Filling in the gaps: A geospatial approach to optimizing placement of methadone clinics in Massachusetts.

INTRODUCTION: Methadone treatment dispensed at opioid treatment programs (OTPs) reduces the risk of fatal opioid-related overdose. Access to … del by how many ORIs or decedent residences they could serve as the nearest OTP. We calculated mean Social Vulnerability Index scores, population density, fatal opioid-related overdose rates, and ORI rates for census tracts within a 30-minute walk of each suggested site. We also ran supplementary location-allocation analyses that ignored the locations of existing OTPs …

Promoting health equity through social capital in deprived communities: a natural policy experiment in Trieste, Italy.

The Trieste Habitat Micro-area Programme (HMP), an innovative social-health service policy, has offered a natural experiment to empirically evaluate the social mechanisms through which social capital may have an impact on health inequalities. To date, literature clarifying this causal chain is scanty. This empirical study tested the following hypotheses: H1) innovative social-health practices can activate social mechanisms intentionally and systematically so as to generate social capital; H2) such social mechanisms increase specific properties of social capital, in particular those influencing

Is there really a schizophrenia? The long-term course of psychotic phenomena.

The author fundamentally questions the traditional concept of the disease-entity (or several disease entities) of 'schizophrenia' and discusses an alternative concept, based on vulnerability and information-processing. According to this, schizophrenia-like psychotic phenomena develop in three phases. In the first, premorbid phase, combined biological (genetic and possibly other organic) and psycho-social influences lead to a premorbid 'vulnerability', characterised by a low tolerance of cognitive and emotional stress, corresponding to an insufficient capacity for the adequate processing of com

Reflections of Resilience and Vulnerability of Adolescents Living with HIV During COVID-19: A Photovoice Study in Peri-Urban Cape Town, South Africa.

Background: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in low socio-economic contexts face challenges related to physical development and health, stigma, and economic instability. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these vulnerabilities, impacting the physical, mental, and social well-being of ALHIV. ALHIV were positioned in a particularly precarious situation, requiring them to navigate the disruptions caused by the pandemic while simultaneously striving to maintain resilience and adherence to their antiretroviral treatment (ART). Objectives: To explore the resilience and vulnerability o

Ontogeny of schooling behavior and stage-specific vulnerability to valproic acid in Xenopus laevis larvae.

Perinatal exposure to chemicals such as valproic acid (VPA) increases the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Because maternal drug metabolism complicates the assessment of fetal impacts in mammalian models, Xenopus laevis tadpoles have emerged as an effective alternative for neurotoxicology. Tadpoles exhibit "schooling," a polarized social aggregation behavior. Previous studies, which exposed tadpoles to VPA continuously from stage NF42 to NF49, suggested that VPA-induced social behavior abnormalities are triggered during this period. In this study,

Social stress during adolescence activates long-term microglia inflammation insult in reward processing nuclei.

The experience of social stress during adolescence is associated with higher vulnerability to drug use. Increases in the acquisition of cocaine self-administration, in the escalation of cocaine-seeking behavior, and in the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine have been observed in rodents exposed to repeated social defeat (RSD). In addition, prolonged or severe stress induces a proinflammatory state with microglial activation and increased cytokine production. The aim of the present work was to describe the long-term effects induced by RSD during adolescence on the neuroinflammatory respon

Social frailty as a predictor of mortality among older adults in four Colombian departments: evidence from the SABE survey.

BACKGROUND: Social frailty, defined as a decline in social resources and participation, has emerged as a critical yet underrecognized dimens … ity among older adults in this Colombian regional cohort. These findings suggest that incorporating social vulnerability measures into geriatric assessment may improve risk stratification and help identify individuals who could benefit from supportive interventions.

Multi-system aging vulnerability associated with prolonged violence exposure: evidence from a Colombian sample.

