Neural Mechanisms of Social and Nonsocial Reward Prediction Errors in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impaired predictive abilities; however, the neural mechanisms subsuming reward prediction errors in ASD are poorly understood. In the current study, we investigated neural responses during social and nonsocial reward prediction errors in 22 adolescents with ASD (ages 12-17) and 20 typically developing control adolescents (ages 12-18). Participants performed a reward prediction error task using both social (i.e., faces) and nonsocial (i.e., objects) rewards during a functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. Reward prediction errors were defin

Parental acceptance of pediatric behavior guidance techniques: a cross-sectional study from Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Effective behavior guidance in pediatric dentistry depends on both clinical technique and effective communication with parents. Understanding which techniques parents prefer, and how these preferences relate to demographics and dental anxiety, is essential for guiding clinician-parent and supporting informed decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To assess the acceptance of twelve behavior-guidance techniques (BGTs) among Egyptian parents of younger (3–6 years) and older (7–12 years) children. Additionally, the study aimed to examine whether parental acceptance is influenced by reported level

Beyond amygdala: Default Mode Network activity differs between patients with social phobia and healthy controls.

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a constellation of brain areas that decrease their activity during a wide number of different goal-oriented tasks as compared to passive "rest" tasks. DMN can be modulated by different factors such as emotional states, cognitive load of the task and psychopathology, including anxiety. Moreover, DMN seems to play a pivotal role in social cognition. For example, the ability to predict another person's behaviour taking his or her perspective modulates the activity of the DMN. Recent data from autistic patients support a role of DMN in social cognition as well. So

Addressing scabies among street children in Ethiopia: an ethnographic study of acceptable interventions by prospective recipients and deliverers.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease that affects the physical, socioeconomic, and psychological wellbeing of patients. Street children, due to poor living conditions and social marginalization, are at increased risk of infestation and face significant barriers to access healthcare services. Various interventions to control scabies have been suggested and implemented, but few have been based on the needs and viewpoints of the street children themselves. Drawing on the theoretical framework of acceptability (TFA), this article explores the interventions that street children, pa

Assessing resources for implementing a community directed intervention (CDI) strategy in delivering multiple health interventions in urban poor communities in Southwestern Nigeria: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Many simple, affordable and effective disease control measures have had limited impact due to poor access especially by the poorer populations (urban and rural) and inadequate community participation. A proven strategy to address the problem of access to health interventions is the Community Directed Interventions (CDI) approach, which has been used successfully in rural areas. This study was carried out to assess resources for the use of a CDI strategy in delivering health interventions in poorly-served urban communities in Ibadan, Nigeria. METHODS: A formative study was carried

Long-term health and socioeconomic consequences of childhood and adolescent-onset of narcolepsy.

OBJECTIVES: There is limited information about the long-term consequences of childhood- and adolescent-onset narcolepsy on educational and social factors. Here, we estimate the long-term socioeconomic consequences and health care costs of narcolepsy. METHODS: The prospective cohort study included Danish individuals with narcolepsy onset in childhood or adolescence, diagnosed between 1994 and 2015. Health care costs and socioeconomic data were obtained from nationwide administrative and health registers. One hundred seventy-one patients were compared with 680 controls (mean index age, 15.2 yea

Anticipated Psychological or Behavioral Reactions to Learning Alzheimer Biomarker Results: Associations With Contextual Factors.

BACKGROUND: As Alzheimer disease (AD) biomarker testing becomes more widely available, adults may opt to learn results. Considering potential reactions to learning biomarker results can guide prebiomarker and postbiomarker testing education and counseling programs. METHODS: Cognitively healthy adults enrolled in observational Alzheimer research responded to a telephone survey about learning AD risk information (n=334; 44% Black or African American; mean age=64.9±7.0). Multiple linear regression models tested if contextual factors predicted anticipated psychological impact (distress, stigma, a

From vision to action: a framework to assess readiness for the tobacco endgame.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco endgame strategies aim to reduce smoking prevalence to minimal levels (<5%) through measures that expand traditional tobacco control approaches. Although some countries have set endgame targets, most still report prevalence rates >15%, and practical guidance on how to assess readiness for endgame implementation remains limited. This study aims to synthetise the key determinants of jurisdictions' readiness for tobacco endgame and proposes a self-assessment tool to evaluate it. METHODS: A narrative review of peer-reviewed and grey literature published between January 2010 an

Assessing the determinants of stillbirths and early neonatal deaths using routinely collected data in an inner city area.

