Primary anxiety disorders and the development of subsequent alcohol use disorders: a 4-year community study of adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional findings in community surveys of adults suggest that adolescent anxiety disorders are strong predictors of the subsequent onset of alcohol use, abuse and dependence. However, prospective data that follow a sample of adolescents into adulthood are needed to confirm these associations. METHOD: Baseline and 4-year follow-up data from the EDSP-Study, a prospective community survey of 3021 (2548 at follow-up) adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 24 years at baseline carried out in Munich, were used. DSM-IV anxiety disorders, alcohol use and alcohol use disorders were

Automatic measurement of social gaze during naturalistic conversations in autism.

Standardized, granular measurement of social communication behaviors, such as social gaze during natural interactions, is needed for a range of psychiatric applications including diagnosis and detecting clinical change in conditions such as autism. Computational approaches show promise in automatically measuring social behaviors within natural settings. This study aims to automatically measure social gaze features from videos of dyadic conversations, characterize autism-related differences, and capture individual-level differences. 46 autistic Participants and 36 neurotypical Participants, age

Sub-types of safety behaviours and their effects on social anxiety disorder.

Cognitive models suggest that social anxiety disorder (SAD) is maintained through the use of safety behaviours. Previous reports propose that these safety behaviours can be subdivided into two main categories: avoidance and impression management. Study 1 investigates whether certain safety behaviours are specific to SAD. The social behaviour questionnaire was administered to individuals with SAD (N = 106), post-traumatic stress disorder (N = 28) and non-patient controls (N = 59). A factor analysis (N = 164) replicated the previously reported avoidance and impression management subtypes. Scores

Community-building before, during, and after times of trauma: the application of the LINC model of community resilience in Kosovo.

A family's heritage and values have profound bearing on the stressors they encounter and how they cope. Socioeconomic change, natural and man-made disasters, and international migration are major influences on the integrity of society. In these times of global financial crisis, communities around the world are in danger of losing their intrinsic structure and protective factors. Connectedness or attachment to family and culture of origin correlate with reduced risk-taking behaviors and a reduction in family and societal violence, posttraumatic stress, addiction, depression, suicidality, sexual

Services and supports for individuals with co-occurring disorders and long-term homelessness.

Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders are highly prevalent among individuals experiencing long-term homelessness. This paper describes strategies used by 11 projects funded by the Federal Collaborative Initiative to Help End Chronic Homelessness (CICH) to serve individuals with co-occurring disorders (COD) as they transition from homelessness to permanent-supported housing. Findings are based on the observations of clients, program team members, and administrators. This paper presents findings organized around three themes: characteristics and needs of CICH clients with COD, s

Personality disorder, depression and functioning: results from the ODIN study.

BACKGROUND: There is little information of the prevalence of personality disorder (PD) in those with depressive disorder in community samples; neither is there any data on the impact of PD on service utilisation or outcome in this setting. METHODS: A two stage screening study to identify cases of depressive disorder using SCAN in five European countries. Personality assessed 6 months after the diagnostic interview. Follow-up for 1 year using symptom and social function measures. RESULTS: Personality disorder is present in 22% of a community sample with depressive disorders but the range vari

Altered cortical-amygdala coupling in social anxiety disorder during the anticipation of giving a public speech.

BACKGROUND: Severe stress in social situations is a core symptom of social anxiety disorder (SAD). Connectivity between the amygdala and cortical regions is thought to be important for emotion regulation, a function that is compromised in SAD. However, it has never been tested if and how this connectivity pattern changes under conditions of stress-inducing social evaluative threat. Here we investigate changes in cortical-amygdala coupling in SAD during the anticipation of giving a public speech. METHOD: Twenty individuals with SAD and age-, gender- and education-matched controls (n = 20) part

Ethical issues in communicating science.

Most of the publicized work on scientific ethics concentrates on establishing professional norms and avoiding misconduct. The successful communication of science is the responsibility of all involved in the process. In one study, the increased incidence of autism and other social developmental disorders in males was investigated by examining individuals with Turner's syndrome (XO females). In the national newspaper this became "Genetic X-factor explains why boys will always be boys". The steps by which a study on developmental disorders, published in a highly prestigious journal, was transform

[Autism, chromosome 15 and the GAbaergic dysfunction hypothesis].

Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairment of social interaction, language, communication, and stereotyped, repetitive behavior. Genetic predisposition to autism has been demonstrated from families and twin studies. Despite recent advances in identifying some susceptibility candidate genes, its underlying neurological mechanism is uncertain. There are genetic, biochemical and neuropathological findings that support the hypothesis that autism could be caused by GABAergic dysfunction and it is partially responsible for the etiology of this disorder. One of the mo

Is autism an autoimmune disease?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a spectrum of behavioral anomalies characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, often accompanied by repetitive and stereotyped behavior. The condition manifests within the first 3 years of life and persists into adulthood. There are numerous hypotheses regarding the etiology and pathology of ASD, including a suggested role for immune dysfunction. However, to date, the evidence for involvement of the immune system in autism has been inconclusive. While immune system abnormalities have been reported in children with autistic disorder, there i

A pilot study of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin 5% for autism: Impact on autism spectrum and markers of neuroinflammation.

