Drive with me: Utilizing car-based mobile interviews to investigate place and health.

While mobile "go-along" methods are increasingly used to understand and conceptualize the interconnections between health and place, most mobile interviews are conducted on foot. This paper investigates how mobile interviews within cars can advance knowledge of nuanced neighborhood navigation and local place-based features that influence health and well-being. The Neighborhoods and Health at All Ages Study interviewed sixty participants between August 2023 and March 2024. Living across the Minneapolis-St. Paul (MN) metropolitan area, participants were on average 42 years old (range: 23-75). 53

"He cares about me and I care about him." Children's experiences of friendship with peers who use AAC.

Typically developing children face multiple challenges in developing friendships with peers who have severe physical disabilities and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), especially when these peers experience restrictions in mobility, educational participation, physical access, and communication. In this small qualitative study, six typically developing children were interviewed about their friendships with classmates who have cerebral palsy and use AAC. Data were analyzed according to Riessman's narrative methodology (2008). Overall, participants viewed these friendships pos

Evaluating the reach and equity of public spaces in Mexico City using mobility data: the case of the Utopías in Iztapalapa.

Cities invest in social infrastructure to improve well-being, but the benefits depend on who can use these spaces and who actually does. Access is therefore not only a matter of whether people live close enough to reach a facility, but also of who travels to it and from how far. We examine this realized access using high-resolution human mobility data from Location-Based Services (LBS) for the Utopías, a network of thirteen community centers offering free recreation, culture, and care in Iztapalapa, an underserved borough of 1.8 million residents in eastern Mexico City. We combine six months o

Investigating navigational behavior of wheelchair users in an urban environment guided by a mobile geospatial assistive navigation technology.

PURPOSE: Social participation among wheelchair users depends heavily on mobility. While assistive navigation technologies like Google Maps have reshaped urban mobility, they often overlook the specific needs of wheelchair users. This study aimed to explore how wheelchair users interact with urban environments while using an assistive navigation technology and find gaps in route instructions, in order to determine the key information components required for adapted route instructions. METHODS: A mixed-methods, simultaneous quantitative-qualitative field study was conducted with nine manual whe

Trust as a key measure of quality and safety after the restriction of family contact in Canadian long-term care settings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Family caregivers in Canadian long-term care homes are estimated to provide 10 h per week of direct care to approximately 30% of residents through roles including mobility support, mealtime assistance, personal care, social interaction, psychological care, care coordination, and advocacy. Despite these contributions, they continue to be viewed as visitors rather than as key participants in the interdependent relationships that support the long-term care sector. Their marginalization was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as Canadian public health policy focused on preventing them from enter

User-centered design of a multisensory power wheelchair simulator: towards training and rehabilitation applications.

Autonomy and social inclusion can reveal themselves everyday challenges for people experiencing mobility impairments. These people can benefit from technical aids such as power wheelchairs to access mobility and overcome social exclusion. However, power wheelchair driving is a challenging task which requires good visual, cognitive and visuo-spatial abilities. Besides, a power wheelchair can cause material damage or represent a danger of injury for others or oneself if not operated safely. Therefore, training and repeated practice are mandatory to acquire safe driving skills to obtain power whe

Neuroimpairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions in children with cerebral palsy.

In a representative series of 176 children with cerebral palsy (CP), aged 5 to 8 years, associations were studied between additional neuroimpairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions in the domains of mobility, education, and social relations as proposed in the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF). Learning disability occurred in 40%, epilepsy in 35%, visual impairment in 20%, and infantile hydrocephalus in 9% of the children. Additional neuroimpairments were most frequently seen in children with tetraplegia and dystonic CP and in those w

Seasonal variation and homes: understanding the social experiences of older adults.