BACKGROUND: Within the UK there is considerable variation in the perinatal mortality rate. The objective of this study was to assess the factors associated with stillbirths and early neonatal deaths (ENND) and the suitability of the available databases in a health authority with one of the highest rates in the country. METHODS: Two case-control studies were carried out in three hospital trusts in the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority, London, using routinely collected information. In one study, 342 stillbirths and 1,368 controls were included, and in the other study, 205 ENND a

[Risk factors for dementia of the Alzheimer type].

A case-control study was conducted on 90 cases of "probable" Alzheimer's disease and 97 controls at the same age as patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type. The patients were diagnosed according to the DSM IIIR criteria. Information was obtained on birth and childhood, medical and surgical history, exposure to various social, psychological and biological factors, family history of dementia. A structured questionnaire was based on AMDP-system. Some of the variables studied reached statistical significance: first of all unfavourable factors (especially poor livelihood) taking place during t

Promotion or suppression? Does internet use by the Chinese public affect physician trust?

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the causal relationship between internet use and the level of physician trust among Chinese residents, providing rigorous empirical evidence for understanding the changes in doctor-patient relationships in the digital era. METHODS: Using four waves of panel data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) spanning 2016 to 2022, we construct a two-way fixed effects model to control for individual and time heterogeneity. We further employ propensity score matching (PSM) to alleviate sample selection bias, thereby robustly examining the relationship between i

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for primary focal hyperhidrosis: impact on psycho-social symptomatology and psychotropic medication use.

OBJECTIVES: The tendency for patients with primary focal hyperhidrosis (PFH), characterized by excessive sweating, to experience psycho-social deficits is well documented. In addition, although endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) effectively corrects PFH, its role in the psycho-social management of these patients remains unclear. Here, we examined changes in psychiatric symptomatology and psychotropic medication usage in PFH patients following ETS. METHODS: In total, 106 PFH patients underwent ETS and were compared against 213 matched controls. Information on psychiatric diagnosis and pre

Social anhedonia, but not positive schizotypy, is associated with poor affective control.

Emotion researchers have distinguished between automatic versus controlled processing of affective information. One previous study with a small sample size found that extreme levels of social anhedonia (SocAnh) in college students, which predicts future schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, is associated with problems in controlled affective processing on a primed evaluation task. The current study examined whether in a larger college student sample SocAnh but not elevated perceptual aberration/magical ideation (PerMag) was associated with poor controlled affective processing. On the primed evalua

Social anxiety disorder: a critical overview of neurocognitive research.

Social anxiety is a common disorder characterized by a persistent and excessive fear of one or more social or performance situations. Behavioral inhibition is one of the early indicators of social anxiety, which later in life may advance into a certain personality structure (low extraversion and high neuroticism) and the development of maladaptive cognitive biases. While there are several effective psycho- and pharmacotherapy options, a large number of patients benefit insufficiently from these therapies. Brain and neuroendocrine research can help uncover both the biological basis of social an

Updating emotional content in working memory: a depression-specific deficit?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Interference from irrelevant negative material might be a key mechanism underlying intrusive ruminative thoughts in depression. Considering commonalities between depression and social anxiety and the presence of similar intrusive thoughts in social anxiety, the current study was designed to assess whether interference from irrelevant material in working memory is specific to depression or is also present in social anxiety disorder. METHODS: To examine the effects of irrelevant emotional material on working memory performance, participants memorized two lists of word

Functional neuro-anatomy of social cognition in posttraumatic stress disorder: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common mental disorder following one or more traumatic events in which patients exhibit behavioural and emotional disturbances. Recent studies report alterations in social cognition with cerebral functioning modifications. While it is now established that brain function can be modified and severely altered following successive childhood traumas, less studies have focused on brain alterations in adults with normal social cognition development. METHODS: We conducted a selective literature review by querying PubMed and Embase databases for ti
