[Skin problems associated with poor living conditions].

People living in poor conditions are at high risk of developing different medical diseases of which dermatological diseases are very common. We present 4 clinical cases of skin diseases, which are the most prevalent amongst the majority of socially and economically vulnerable patients. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are of paramount importance, in order to avoid their spread in close- knit communities where these patients often live.

Sustaining our rivers in crisis: setting the international agenda for action.

The history of streams and rivers is as much a social and technological history as it is a scientific one. Rivers are the lifeblood of nations and the control of their waters has been fundamental to the building of human civilisations. The control or regulation of rivers embodied the advancement of institutions, administration and co-ordination; it was a manifestation of military and economic power. Yet the history of human development is also characterised by the degradation of the basic resource--polluted water, increased flooding, and the loss of biological diversity. Many early civilisatio

[Coffee tree cultivation and the social history of onchocerciasis in Soconusco, Chiapas state, Mexico].

Due to the social and ecological changes that have taken place in the region of Soconusco, Chiapas, Mexico, the coffee tree growth economy (established in the latter part of the last century) has been an important factor in the transmission of onchocerciasis. The optimum ecological conditions for the growth of the coffee tree coincide with those of the disease's growth rate vector; the mobilization of migrant workers for the cultivation and gathering of coffee beans, plus changes in the natural environment, are elements which explain the disease's distribution in the different regions. The ori

Asian mothers' risk factors for perinatal death--the same or different? A 10 year review of Leicestershire perinatal deaths.

A case-control study of all perinatal deaths in Leicestershire was established in 1976. By 1985 some 1342 singleton perinatal deaths had occurred. Perinatal mortality among patients of Asian origin was consistently higher than that among European women. Many of the sociomedical risk factors for perinatal death known at booking were common to both population groups. In this population of Asian women, however, low social class was not associated with perinatal risk and illegitimacy hardly ever occurred. In contrast, previous infertility among the Asian women was associated with risk of perinatal

The Black Death in England.

From 1348 to 1350 Europe was devastated by an epidemic of plague, called at the time the Great Mortality and later the Black Death. The epidemic reached southern Europe from the Middle East and spread northward, reaching England in June 1348. Contemporary descriptions leave no doubt of the diagnosis, but estimates of the mortality differ widely owing to lack of contemporary statistics; in England it was probably between one-third and one-half of the population. The Black Death and subsequent plague epidemics in the 14th century had marked social and economic effects, reduced the prestige of th

The pro-heroin effects of anti-opium laws in Asia.

Over 25 years anti-opium laws were enacted by three Asian governments in countries where opium use was traditional. Within months, heroin use suddenly appeared; and within a decade, heroin addiction surpassed opium addiction. The laws led to (1) increased price of narcotic drugs, (2) a heroin "industry," (3) corruption of the law enforcement system, and (4) major health problems involving parenteral drug use. The Asian experience indicates that antinarcotic laws can be effective only with careful preparations: (1) changing society's attitude toward the traditional drug from ambivalence to oppo

On the context dependency of implicit self-esteem in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive models assume that negative self-evaluations are automatically activated in individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) during social situations, increasing their individual level of anxiety. This study examined automatic self-evaluations (i.e., implicit self-esteem) and state anxiety in a group of individuals with SAD (n = 45) and a non-clinical comparison group (NC; n = 46). METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to either a speech condition with social threat induction (giving an impromptu speech) or to a no-speech condition without social thre

Testing a conceptual framework of loneliness, social isolation and health outcomes in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are established risk factors for adverse cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and cognitive outcomes in later life, yet the pathways underlying these associations remain underexplored. This study tests the structure of a published framework linking social isolation and loneliness to health outcomes through psychological, behavioural and physiological pathways. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data from 1,685 Singaporean adults over the age of 60 from the Wellbeing of the Singapore Elderly study. Path analysis was used to examine the psychological (sub

Shared music listening, emotional arousal and cognitive empathy enhance social presence in online interactions.

Music can support social bonding, especially in face-to-face interactions, but its effects in online environments with reduced social cues are less understood. This study examined how shared music listening in an audio-only online setting affects social presence, affective responses, and subsequent cooperation. In a within-subjects design, 38 individuals were assigned to music-preference-matched dyads to complete cooperative tasks after listening to music in both a socially framed shared listening condition and a solo condition. Shared listening increased social presence compared with solo lis

Using social media listening to understand barriers to genomic medicine for those living with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Technological improvements alone have not led to the integration of genomic medicine across a broad range of diseases and populations. For genomic medicine to be successfully implemented across specialties and conditions, the challenges patients and caregivers experience need to be identified using a multi-faceted understanding of the context in which these obstacles occur and how they are experienced. Individuals affected by rare conditions, like Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), express numerous challenges with accessing genomic medicine.

Aberrant responses in social interaction of dopamine transporter knockout mice.

The dopamine (DA) transporter (DAT) controls the temporal and spatial resolution of dopaminergic neurotransmission. Disruption of the Dat1 gene in mice leads to increased extracellular DA concentrations and reduced expression of D1- and D2-like receptors in striatum. The mutants are hyperactive in the open field and they display deficits in learning and memory. In humans, dopaminergic dysfunction has been associated with a number of different psychiatric disorders and some of these conditions are accompanied by abnormal social responses. To determine whether social responses were also impaired

Examining shared and unique aspects of Social Anxiety Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder using factor analysis.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are fairly common psychiatric conditions that impair the functioning of otherwise healthy young adults. Given that the two conditions frequently co-occur, measurement of the characteristics unique to each condition is critical. This study evaluated the structure and construct overlap of two screening measures of SAD and ASD. Results from 623 young adults indicated that separable, though highly correlated, factors can be derived from the two measures related to social anxiety and social difficulties. The ASD screening measure als

Approaching Social Determinants of Health in Otolaryngology - Head Neck Surgery: Linking Needs to Resources to Promote Health Equity.

Social determinants of health influence patient outcomes across all otolaryngology specialties, necessitating collaborative efforts among healthcare teams to promote health equity. Health disparities permeate healthcare, creating inequities related to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, environment, access to healthcare, education, gender, and sexual orientation. These disparities impact the diagnosis, management, and outcomes of conditions such as chronic otitis media, obstructive sleep apnea, sinusitis and allergies, hearing and balance disorders, head and neck cancer, and laryngeal or ai

The impact of social partners: investigating mixed-strain housing effects on aging in female mice.

Aging is a multifaceted process characterized by the gradual decline of physiological functions and can be modulated by various internal and external factors. While social interactions have been shown to affect behaviors and physiology in different species, the impact of social partners on aging-related phenotypes and lifespan in mice remains understudied. To address this question, we investigated various aging-related traits and lifespan in two mouse strains, C57BL/6J and BALB/c, under two different housing conditions: mixed-strain and same-strain housing. Analyses using a Generalized Linear

Predictors of activity and participation across neurodegenerative conditions: a comparison of people with motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Comparisons between neurological conditions have the potential to inform service providers by identifying particular areas of difficulty experienced by affected individuals. This study aimed to identify predictors of activity and participation in people with motor neurone disease (MND), people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and people with Parkinson's Disease (PD). METHODS: The Oxford Participation and Activities Questionnaire (Ox-PAQ) and Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Survey (MOS SF-36) were administered by postal survey to 386 people with a confirmed diagnosis of MND,
