Computed tomography in the evaluation of the suspected carcinomatous prostate.

Twenty-six patients with physical findings suspicious for prostatic cancer were examined by contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) of the prostate region prior to prostatic biopsy of resection. Twelve had benign hypertrophy and/or prostatitis and fourteen had adenocarcinoma. Prostatic contour, density, seminal vesicle "angle," extraprostatic soft tissue "mass," and the pelvic fat planes were evaluated. A nodular prostatic contour was found only in patients with adenocarcinoma of the prostate, indicating a role for CT in the diagnosis of this disease. Two patients with benign prostatic dise

Advantages of soft subdural implants for the delivery of electrochemical neuromodulation therapies to the spinal cord.

OBJECTIVE: We recently developed soft neural interfaces enabling the delivery of electrical and chemical stimulation to the spinal cord. These stimulations restored locomotion in animal models of paralysis. Soft interfaces can be placed either below or above the dura mater. Theoretically, the subdural location combines many advantages, including increased selectivity of electrical stimulation, lower stimulation thresholds, and targeted chemical stimulation through local drug delivery. However, these advantages have not been documented, nor have their functional impact been studied in silico or

In-Transit Metastasis in a Dog with High-Grade Soft Tissue Sarcoma: A Case Report.

A 6 yr old male castrated American Staffordshire terrier was referred for a nonhealing wound at the site of a previously incompletely excised, high-grade soft tissue sarcoma. Physical examination revealed right popliteal lymphadenopathy and a fungating mass of the right pelvic limb at the level of the hock. Thoracic and abdominal computed tomography revealed mild lymphadenopathy of multiple iliac and inguinal lymph nodes. Right pelvic limb amputation and inguinal lymphadenectomy were performed. Histopathology was consistent of a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma with diffuse spread through the ly

Biomechanical duality of fracture healing captured using virtual mechanical testing and validated in ovine bones.

Bone fractures commonly repair by forming a bridging structure called callus, which begins as soft tissue and gradually ossifies to restore rigidity to the bone. Virtual mechanical testing is a promising technique for image-based assessment of structural bone healing in both preclinical and clinical settings, but its accuracy depends on the validity of the material model used to assign tissue mechanical properties. The goal of this study was to develop a constitutive model for callus that captures the heterogeneity and biomechanical duality of the callus, which contains both soft tissue and wo

A Soft-Inflatable Exosuit for Knee Rehabilitation: Assisting Swing Phase During Walking.

In this paper, we present a soft-inflatable exosuit to assist knee extension during gait training for stroke rehabilitation. The soft exosuit is designed to provide 25% of the knee moment required during the swing phase of the gait cycle and is integrated with inertial measurement units (IMUs) and smart shoe insole sensors to improve gait phase detection and controller design. The stiffness of the knee joint during level walking is computed using inverse dynamics. The soft-inflatable actuators, with an I cross-section, are mechanically characterized at varying angles to enable generation of th

Performance of the round window soft coupler for the backward stimulation of the cochlea in a temporal bone model.

The round window vibroplasty is a feasible option for the treatment of conductive, sensorineural and mixed hearing loss. Although clinical data suggest a satisfying clinical outcome with various coupling methods, the most efficient coupling technique of the floating mass transducer to the round window is still a matter of debate. For this, a soft silicone-made coupler has been developed recently that aims to ease and optimize the stimulation of the round window membrane of this middle ear implant. We performed a temporal bone study evaluating the performance of the soft coupler compared to the

Osteosarcoma of the orbit associated with Paget disease.

Osteosarcoma is a common primary bone malignancy most often involving the long bones and occurring in the second decade of life. Orbital involvement in this disease process is rare and is usually due to extension of the tumor from an adjacent sinus cavity. Orbital osteosarcoma arising from preexisting Paget disease is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 78-year-old female patient with Paget disease of the forehead who presented with rapidly increasing bilateral proptosis and visual loss for several months. Examination showed bilateral aphakia, decreased motility, proptosis with resistanc

Primary Dedifferentiated Duodenal Liposarcoma With Gastric Outlet Obstruction: A Rare Small Bowel Tumor.

