Treatment of accidental hypothermia: Impact of insulation placement above or below an active external rewarming device on temperature and burn risk.

INTRODUCTION: Prehospital treatment of accidental hypothermia typically involves using active external rewarming, usually either with chemical or electrical heating pads. Active external rewarming is a recommended treatment method, but carries the risk of burn injury, which can occur if tissue temperature exceeds 43 °C. Some device manufacturers discourage direct skin contact; however, there are no recommendations regarding type or amount of insulating material that should be placed between the patient and the device. We aimed to describe the impact of different insulating materials above and

Optimisation of cutaneous microbiota sampling methodology.

INTRODUCTION: The cutaneous microbiome plays an essential role in guarding against invasive pathogens and maintaining healthy skin homeostasis. Several studies have demonstrated the importance of a healthy skin microbiome through its alteration in several diseases. Differing skin characteristics across the body (temperature, pH, humidity) create distinct ecological niches inhabited by diverse microbial communities. The study of cutaneous microbiota is further complicated by numerous variables at all stages of investigation, including study design, skin sampling method, sample storage, sample p

Establishing A Mouse Model for Respiratory Tract Extreme Low-temperature Air Inhalation.

Currently, constructing a mouse model for cold environmental stimulation employs cold-heat plates and wearable cooling devices. These methods can partially fulfill the requirements for studying the responses and regulatory effects of mouse skin or neural circuits to cold stimulation. Numerous clinical studies have substantiated the correlation between exposure to low-temperature environments and the development of various diseases. Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on the continuous exchange of information between organs and tissues, providing a novel perspective on addressing longst

The distribution of cutaneous sudomotor and alliesthesial thermosensitivity in mildly heat-stressed humans: an open-loop approach.

The distribution of cutaneous thermosensitivity has not been determined in humans for the control of autonomic or behavioural thermoregulation under open-loop conditions. We therefore examined local cutaneous warm and cool sensitivities for sweating and whole-body thermal discomfort (as a measure of alliesthesia). Thirteen males rested supine during warming (+4 degrees C), and mild (-4 degrees C) and moderate (-11 degrees C) cooling of ten skin sites (274 cm2), whilst the core and remaining skin temperatures were clamped above the sweat threshold using a water-perfusion suit and climate chambe…

[Transcutaneous oxygen partial pressure measurement in follow-up of patients with erysipelas].

In 24 patients with erysipelas, skin oxygen tension (tcPO2) was measured in the centre, at the border and outside the area of skin inflammation before, during and after antibiotic treatment. At the same time ESR, leucocytes and body temperature were determined. Skin erythema persisted over a period of about 7 days. Leucocytes and body temperature showed normal values after 3 days, while ESR was raised continuously in the first 3 weeks. Skin oxygen tension showed a good correlation with the clinical picture, but was still reduced at the end of therapy. About 2 weeks after disappearance of the c

Local hyperthermia induces apoptosis of keratinocytes in both normal skin and condyloma acuminata via different pathways.

Local hyperthermia has been successfully used in the treatment of viral warts. However, the mechanism of action of hyperthermia has largely remained unclear. In this study we evaluated the effect of local hyperthermia on the induction of apoptosis in human keratinocytes, and expression of apoptosis-related genes in both condyloma acuminata (CA) and normal skin. The study showed that higher hyperthermia increased the number of apoptotic keratinocytes in CA and normal skin. The temperature-dependent increased expression of Fas and Bax were observed in both CA and normal skin. In contrast, the ex

Inadvertent Perioperative Hypothermia.

Temperature regulation during the perioperative period plays an essential role in keeping patients safe while optimizing their recovery. The World Health Organization recommends preserving normothermia, identified as a core body temperature greater than 36°C, to minimize morbidity and mortality. The etiology of inadvertent perioperative hypothermia (IPH) varies in origin. Preoperative exposure, decreased ambient operating room (OR) temperature, skin exposure during preparation, unwarmed skin preparation and washout solutions, and lack of warming devices all contribute to IPH. Moreover, general

Heating and pain sensation produced in human skin by millimeter waves: comparison to a simple thermal model.

Cutaneous thresholds for thermal pain were measured in 10 human subjects during 3-s exposures at 94 GHz continuous wave microwave energy at intensities up to approximately 1.8 W cm(-2). During each exposure, the temperature increase at the skin's surface was measured by infrared thermography. The mean (+/- s.e.m.) baseline temperature of the skin was 34.0+/-0.2 degrees C. The threshold for pricking pain was 43.9+/-0.7 degrees C, which corresponded to an increase in surface temperature of approximately 9.9 degrees C (from 34.0 degrees C to 43.9 degrees C). The measured increases in surface temp

Interface-Enhanced, Multifunctional, and Breathable Piezoelectric Sensing Film for Motion and Temperature Monitoring.

To address the issues of poor interfacial stability, limited functionality, and low wearing comfort in flexible electronic skins, a breathable piezoelectric sensing film with dual pressure-temperature sensing capability was developed through electrospinning, interfacial modification, and magnetron sputtering. Polydopamine (PDA) was used to strengthen the interfacial bonding between inorganic piezoelectric particles and the polymer matrix, thereby improving the cyclic stability and signal reliability of the device. A continuous Ag conductive network was constructed to serve as both the piezoele

Determining the Definitive Time Criterion for Postherpetic Neuralgia Using Infrared Thermographic Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: The time criteria used in many studies of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) are arbitrary and do not have supporting evidence. Therefore, this study sought to determine the definite time criterion for PHN by analyzing the skin temperature to estimate the time point when zoster-induced skin inflammatory reaction ends. METHODS: Infrared thermography was used to measure the difference in skin temperature between the affected and unaffected areas (ΔTemp) in the craniocervical and thoracic regions of patients with herpes zoster (HZ). Because the ΔTemp changes from a positive value to zero…

Monitoring adaptation of skin tissue oxygenation during cycling ergometer exercise by frequency-domain diffuse optical spectroscopy.

In addition to supplying oxygen molecule O2 for metabolic functions during the adaptation to exercise, blood also plays a critical role in heat dissipation for core temperature stabilization. This study investigates the status of hemodynamic oxygenation in the forearm's skin tissue of three participants during a complete ergometer exercise from the resting to exercising, and to recovering conditions using a three-wavelength frequency-domain diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (FD DRS) alongside the monitoring of heartbeat rate and skin temperature. The FD DRS system was synchronized with radiofre…

Influence of insufflated carbon dioxide on abdominal temperature compared to oesophageal temperature during laparoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Body core temperature is an important vital parameter during surgery and anaesthesia. It is influenced by several patient-related and surgery-related factors. Laparoscopy is considered beneficial in terms of a variety of parameters, for example, postoperative pain and length of hospital stay. Non-humidified, non-warmed insufflated CO2 applied during laparoscopy is standard of care. This prospective observational trial therefore evaluates the impact of non-humidified CO2 at room temperature on abdominal temperature and its correlation to body core temperature. METHODS: Seventy pati

Thermometry in paediatric practice.

Body temperature is commonly measured to confirm the presence or absence of fever. However, there remains considerable controversy regarding the most appropriate thermometer and the best anatomical site for temperature measurement. Core temperature is generally defined as the temperature measured within the pulmonary artery. Other standard core temperature monitoring sites (distal oesophagus, bladder, and nasopharynx) are accurate to within 0.1-0.2 degrees C of core temperature and are useful surrogates for deep body temperature. However, as deep-tissue measurement sites are clinically inacces