Exposure to violence is a major social determinant that can influence aging trajectories and brain health. In Colombia, a country affected by decades of armed conflict, comprehensive assessment models are needed to capture the multiple factors that shape health and may accelerate aging. This study examined whether long-term exposure to violence is associated with greater multisystem aging vulnerability across cognitive, mental health, social, and neuroendocrine domains in a Colombian cohort. Fifty participants were included: 31 victims of armed conflict (VAC-COL) and 19 control participants, m

Community-Based Screening for Unmet Social Needs and Kidney Disease Risk Factors: Findings from the DECK Pilot Observational Study.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) significantly influence the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in underserved populations. The Designing Equitable Care for Kidneys (DECK) study examined the relationship between CKD risk and unmet SDOH in Richmond, Virginia's East End, a historically redlined area with high social vulnerability. Among 61 participants, CKD awareness was moderate (mean score = 71%), and 36% recognized the disease as preventable. Substantial unmet social needs were reported in financial and social domains. Stratified analysis revealed nuanced associations betw…

Environmental enrichment reverses proulcerogenic action of social isolation on the gastric mucosa and positively influences pain sensitivity and work capacity.

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of rat housing conditions-standard conditions, social isolation, environmental enrichment-and the subsequent reversal of these conditions on the vulnerability of the gastric mucosa to ulcerogenic stimuli, somatic pain sensitivity, and treadmill work capacity. Rats, aged 30 days, were placed in standard conditions (SC), social isolation (Is), and environmental enrichment (EE) for 4 weeks. Then half of each group underwent a reversal of housing conditions: SC rats were moved to Is, Is rats were placed in EE, EE rats were moved to Is, for 2 week

Premorbid teacher-rated social functioning predicts adult schizophrenia-spectrum disorder: a high-risk prospective investigation.

Social functioning deficits are a core component of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and may emerge years prior to the onset of diagnosable illness. The current study prospectively examines the relation between teacher-rated childhood social dysfunction and later mental illness among participants who were at genetic high-risk for schizophrenia and controls (n=244). The teacher-rated social functioning scale significantly predicted psychiatric outcomes (schizophrenia-spectrum vs. other psychiatric disorder vs. no mental illness). Poor premorbid social functioning appears to constitute a marker

Assessing Environmental Justice in Mexico: How Polluting Industries and Healthcare Disparities Impact Congenital Heart Defects.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most prevalent birth defects globally and the second leading cause of death in Mexican children under five. This study examines how industrial activity and social vulnerabilities independently and jointly influence CHD incidence across 2446 Mexican municipalities from 2008 to 2019. METHODS: Using negative binomial regression models, we evaluated associations between polluting industries, healthcare access, and CHD incidence. We analyzed these factors independently, jointly, and through interaction terms to assess potential effect modificatio

Descriptive and injunctive network norms associated with nonmedical use of prescription drugs among homeless youth.

BACKGROUND: Nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) among youth and young adults is being increasingly recognized as a significant public health problem. Homeless youth in particular are more likely to engage in NMUPD compared to housed youth. Studies suggest that network norms are strongly associated with a range of substance use behaviors. However, evidence regarding the association between network norms and NMUPD is scarce. We sought to understand whether social network norms of NMUPD are associated with engagement in NMUPD among homeless youth. METHODS: 1046 homeless youth were recru

Sex Differences in the Adverse Electromechanical Remodeling of the Heart After Repeated Witness Stress in Adult Rats: Relationship With a Specific miRNA Signature.

OBJECTIVE: Sex disparities in the association between psychosocial stress and cardiovascular risk have been reported, yet the extent to which social stress impacts cardiovascular function in a sex-specific manner remains unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate sex differences in the electromechanical remodeling of the heart of socially stressed rats, and to explore potential epigenetic mechanisms (cardiac microRNAs). METHODS: Adult wild-type Groningen rats of both sexes vicariously experienced the social defeat bout between 2 males for 9 consecutive days ["witness stress" (W

Serosurvey of Trypanosoma cruzi in persons experiencing homelessness and shelter workers of Brazil.

Although Chagas disease, caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, has been associated with social vulnerability worldwide, producing disability and mortality, no study to date has assessed this protozoal infection in persons experiencing homelessness. Accordingly, the present study aimed to assess anti-T. cruzi antibodies by Wiener Chagatest ELISA recombinant v.3.0 in serum samples of persons experiencing homelessness and related shelter workers in São Paulo, a city with reported vectors but no recent autochthonous case report. Overall, seropositivity to T. cruzi resulted in three of 203 (1.5%) persons ex…