UNLABELLED: Research has shown that a subset of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) population presents with immune dysregulation. To explore this topic further, we investigated the efficacy and tolerability of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) infusion in children with ASD. In this study, participants were recruited based on a diagnosis of autistic disorder, Asperger's disorder, or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. Participants also showed evidence of immune dysfunction based on abnormal levels of specific biomarkers, including CD40 ligand (CD154), lymphocyte stimulatio

Setting and counselor type as related to program retention.

Study was made of the relationship between successful treatment outcome and staff:client ratios in two types of treatment settings. Successful treatment was defined as retention in treatment for at least 6 months and program completion. Using a total sample of 5,405 discharged clients, it was found that there were no differences in outcome between community mental health centers and dedicated drug abuse treatment programs for clients whose primary drug of abuse was either an opiate or a nonopiate exclusive of marijuana. Community mental health centers were significantly more likely to retain m

Assembling activity/setting participation with disabled young people.

Rehabilitation research investigating activity participation has been largely conducted in a realist tradition that under-theorises the relationship between persons, technologies, and socio-material places. In this Canadian study we used a post-critical approach to explore activity/setting participation with 19 young people aged 14 to 23 years with complex communication and/or mobility impairments. Methods included integrated photo-elicitation, interviews, and participant observations of community-based activities. We present our results using the conceptual lens of assemblages to surface how

[The role of the prefrontal cortex in the sensory problems of children with autism spectrum disorder and its involvement in social aspects].

INTRODUCTION: In persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), aberrant sensory perceptions could be as characteristic and disruptive as the presence of anomalies in social communication and interaction or restricted and repetitive interests. Most of them present sensory modulation disorders (hyper- or hypo-responsiveness) in several sensory channels. Furthermore, there is a deficit in the integration of the information from a number of sensory systems (for example, auditory and visual). All this would worsen the core symptoms related with communication and increase the appearance of behaviour

Transcriptomic analysis in autism spectrum disorder suggests three molecular subtypes with distinct phenotypic profiles and functional pathways.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is highly heterogeneous. Molecular subtyping of ASD based on gene expression data will help address the biological heterogeneity of ASD. We analyze RNA-seq data from 1711 ASD samples, employing unsupervised non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) to identify subtypes, and characterize them with five categories: overall ASD symptoms, social-communication deficits, restricted-repetitive-stereotyped behaviors, cognitive-adaptive function and behavior problems. We also explore subtype-specific differentially expressed genes, functional pathways, and spatiotemporal/ce

Phenotypic Characterization of Five Children With PACS1-NDD: Longitudinal Insights Into Development, Behavior, and Brain.

PACS1 neurodevelopmental disorder (PACS1-NDD), also known as Schuurs-Hoeijmakers syndrome, is a rare genetic condition caused by a recurrent de novo mutation in the PACS1 gene. Autistic traits have been reported in PACS1-NDD, but systematic longitudinal assessments are lacking. We followed five children (3 females) with genetically confirmed PACS1-NDD, aged 1.4-6.2 years at entry, over 2-3.5 years (29 assessments). Measures included standardized behavioral and cognitive assessments, eye-tracking, and structural MRI. Data were compared to 357 autistic and 123 typically developing children from

Delayed recognition of Joubert syndrome in a child initially diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual impairment.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare ciliopathy characterised by the molar tooth sign on brain MRI, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, hypotonia and developmental delay. We report an elementary school-aged boy initially diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder without intellectual impairment because of early language delay, social communication difficulties and stereotyped behaviours. Developmental screening at 4 years of age using the Denver Developmental Screening Test II demonstrated delays in language and social communication domains. At presentation to our clinic at 8 years of age, cognitive evaluat

Autistic-like behavioral effects of prenatal stress in juvenile Fmr1 mice: the relevance of sex differences and gene-environment interactions.

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common heritable form of mental retardation and monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FXS is due to a mutation in the X-linked FMR1 gene and is characterized by motor, cognitive and social alterations, mostly overlapping with ASD behavioral phenotypes. The severity of these symptoms and their timing may be exacerbated and/or advanced by environmental adversity interacting with the genetic mutation. We therefore tested the effects of the prenatal exposure to unpredictable chronic stress on the behavioral phenotype of juveniles of both sexes in t

Emotional prosody processing in autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are characterized by severe deficits in social communication, whereby the nature of their impairments in emotional prosody processing have yet to be specified. Here, we investigated emotional prosody processing in individuals with ASD and controls with novel, lifelike behavioral and neuroimaging paradigms. Compared to controls, individuals with ASD showed reduced emotional prosody recognition accuracy on a behavioral task. On the neural level, individuals with ASD displayed reduced activity of the STS, insula and amygdala for complex vs basic emo
