Family social environment in childhood and self-rated health in young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Family social support, as a form of social capital, contributes to social health disparities at different age of life. In a life-course epidemiological perspective, the aims of our study were to examine the association between self-reported family social environment during childhood and self-reported health in young adulthood and to assess the role of family functioning during childhood as a potential mediating factor in explaining the association between family breakup in childhood and self-reported health in young adulthood. METHODS: We analyzed data from the first wave of the H

Negative and positive mental health characteristics of affected family members: Findings from a cross-sectional Australian general population gambling study.

Despite the impact of problem gambling on affected family members (AFMs), there are limited large-scale population level studies identifying the negative mental health (NMH) and positive mental health (PMH) characteristics of AFMs. Furthermore, no study has explored whether PMH characteristics are protective in the relationships between AFM status and NMH characteristics. This study involved secondary data analysis from the Third Social and Economic Impact Study of Gambling in Tasmania. Using a subsample of 1,869 adults (48.30 % male; meanage = 48.48; 4.67 % AFMs), this study aimed to explore

Social resources and alcohol-related losses as predictors of help seeking among male problem drinkers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether factors other than severity of alcohol-related problems add to the explanation of seeking help for drinking problems. METHOD: Help seeking was investigated by comparing male problem drinkers who applied for treatment with male chronic problem drinkers in the general population. Subjects were selected from an outpatient treatment center (n = 129) and from a panel of the general population (n = 86) in the Netherlands. A shortened version of Cahalan's problem-drinking index, including symptoms, social consequences, health problems and frequency of intoxicat

Association of social vulnerability with access to treatment in ovarian cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: To understand disparities in access to treatment for ovarian cancer patients. METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who had surgery for ovarian cancer at a comprehensive cancer center from 2018 to 2024 was completed. Social Vulnerability index quartiles generated by patients' zip codes were used as measures of social vulnerability. Social vulnerability encompasses four themes, including socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial/ethnic minority status, and housing type and transportation. The primary outcome was time to treatment initiation. Secondary outcomes i

Mental health and social support among public safety personnel.

BACKGROUND: Social support may be a protective factor for the mental health of public safety personnel (PSP), who are frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events and report substantial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms. Research examining perceived social support and its association with PTSD and MDD in different PSP categories (e.g. firefighters, paramedics) is limited. AIMS: To examine differences in perceived social support across PSP and determine whether perceived social support is associated with differences in rate

Disparities in Vaccination Amongst Socially Vulnerable Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) have a known impact on disparities in vaccination. Despite an increased risk for infection in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), SDOH and vaccination in this population have not been studied. Using census tract-level data from the Centers for Disease Control's social vulnerability index (SVI), we aimed to understand the relationship between SDOH and adherence to guideline-recommended vaccinations in patients with IBD. METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort of patients with IBD was used to geocode patient addresses to their

Frailty Assessment and Its Impact on Loneliness among Older Adults Receiving Home-Based Healthcare during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of frailty on loneliness among older adults receiving home care, in correlation to their socioeconomic and homebound statuses. This cross-sectional study recruited 218 individuals aged ≥65 years receiving home-based health services from the "Help at Home" program in the Region of Evrytania, Greece through an open invitation from the municipality authorities from March to June 2022. The Tilburg Frailty Indicator (TFI) was used for the evaluation of frailty, the UCLA Loneliness Scale version 3 was used for loneliness, and social isolation was

Intersecting Burdens: Pain and Psychosocial Stressors in Women with HIV and Type 2 Diabetes - Insights from the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: HIV has transitioned into a chronic condition often accompanied by multimorbidity, including type 2 diabetes (T2D). Women with HIV (WWH) and T2D face elevated risks for depression, loneliness, and reduced social support. Pain-a common and burdensome symptom in both conditions-remains underexamined despite its potential to exacerbate psychosocial challenges and diminish quality of life. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS), focusing on the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) subset. Self-reported measures in

The psychosocial vulnerability model of hostility as a predictor of coronary heart disease in low-income African Americans.

The current study examined social support and stress as mediators of the hostility-coronary heart disease (CHD) relationship as suggested by the psychosocial vulnerability model in a sample of low-income African Americans. Among 95 CHD patients and 30 healthy controls, hostility was negatively correlated with social support, but was not related to minor stress. CHD patients endorsed higher levels of hostility; however, the relationship between hostility and CHD status was diminished once stress and social support were included in the model. This study lends partial support for the psychosocial

Older women and poverty.