Liposarcoma is the most prevalent malignant soft tissue tumor and is primarily found in extremities and retroperitoneum, but its occurrence within abdominal viscera is rare. Most of these cases have been reported in the esophagus and stomach. Among liposarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract, primary duodenal liposarcomas are exceptionally rare, with only five documented cases in the literature. We describe a case of a 66-year-old female presenting with syncope, melena, and anemia. Computed tomography (CT) showed soft tissue mass involving the superior wall of the duodenum and hypo-enhancing he

Thumb Injuries and Instabilities. Part 2: Spectrum of Lesions.

The motor function of the thumb and its alignment with regard to the hand make it particularly vulnerable to trauma. Pathology encountered in this joint is varied, and imaging techniques play a crucial role in the diagnosis and characterization of injury. Despite advances in imaging technology, acute thumb injuries remain a challenge for radiologists. Currently, standard radiography and ultrasonography are frequently used first-line imaging techniques. Computed tomography is most often indicated for complex fractures and dislocations. Magnetic resonance imaging may be used to optimally charact

Isolated single lobe hyperplasia of the thyroid gland, presenting as anterior mediastinal mass, detected on positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan.

We report a case who presented with facial swelling and breathlessness. Recent chest X-ray was suggestive of soft-tissue in the mediastinum. In view of the suspicion of mass being neoplastic, the patient was referred for positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scan. Whole-body fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET-CT scan revealed a mildly FDG-avid large lobulated soft-tissue mass in the anterior mediastinum, seen to arising from right lobe of the thyroid gland, extending into the right hemithorax. Histopathological examination of the mass was compatible with adenomatous hyperplasia o

Radiologic findings and percutaneous treatment of a rare giant soft tissue hydatid cyst.

The aim of this report is to present the radiologic findings and discuss the percutaneous treatment of an extremely rare giant soft tissue hydatid cyst located in the left thigh in a 44-year-old woman. Ultrasound showed a well circumscribed giant soft tissue cyst, and computed tomography revealed a well defined unilocular hypodense cystic mass originating from the adductor muscles and extending through the subcutaneous tissue without bony relations. On magnetic resonance imaging, the cystic mass was hypointense on T1 and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Percutaneous treatment was performed

Noninvasive imaging of the normal temporal bone. Comparison of sagittal surface coil magnetic imaging and high-resolution computed tomography.

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is a noninvasive technique for evaluating the middle ear for primary and recurrent cholesteatoma. However, a limitation of HRCT is that it cannot differentiate between cholesteatoma and granulation tissue. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive, nonradiologic technique that has been effective in demonstrating histochemical differences between various soft tissues. We present images from a normal living subject's temporal bone in the sagittal plane obtained with both HRCT and MRI. Anatomic correlates in the same cut planes are presented. The

The Use of POCUS to Identify Subgaleal Fluid Collections and Intracranial Infections.

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been useful in describing soft tissue infections, such as cellulitis and abscesses. There has been limited use of ultrasound to describe findings of intracranial infections, such as Pott's puffy tumor, in cases of forehead prominence and signs of infection. In this case series we present POCUS findings in 2 cases of intracranial infections and one case of soft tissue edema without intracranial involvement from a single pediatric tertiary care center. Ultrasound findings revealed subgaleal fluid collections with associated periosteal lifting of the frontal b

Musculoskeletal infection: role of CT in the emergency department.

Musculoskeletal infection is commonly encountered in the emergency department and can take many forms, depending on the involvement of the various soft-tissue layers, bones, and joints. Infection may manifest as superficial cellulitis, necrotizing or nonnecrotizing fasciitis, myositis, a soft-tissue abscess, osteomyelitis, or septic arthritis. Because clinical parameters for the detection of musculoskeletal infection generally lack sensitivity and specificity, computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in the assessment of potential musculoskeletal infections in the emergency department.

[Osteomyelitis--imaging methods and their value].

Various imaging modalities are used in diagnosis of acute and chronic infectious endogenous osteomyelitis and exogenous ostitis. The pathophysiological changes of osteomyelitis/ostitis in the bone and surrounding soft tissue are known. Findings in plain film radiography show these changes only in relatively advanced stages of disease. Hence, plain film radiographs are useful as a basic imaging modality by excluding other differentials and as a follow-up modality under therapy. Ultrasound-using advanced technology--offers diagnostic help in acute osteomyelitis, especially in infants. The variou