There has been limited research on the importance of seasons in the lives of older adults. Previous research has highlighted seasonal fluctuations in physical functioning--including limb strength, range of motion, and cardiac death--the spread of influenza in seasonal migration patterns. In addition, older adults experience isolation for various reasons, such as decline of physical and cognitive ability, lack of transportation, and lack of opportunities for social interaction. There has been much attention paid to the social isolation of older adults, yet little analysis about how the isolatio

Perceived impacts of a first wheelchair on social participation.

PURPOSE: To document perceived impacts in users' daily activities and social roles (social participation) following the acquisition of a first manual or powered wheelchair. METHODS: A qualitative design with a phenomenological approach was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted. An interview guide was developed based on the 12 social participation categories in the Disability Creation Process (DCP) conceptual model as themes underlying the questions: 'What has changed in your daily life since you got your new wheelchair?' and 'What has not changed in your daily life that you thought

Factors influencing pain intensity in knee osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional biopsychosocial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Pain is pivotal in managing knee osteoarthritis (KOA), necessitating tailored rehabilitative strategies. The biopsychosocial framework suggests that a multifaceted approach is crucial for understanding and managing pain in KOA patients. This study explored the factors that influence pain intensity through biological and psychosocial determinants from a biopsychological perspective in KOA patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 150 KOA patients with Kellgren-Lawrence (K/L) grades 2-4. Patients were classified into three groups based on their Visual Analogue Scale sco

Deep Learning-Assisted Evaluation of Laryngeal Mobility in a Rat Model.

Vocal fold mobility is essential for normal laryngeal function and is often compromised following recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) or superior laryngeal nerve injuries. In a rat model of unilateral (RLN) injury, we quantitatively evaluate laryngeal mobility using advanced computer vision techniques. Adult male Long-Evans rats underwent direct laryngoscopy before and after RLN injury at the level of the 5th tracheal ring. High-resolution video recordings were analyzed with the open-source deep learning framework Social LEAP Estimates Animal Poses (SLEAP) to track key laryngeal landmarks. The dis

Development of an intraoral device for social inclusion of a physically disabled patient.

The aim of this study is to describe the use of an intraoral assistive technology for a patient with idiopathic generalized muscular dystonia, presenting temporomandibular disorder and severe anterior tooth mobility and diastema. A multidisciplinary team developed an intraoral device to provide typing and painting functions, and promote relaxation of masticatory muscles without compromising the teeth and supporting tissue structures. The occlusal splint associated with the device promoted muscle relaxation and relief of the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction, in this case with

Sustained use of compensatory technology following brain injury: experiences from Neumind users.

Assistive technology for cognition (ATC), particularly smartphone-based apps, can significantly enhance rehabilitation outcomes for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). Despite demonstrated efficacy, challenges persist in initial uptake and long-term engagement with such technologies. This study employed a mixed-methods approach to examine factors influencing sustained engagement with the Neumind app over 13-14 months among individuals with ABI. Twelve adult participants were interviewed, and their app usage data was quantitatively analysed over nine months post-interview. Eleven part

Problematic Social Media Use Among Italian Midadolescents: Protocol and Rationale of the SMART Project.

BACKGROUND: Social media (SM) use constitutes a large portion of midadolescents' daily lives as a way of peer interaction. A significant percentage of adolescents experience intense or problematic social media use (PSMU), an etiologically complex behavior potentially associated with psychological distress. To date, studies longitudinally testing for risk or protective factors of PSMU, and collecting qualitative data are still scarce among midadolescents. Self-help interventions specifically targeting PSMU in this population and involving midadolescents in co-creation are needed. OBJECTIVE: Th

Findings from Encontros: a multilevel STI/HIV intervention to increase condom use, reduce STI, and change the social environment among sex workers in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI)/HIV prevention programs, which do not modify social structural contexts that contribute to risk of STI/HIV may fail to bring about improvements in health, particularly among groups who experience discrimination and exclusion from public life. We conducted a multilevel intervention with sex workers, including improved clinical care and community-mobilizing strategies to modify social structural factors that shape sexual behavior, to improve condom use and reduce incident STI. METHODS: We followed 420 sex workers participating in the Encontros in
