processing industry that has shown promise as a natural feed supplement with potential methane-reducing properties. We evaluated the effect of different inclusion levels of OP at 2.5% (OP2.5), 5% (OP5), 7.5% (OP7.5), and 10% (OP10)

Biological implications of longevity in dairy cows: 1. Changes in feed intake, feeding behavior, and digestion with age.

Milk production strategies focusing on longevity and limited use of concentrate are receiving increasing attention. To evaluate such strategies, knowledge of the development with age of animal characteristics, particularly digestion, is indispensable. We therefore investigated the development of feed intake, chewing activity, and digestion in 30 lactating Brown Swiss cows (876-3,648 d old) and 12 heifers (199-778 d old). We also studied whether age effects were exhibited differently in animals selected from herds subjected for 11 yr either to a forage-only or to a forage-concentrate feeding re

Detection and identification by PCR of Clostridium chauvoei in clinical isolates, bovine faeces and substrates from biogas plant.

BACKGROUND: Clostridium chauvoei causes blackleg, an acute disease associated with high mortality in ruminants. The apparent primary port of entry is oral, during grazing on pasture contaminated by spores. Cases of blackleg can occur year after year on contaminated pastures. A method to determine the prevalence of C. chauvoei spores on pasture would be useful. The standard method for C. chauvoei detection is culture and biochemical identification, which requires a pure culture. In most muscle samples from cattle dead from blackleg the amount of C. chauvoei in samples is high and the bacterium c
