The objectives of this study were to test the sensitivity of the short form 36 health survey questionnaire (SF 36) to sleep disruption in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and assess its use as an outcome measure for treatment with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Two hundred and twenty-three subjects under investigation for snoring and/or daytime somnolence completed the questionnaire at presentation and again after a six month period. Subjects with OSA requiring treatment scored lower on all dimensions of the SF 36 (P < 0.05) than normative scores for the general …

One of the most important parts of the management of patients with the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is the assessment of the level of obstruction in order to allow the appropriate choice of treatment. We have recently developed the technique of sleep nasendoscopy which allows direct visualization of the site of obstruction in the sleeping patient. Having performed over a hundred of these investigations we are able to suggest a grading system for these patients dividing them into five grades. Grade 1 = simple palatal level snoring; grade 2 = single palatal level obstruction; grade 3 = pala…

Four young harp seals (aged three to five months) were implanted with electrodes for recording electrocorticograms (ECoG) of the two hemispheres, and electrocardiogram, electroculogram, and electromyogram of the neck muscles. In all the seals ECoG slow waves developed simultaneously in both hemispheres, irrespective of whether they slept on land, on the water surface or submerged. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) was present in animals on the water surface and submerged, while paradoxical sleep (PS) occurred only when the animals were submerged. Breathing in SWS could be both regular (pauses less than tw…

In this part of the chapter we have used new terminology and developed a new system for classification of sleep disorders in children. We suggest that excessive daytime sleepiness should be investigated by clinicians before troubles at school necessitate referral. The narcolepsy-hypersomnia syndrome generally has not been recognized in the pediatric age group. Symptoms of excessive fear of falling asleep need to be viewed in this context. Sleep apnea-hypersomnia has received insufficient attention in the American literature. It is a syndrome that affects both adults and children with potential…

OBJECTIVES: Poor sleep during childhood can affect multiple domains of functioning. However, the association between early infant sleep patterns and future sleep problems is not well-understood. This study aimed to assess whether maternal-reported total sleep duration (over 24 hours) and consecutive sleep duration in infancy are associated with later maternal reports of sleep problems in preschoolers.
METHODS: This longitudinal study included a community sample of 294 mother-child dyads. Total sleep duration and consecutive sleep duration were measured by maternal reports using the Questionna…

OBJECTIVE: To assess recently alcohol-abstinent chronic alcoholic patients for selected parameters indicative of sleep quality.
METHOD: Patients (n = 24, 14 male), abstinent 3-6 weeks, and healthy controls (n = 20) were admitted to a clinical sleep unit. Measurements included sleep respiratory events and periodic limb movements, using strict methodology.
RESULTS: Clear signs of sleep deterioration and a high prevalence of apneic/hypopneic episodes were observed. Apneas were found at the same frequency for men and women; this has not been described before. No periodic limb movement was found.…

The multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) has proved to be a useful diagnostical tool for patients complaining of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). The intention of the present study was to investigate the structure of MSLT naps and in particular sleep spindle and k-complex density in three different groups of EDS patients. MSLT was performed at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. 12 a.m., 2. p.m. and 4 p.m.. Each recording lasted 20 minutes and was not stopped even if sleep occurred before 20 min. Sleep was scored visually. Spindle and k-complex density was determined per minute of S2 sleep. Statistical analysis …

To examine the role of delta sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) in sleep-related growth hormone (GH) release, male rats were deprived of sleep for 4 hr by placing them on a slowly rotating wheel. Sleep deprivation by this method caused a significant increase in GH release, as indicated by the increase in plasma GH concentrations (P less than 0.01), and also in the amount of slow-wave sleep (SWS) (P less than 0.001) above initial values after removal of the animals from the rotating wheel. These increases were blocked by microinjection into the third cerebral ventricle of highly specific antiserum t…

The cerebellum, traditionally associated with motor coordination, is increasingly recognized as a regulator of non-motor functions-including cognition and emotions. However, its involvement in sleep regulation has been comparatively overlooked, mainly due to the historical exclusion of the cerebellum from electrophysiological and neuroimaging sleep research. Growing evidence now identifies the cerebellum as an active component of sleep mechanisms in both physiological and clinical contexts. Supporting findings include: (1) extensive cerebellar connectivity with major sleep-regulatory circuits;…

OBJECTIVE: Many use cannabis to promote sleep despite insufficient evidence to recommend cannabis as a sleep-aid. Sleep health may instead be promoted through sleep hygiene, though research among those using cannabis is nascent. This study evaluated daily within-person associations among aggregate and individual sleep hygiene behaviors, cannabis use, and sleep outcomes.
METHOD: Adults with regular cannabis use (N = 85) completed baseline measures and up to 14 daily diaries (n = 1,021) on cannabis use and sleep.
RESULTS: Multilevel models indicated that aggregate sleep hygiene engagement was …

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Toddler sleep is more consolidated than infant sleep and may better reflect long-term sleep regulation. Despite growing interest in maternal mental health, evidence linking maternal depression to toddler sleep remains limited. Moreover, sleep parenting practices may shape this relationship. This study aimed to examine the status of maternal depression, toddler sleep, and sleep parenting practices, as well as the moderating role of these practices in the association between maternal depression and toddler sleep.
METHODS: This research employed a cross-sectional design cond…

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare the Belun Sleep Platform (BSP), an artificial intelligence-driven home sleep testing device, with polysomnography (PSG) for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea. The BSP analyzes oxygen saturation, heart rate, and accelerometry patterns.
METHODS: Participants scheduled for PSG and with no significant cardiovascular or neuromuscular comorbidities were recruited. They underwent simultaneous in-laboratory, full-night PSG with the BSP. We assessed diagnostic properties, including sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accur…

OBJECTIVE: Among subjects undergoing polysomnography (PSG), some subjects complain of unrefreshing sleep (URS) after in-laboratory PSG (lab-PSG). The purpose of this study was to clarify whether there are differences in the backgrounds of such subjects and their polysomnographic findings.
METHODS: We asked subjects undergoing lab-PSG for the diagnosis of sleep-related breathing disorders whether they had URS immediately after lab-PSG (PSG-URS) and compared their backgrounds and polysomnographic findings.
RESULTS: We conducted an analysis of 151 subjects undergoing lab-PSG. Multivariate analy…

In remote areas, visiting a laboratory for sleep testing is inconvenient. We, therefore, developed a Mobile Sleep Lab in a bus powered by fuel cells with two sleep measurement chambers. As the environment in the bus could affect sleep, we examined whether sleep testing in the Mobile Sleep Lab was as feasible as in a conventional sleep laboratory (Human Sleep Lab). We tested 15 healthy adults for four nights using polysomnography (the first two nights at the Human Sleep Lab or Mobile Sleep Lab with a switch to the other facility for the next two nights). Sleep variables of the four measurements…

Sleep/wake disturbances (SWDs) are common following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can have deleterious impacts on recovery. Regulation of the time spent in non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) is a complex process that is influenced by both biological and environmental factors. We hypothesize that extrinsic factors such as environmental stimuli amplify SWDs after brain injury. Here, we examine the acute, sub-acute, and chronic effects of TBI with and without mechanical sleep fragmentation (SF) on sleep/wake time-in-state and architecture in established mo…
