BACKGROUND: Civil unrest related to political change can have detrimental effects on the mental health of the population. This study investigated probable Adjustment Disorder (AjD) among individuals with different attitudes in the context of a highly controversial judicial reform in Israel. The relationships between AjD symptoms across three groups were explored: those who support the proposed changes, others who oppose them, and those who adopt a neutral stance.
METHODS: This study was conducted with a nationally representative sample of Israeli adults (n = 1999). A Symptoms Network analysis

The term diagnostic odyssey refers to patients' difficult journeys to obtain a diagnosis, particular in the case of rare or contested illnesses. This paper describes the diagnostic odyssey of patients with New Daily Persistent Headache (NDPH), a rare headache disorder notable for its persistence, resistance to treatment, and impact on quality of life. Studies conducted to date have taken a medical perspective focusing on characterizing NDPH as opposed to patient construction of the illness experience. This study fills that gap by analyzing 17 semi-structured interviews with participants with N

Our social activity is heavily influenced by the process of introspection, with emerging research suggesting a role for the Default Mode Network (DMN) in social cognition. We hypothesize that oxytocin, a neuropeptide with an important role in social behaviour, can effectively alter the connectivity of the DMN. We test this hypothesis using a randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled trial where 15 healthy male participants received 24 IU oxytocin or placebo prior to a resting-state functional MRI scan. We used Granger Causality Analysis for the first time to probe the role of oxy

Risk factors for institutionalization of frail elderly have been studied but the role of nutritional status has not been addressed. A prospective cohort of 288 frail elderly (81 male; 207 female; mean age: 78.2 +/- 7.6 years) were recruited from the current list of those receiving home help services and followed for 3-5 years. At baseline, height, weight, and arm muscle circumference were measured. Self-reported weight loss prior to baseline, energy, and protein intake were recorded. Covariates included sociodemographic factors, social network variables, functional and health status. Cox's mul

This study evaluated the psychometric performance of the 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) in an archived South African recidivist sample. Data from 385 respondents were examined using item descriptives, corrected item-total correlations, confirmatory factor analysis, internal-consistency estimates, exploratory network analysis, and post hoc reduced-item sensitivity models; the network analysis used 327 complete cases. Among the full-scale models, the correlated four-factor model showed the best relative fit, chi-square(344) = 543.81, CFI = .944, TLI = .939, RMSEA = .042, and SRMR

BACKGROUND: Technology-based interventions (TBIs) are a useful approach when attempting to provide therapy to more patients with psychosis.
METHODS: Randomized controlled trials of outcomes of TBIs v. face-to-face interventions in psychosis were identified in a systematic search conducted in PubMed/Ovid MEDLINE. Data were extracted independently by two researchers, and standardized mean changes were pooled using a three-level model and network meta-analysis.
RESULTS: Fifty-eight studies were included. TBIs complementing treatment as usual (TAU) were generally superior to face-to-face interve

Syndemics, or comorbid and mutually reinforcing psychosocial problems, are associated with increased HIV risk among men who have sex with men (MSM). Although the dynamic interplay among syndemic indicators is theorized to be crucial for increasing risk of HIV acquisition, novel approaches are needed to understand how these syndemic problems interrelate. This study examined the associations between nine self-reported syndemic indicators in 194 MSM at high risk of HIV acquisition. We compared exploratory factor analyses (EFA) to a network analysis. In the present study, network analysis consiste

This study focuses on AI-based quantification of socioeconomic disparities within society. Specifically, we investigate whether embeddings derived from a recurrent neural network (RNN), trained on the features of a deprivation index, capture more information on deprivation than traditional expert-based indices. Using the German Index of Socioeconomic Deprivation (GISD) as a benchmark, predictive performance is evaluated through survival analyses in three independent cancer cohorts. RNN embeddings consistently outperformed the GISD score. The largest improvement in overall survival prediction w

