Recommendations for a core outcome measurement set for clinical trials in whiplash associated disorders.

Inconsistent reporting of outcomes in clinical trials of treatments for whiplash associated disorders (WAD) hinders effective data pooling and conclusions about treatment effectiveness. A multidisciplinary International Steering Committee recently recommended 6 core outcome domains: Physical Functioning, Perceived Recovery, Work and Social Functioning, Psychological Functioning, Quality of Life and Pain. This study aimed to reach consensus and recommend a core outcome set (COS) representing each of the 6 domains. Forty-three patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were identified for Physica

Fertility and pregnancy knowledge and expectations among women with a history of metabolic bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Women of reproductive age represent a significant proportion of metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) patients. However, research on their knowledge and perspectives regarding fertility and pregnancy post-MBS is scarce. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed to comprehensively capture women's perspectives on pregnancy after MBS. To ensure content validity, the survey was assessed by health care experts using content validity indices and through semi-structured patient interviews. The cross-sectional survey was then distributed via social media platforms. Responses from women aged 18-4

Epidemiological Assessment and Inference in Race-Based Clinical Algorithms: A Narrative Review and Health Policy Analysis Focused on Living Kidney Donation.

BACKGROUND: Minoritized racial and ethnic groups in the United States face long-standing disparities in a variety of health outcomes, owing to inequitable distribution of social and structural determinants of health along racial and ethnic lines. Although the existence of such disparities has long been a topic of scientific inquiry, there has been a dearth of investigations regarding their underlying mechanisms and potential remedies. This presents a challenge to those creating evidence-based and equity-focused health policy. METHODS: We conducted an evidence-based, equity-focused narrative r

Care staff perceptions of challenging behaviour and fear of assault.

BACKGROUND: Past research has determined that fear of violence is often "irrational" in relation to the actual level of risk presented. This has been found to exacerbate the negative effects of exposure to work-related violence. AIMS: This study investigates fear of assault in relation to exposure to challenging behaviour. The extent to which a social psychological model of fear of assault can be generalised to care staff working with individuals with intellectual disability (ID) was tested and the validity of the instruments used was assessed. METHOD: A total of 87 care staff took part in a

Measurement validity: essential in principle, subordinated in practice.

Quality-of-life and health outcomes research relies on assessment instruments, such as self-report surveys and patient-reported outcome measures, to assess respondents' standing on latent psychological attributes and experiences, such as pain, fatigue, stress, emotional well-being, social participation, and perceived quality of life. Unlike physiological measures, which record bodily states through calibrated procedures, these instruments are used to infer respondents' standing on these attributes through respondents' interpretations of items, response options, and lived experience. Examining the role of community resilience and social capital on mental health in public health emergency and disaster response: a scoping review.

The ability of the public to remain psychologically resilient in the face of public health emergencies and disasters (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) is a key factor in the effectiveness of a national response to such events. Community resilience and social capital are often perceived as beneficial and ensuring that a community is socially and psychologically resilient may aid emergency response and recovery. This review presents a synthesis of literature which answers the following research questions: How are community resilience and social capital quantified in research?; What is the impact o

Development, Spanish Normative Data, and Validation of a Social Cognition Battery in Prodromal Alzheimer's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: The assessment of social cognition changes may be challenging, especially in the earliest stages of some neurodegenerative diseases. Our objective was to validate a social cognition battery from a multidomain perspective. In this regard, we aimed to adapt several tests, collect normative data, and validate them in prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). METHODS: A total of 92 healthy controls, 25 prodromal AD, and 39 MS patients were enrolled. Age-, gender-, and education-matched control groups were created for comparisons. Social cognition battery was comp

Higher earnings, bursting trains and exhausted bodies: the creation of travelling psychosis in post-reform China.

This paper examines the biomedical construction of "travelling psychosis" (TP), a contested psychiatric diagnosis pertaining to a severe mental disturbance that occurs among migrant workers who travel long distance in China's overcrowded trains. Although TP can produce substantial psychiatric morbidity, it is also a socially constructed entity that serves social uses. By subscribing to a ritualistic model of validation and by invoking the rhetoric of scientific authority, Chinese psychiatrists who created TP have been able to accomplish such goals as legitimating its forensic function, securin

Recommended measurement protocols for sickle cell disease in the PhenX toolkit: psychosocial factors and social determinants of health.

OBJECTIVES: Consensus Measures for Phenotypes and eXposures (PhenX) Toolkit (https://www.phenxtoolkit.org/) is a web-based catalog of recommended measurement protocols and associated bioinformatics tools to assist with study design and facilitate cross-study data integration and analyses. Before February 2023 (v.44), protocols specific to sickle cell disease did not address key psychosocial factors or social determinants of health that impact care and outcomes. This paper describes the protocol selection process and final recommendations to address this limitation. METHODS: To identify protoc

Rapid Review of the Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) Shows It Can Detect Behavioural Changes in Social Communication in Autism.

Reliable measurement of social communication change remains a major challenge in autism research. The Brief Observation of Social Communication Change (BOSCC) was developed to detect subtle changes in communication. This rapid review synthesised current evidence on the BOSCC's responsiveness, validity, and suitability as a clinical trial endpoint. Systematic searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science identified 19 eligible studies (n = 789). Within-group meta-analyses estimated pre-post standardised mean change (Hedges' g) for BOSCC and ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedul

Measuring the impact of onychomycosis on patient quality of life.

According to survey research, onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the toenail or fingernail, affects quality of life including physical and social functioning and emotional health. We developed an onychomycosis disease-specific questionnaire (ODSQ) that sensitively assessed symptom distress, functional impact, and social stigma associated with the disease. Samples of patients enrolled in a randomized controlled clinical trial were used for the psychometric evaluations. The multi-item scales were internally consistent (alpha > or = 0.80) and reproducible (ICC > 0.85). Interscale correlations b

Right hemispheric dysfunction in nonverbal learning disabilities: social, academic, and adaptive functioning in adults and children.

This review addresses recent research on social and nonverbal learning disabilities. Involvement of right hemispheric dysfunction in these disabilities has been hypothesized, as studies with adults have suggested that documented right hemisphere damage may lead to deficits in social skills, prosody, spatial orientation, problem solving, and recognition of nonverbal cues. Studies of children purported to evidence nonverbal learning disabilities are reviewed and compared with the results from studies of adults with right hemisphere damage. Specific subtypes of nonverbal learning disabilities are

Psychometric Evaluation of the Revised Suicide Crisis Inventory (SCI-2) in Germany: Factor Structure, Reliability, and Validity in an Online and Outpatient Sample.

BACKGROUND: The suicide crisis syndrome (SCS) is considered a cognitive and affective state preceding a suicide attempt. Previous studies have demonstrated its predictive validity and have shown it to be a uniform disorder entity in various countries worldwide; however, research in Europe remains limited. The aim of this study was therefore to contribute to a cross-cultural perspective on the SCS and to examine its factor structure, reliability, and validity in Germany. METHODS: Data of N = 1157 participants were collected between October 2022 and December 2024 cross-sectionally from a German

Steroid Phobia: Is There a Basis? A Review of Topical Steroid Safety, Addiction and Withdrawal.

There is a growing concern amongst patients about topical corticosteroid (TCS) side effects, with increasing discussion of topical steroid addiction (TSA) and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) particularly on social media platforms. However, the acceptance of TSA/TSW as a distinct condition remains controversial within the dermatological community. We conducted a literature search using PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Embase and Web of Science to identify original articles addressing TSA/TSW. We described the definition and reported clinical features of TSA/TSW including its