The popular perception of the financially secure economic status of elders, referred to as the "greening of the aged," does not reflect the reality faced by many older women. Older women's economic positions depend largely on marital status. Women who are widowed and other women living alone are among the most poor. Cuts in Social Security benefits, viewed by some policymakers as a possible solution to the problem of the federal budget deficit, would exacerbate the poverty of older women who rely on Social Security as their main source of income. Social workers concerned with poverty among old

Social media use and mental health indicators among US adolescents: A population-based study.

Social media use among young people has raised concerns about its potential impact on mental health. However, research is limited regarding whether certain subgroups may be differently affected. This study uses data from the 2022 National Youth Tobacco Survey, a nationally representative sample of middle and high school students aged approximately 11-18 years (n = 23,366). Mental health conditions were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, and social media use was categorized by frequency levels. We employed multinomial logistic regression and a finite mixture Poisson model to exp

Distilling Heterogeneity among Children with Disruptive Behavior: Associations between Symptom Patterns and Social Functioning.

Children with disruptive behavior (DB) are a heterogeneous group who exhibit several characteristics that may contribute to poor social functioning. The present study identified profiles of reactive aggression, proactive aggression, callous-unemotional (CU) traits, and prosocial behavior in a sample of children with DB. Associations with social functioning (social interaction, social status) were then examined, along with sex differences in profile membership. Parent ratings of 304 clinic-referred children ages 6-12 years with DB were analyzed using latent profile analysis. Five profiles were …

A battery of olfactory-based screens for phenotyping the social and sexual behaviors of mice.

We provide a battery of screens that reflect the social and sexual behavior displayed by both captive and feral mice. Some screens focus on measuring aspects of chemical communication, providing information about whether or not mice will interact and if they do so, predict the nature of the interaction. Other screens measure direct interactions between target mice and same- and opposite-sex conspecifics, providing an indication of the social status and sexual responsiveness, respectively, of target mice. The battery of screens yields a high-throughput bioassay of a mouse's relative social stat…

Financial Status and Well-being in Recently Separated Military Veterans.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans transitioning from military service to civilian life manage numerous changes simultaneously, in health, employment, social relationships, and finances. Financial problems may impact financial well-being as well as adjustment to civilian life in general; yet, research on Veterans' financial challenges remains limited. This study examined six indicators of perceived financial status among newly transitioned Veterans over a period of 3 years and then examined perceived financial well-being measured in two domains-satisfaction and functioning-and difficulty adjusting to civi

Loneliness, social support, social isolation and wellbeing among working age adults with and without disability: Cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is significantly related to health and wellbeing. However, there is little information on the prevalence of loneliness among people with disability or the association between disability, loneliness and wellbeing. OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: For a nationally representative sample of adults (age 16-64) with/without disability, to examine exposure to three indicators of low social connectedness (loneliness, low perceived social support, social isolation), and to evaluate the association between low social connectedness and wellbeing. To test whether disability status moderated t

Oral health of adolescents in West Africa: prioritizing its social determinants.

Oral health is a major public health issue in West Africa, yet it has gotten little attention. Individual and group disparities in health status are influenced by social determinants of health (SDH), which also affect oral health. Adolescence is a significant transition into adulthood, a time when the SDH can contribute to lifelong health status. This article explored the SDH associated with oral health behaviour, perception, and oral health development amongst adolescents in West Africa. This article engaged articles published in peer-reviewed journals relating to adolescents' oral health and

Women and Incarceration: Introducing a Gendered Lens into Smart Decarceration.

Given the scope of mass incarceration, it is quite appropriate that promote smart decarceration (PSD) has been identified as one of the 13 Grand Challenges for Social Work. The aims of PSD are both ambitious and critical but do not address women explicitly. The authors argue that PSD should incorporate a gendered lens because a gender-responsive framework is critical for these three reasons: (1) women's pathways to incarceration are different than men's and are shaped by their social status and multiple forms of marginalization based on race, socioeconomic status, gender, and other factors; (2…

Neural and psychological predictors of digital status-seeking in adolescence.

While social media affords youths the opportunity to enhance their online status via the accumulation of likes, followers, and other quantifiable metrics, not all youths engage in digital status-seeking. Individual differences in adolescents' neural sensitivity to low popular peers and social motivations may help explain why some youth engage more strongly in digital status-seeking than others. We examined how adolescents' social motivation such as their need for approval (NFA; approach & avoidance) moderate the links between neural sensitivity to low popular peers in the ventral striatum (VS)