Sociodemographic factors have long been associated with disparities in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Studies that identified spatial clustering of cases have suggested the importance of information about ASD moving through social networks of parents. Yet there is no direct evidence of this mechanism. This study explores the help-seeking behaviors and referral pathways of parents of diagnosed children in Costa Rica, one of two countries in which spatial clusters of cases have been identified. We interviewed the parents of 54 diagnosed children and focused on social network connectio

The hypothalamus plays a crucial role in the modulation of social behavior by encoding internal states. The hypothalamic hypocretin/orexin neurons, initially identified as regulators of sleep and appetite, are important for emotional and motivated behaviors. However, their role in social behavior remains unclear. Using fiber photometry and behavioral analysis, we show here that hypocretin neurons differentially encode social discrimination based on the nature of social encounters. The optogenetic inhibition of hypocretin neuron activity or blocking of hcrt-1 receptors reduces the amount of tim

Effective HIV prevention requires knowledge of the structure and dynamics of the social networks across which infections are transmitted. These networks most commonly comprise chains of sexual relationships, but in some populations, sharing of contaminated needles is also an important, or even the main mechanism that connects people in the network. Whereas network data have long been collected during survey interviews, new data sources have become increasingly common in recent years, because of advances in molecular biology and the use of partner notification services in HIV prevention and tre

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) and depression are highly comorbid and linked to higher rates of death and disability. Several evidence-based treatments for depression have been successfully implemented in low- and middle-income countries, but more knowledge is needed on how to bring these innovations to scale within complex 'real world' public health systems.
OBJECTIVE: To explore whether the principles of social network analysis could be used to enhance receptivity to integrating depression treatment into primary care for individuals with and without TB in Brazil.
METHODS: We used existing s…

In this Review we critically evaluate the empirical literature investigating the effect of paediatric brain tumours and their treatment on social affective function. We focus specifically on relations between social affective function and compromised brain structure and function associated with treatment for a paediatric brain tumour. We concentrate on emotion recognition and regulation, because these are core components of social affective function. First, we provide an overview of the literature in typically developing children and discuss the underlying brain networks thought to subserve em

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aims were: (1) to identify methodological problems that may explain the inconsistencies and contradictions in the research evidence on social support and health, and (2) to validate a frequently used measure of social support in order to determine whether or not it could be used in multivariate analyses of population data in research on social support and health.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Secondary analysis of data collected in a cross sectional survey of a multistage cluster sample of the population of the United States, designed to study relationships in behavioural, social s

This study aimed to explore the age-specific characteristics and research trends of Behavioral Activation (BA) interventions through a Keyword Network Analysis (KNA). A comprehensive review of experimental studies applying BA was conducted, covering literature published between 2003 and 2023. Keywords were extracted by age group children and adolescents, adults, and older adults and analyzed using network metrics and cohesive structure evaluation. BA interventions were consistently associated with reductions in depression and anxiety symptoms and improvements in quality of life across all age

Against the backdrop of rapid digital technology development, the impact of parental phubbing on adolescents' physical and mental health has garnered increasing attention. Grounded in the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theoretical model, this study examines the statistical associations linking parental phubbing to adolescents' anxiety levels and participation in physical activity. Data were collected from 550 middle school students using the Parental Phubbing Scale (PPS), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), the Social Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (SAD-7), and the Physical Activity Rating

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is thought to influence the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). However, little is known about how, specifically, anxiety influences ED symptoms and vice versa. Network analysis identifies how symptoms within and across disorders are interconnected. In a network, central nodes (i.e., symptoms) have the strongest relations to other nodes and are thought to maintain psychopathology. Bridge nodes are symptoms in one diagnostic cluster that are strongly connected to symptoms in another diagnostic cluster and are thought to explain comorbidity. We identified ce

BACKGROUND: Cancer prognosis and survival are determined not only by biological and clinical factors, but also by patients' social environments. Social vulnerability, including socioeconomic deprivation, limited education, weak social networks, and social exclusion, can critically influence diagnosis, treatment adherence, and outcomes. This scoping review aims to synthesize the current evidence on the impact of social vulnerability and exclusion on cancer outcomes, comprising prognosis, survival, quality of life, and related psychosocial factors.
